FedEx sues US government, blames export rules after goofing up Huawei shipment

US-based company FedEx has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Commerce for enforcing prohibitions contained in the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The EAR governs whether a person may export an object from the US, re-export an object from a foreign country, and transfer an object from one place to another in a foreign country. In a public statement, FedEx mentioned that the regulation was creating an impossible burden for the company. The lawsuit also challenges the organisation to change the export rules, The Verge reported.

FedEx filed the lawsuit just a few days after mistakenly refusing to deliver a Huawei device into the US. When FedEx refused to deliver the Huawei device to the consignee in the US, it returned it to the sender in the UK with the following message on the package: “Parcel returned by FedEx, due to US government issue with Huawei and China government.” In its lawsuit, FedEx also mentioned that it believes that “the EAR violate common carriers’ rights to due process under the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution as they unreasonably hold common carriers strictly liable for shipments that may violate the EAR without requiring evidence that the carriers had knowledge of any violations.”

In the complaint filed by FedEx, it is also mentioned that FedEx believes that the EAR, as currently constructed and implemented, places an unreasonable burden on companies like FedEx. In an interview with Fox News, Fred Smith, the CEO of FedEx, said that export control was creating “confusing situations” for FedEx and that the Huawei shipping error was emblematic of an ongoing problem. The package being sent to the US was a Huawei P30 smartphone.

Last month, the US government added the Chinese tech giant Huawei to the list of entities. The US government banned Huawei in the country by saying that Huawei’s hardware puts the US at risk for espionage. After the whole controversy last week, Huawei sued the U.S. Department of Commerce by claiming that its telecommunications equipment was wrongfully seized.

Oppo showcases under-display camera tech with customised display at MWC Shanghai

So the speculation turned out to be true and Oppo has made a breakthrough by premiering the first ever phone with an under-display camera. At the ongoing MWC Shanghai, the Chinese tech company pulled the covers off of a phone that neither has a notch nor a pop-up camera mechanism for front shooters. In a press note on its website, Oppo said that it has been “continually pushing the boundaries for bezel-less phone designs” (Oppo Find X) and this is the latest iteration in the race to create a perfect solution for a bezel-less, notch-less design. The company has been teasing this technology since the start of this month.

On June 3, Oppo India tweeted a short video. In the video, the company showcased the under-screen camera as a functional feature. Oppo says that users will see a short animation highlighting the position of the front-facing camera during selfie mode that will help them locate the camera. “Otherwise, it's invisible while watching videos, playing games, reading emails, making video calls with friends and family,” the Chinese company claimed.

— OPPO India (@oppomobileindia) 26 June 2019

But how did Oppo make the technology work? The company incorporated a customised display. The part of the screen, under which the camera module is fitted, is made of a highly-transparent material with redesigned pixel structure to ensure that optimal amount of light enters through it. The camera used in the tech is also customised with a large aperture, a big sensor and pixel size to dodge light refraction (bending of light after it enters from one to another). Since the camera has a thick material above it, it was expected that the photos would come out blurry.

The algorithms behind our USC technology showcased at #MWC19 include haze removal, HDR and white balance resulting in a bezel-less phone, yet with a selfie camera that rivals current smartphones in the market today. #MoreThanTheSeen pic.twitter.com/yTpWgIMLmA

— OPPO (@oppo) 26 June 2019

To combat this problem, Oppo introduced three algorithms to enhance the camera performance. The first one is the White Balance in which the company made targeted adjustments and calibrated the colour against any light sources that might obstruct the image. The second one is the HDR algorithm that helps in reducing overexposed highlights and increases brightness in case of shadows or underexposed parts of an image. Finally, the Haze Removal algorithm increases the sharpness of the image.

Oppo says that it will deliver the “futuristic, notchless, unibody and highly-recognizable smartphone in the near future,” however, it did not delve out any information about the rest of the specs of the phone.

Apple iPhone XI cases show cut-outs for lightning port, square camera module

The square camera module is probably the most talked about addition to the iPhone XI but there’s another important piece of tech that everyone is looking up to, which is the refresh of the phone’s charging port. There are already a lot conflicting reports about Apple moving on from the regular Lightning Port of the iPhones to the USB-C ports found in the latest iPad Pro devices. According to the latest information coming from a UK-based retailer, it seems that Apple will continue to stick with the Lightning Port in the next iteration of iPhones.

The retailer has listed cases for the upcoming iPhones and they delve key information on the above-said topics. The website shows that the Olixar cases it is selling on the website are a perfect fit. For that, the retailer has uploaded a bunch of images which give a 360-degree view of the upcoming device. In one of the images, the bottom edge is seen sporting a familiar cutout for the Lightning Port. This could mean that the Cupertino-based giant is still not ready to take a leap to introduce USB-C handset.

Apple iPhone Tempered Glass For Camera

Further, the cases also confirm the square module that was leaked in the photos shared by Digit in January this year. Olixar even made a tempered glass protector for the camera. As per the image, it sits over the camera hump and features four holes – three for the cameras and one for the flash. This apparently strengthens Digit’s iPhone XI leak. In case of the rumoured XR models, there is a same square cutout in the case.

Apple iPhone XIR Case

Apple’s iPhone XI rumoured camera design have been in the news a lot. This could be due to two reasons: First, it has been dubbed ugly due to the design (which apparently attracted a lot of attention), and the second could be the company’s silence on it. Unlike Apple, Google has already made it official that the next Pixel phones will have an iPhone-like camera module. This has left tipsters with no fodder leaving them with no choice but to remain off record for some time.

Samsung Galaxy A90 to launch with Snapdragon 855, Tilt OIS

There have been several rumours about an A-Series flagship phone from Samsung. Likely to be called the Galaxy A90, the phone has been touted to sport a triple camera system. Adding to the rumours is the latest development, which claims that the phone will launch in two variants. Based on a tweet by known tipster Steve H.McFly (aka OnLeaks), the development mentions that the devices will bear SM-A905 and SM-A908 model numbers.

This also comes with two important details. First, the phone will not belong to the R-Series as mentioned before and will indeed be an A-Series handset. Second, this will be the first A-Series phone to come equipped with Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 855 chipset. This could make it a notable competitor in the affordable flagship segment that already has the OnePlus 7, Asus 6Z, Oppo Reno 10X Zoom and the upcoming Redmi K20 Pro.

In order to somehow make amends, I bring you the key specs of these devices - SM-A908: SD855, 6.7-inch screen with in-display FPS, 48+8+5 rear camera, 5G support. - SM-A905: SD855, 6.7-inch screen with in-display FPS, 48+12+5 rear camera with exclusive Tilt OIS tech! Cheers! pic.twitter.com/uqfFTnfoIQ

— Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks) 25 June 2019

According to OnLeaks, the SM-A905 will be a 4G version of the Galaxy A90 and will feature a 6.7-inch screen. The phone will also sport an in-display fingerprint sensor. As mentioned, the phone will a triple rear camera setup, and as per OnLeaks’ tweet, the module will have an 48MP sensor, 12MP camera and a 5MP sensor. The setup will reportedly be equipped with an exclusive feature called “Tilt OIS”, however, there are no details of what this tech does.

The SM-A908, on the other hand, will be a 5G handset. This means that the Snapdragon 855 processor will have Qualcomm’s 5G chip. The phone is said to feature that same display (with the in-display fingerprint scanner), but will have a slightly different camera configuration. It will reportedly have a 48MP sensor along with and 8MP one (instead of SM-A905’s 12MP sensor) and 5MP camera. Recently, a report claimed the Galaxy A90 5G could be Samsung’s most affordable flagship phone.
