Microsoft announces Windows 10 19H2 Insider Preview Build

With the Windows 10 May 2019 Update still rolling out to eligible PCs, Microsoft begins discussing the beta build for the next feature update. In other words, Microsoft has just announced the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18362.10000. Windows 10’s next feature update is codenamed 19H2, and by the looks of things, it will be a relatively small update. It will be focussed on bringing improvements and mild enhancements to features brought in the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (19H1).

For those of you interested in testing the new beta build, you can sign up to become a Windows 10 Insider here, and then visit the Windows Update section in Settings to ensure you’re on the Slow ring. “19H2 will be delivered to Insiders in the Slow ring via servicing as a Cumulative Update and not full build updates,” writes Microsoft in its blog post on the matter, which clarifies that 19H2 will be less focussed on new features.

In another blog post, John Cable, Director of Program Management for Windows Servicing and Delivery talks a little more about what the next Windows 10 feature update will have. He calls 19H2 a “scoped set of features for select performance improvements, enterprise features and quality enhancements.” According to him, Microsoft will employ a new delivery fashion for this update. It will use one that is “less disruptive” and faster in terms of rollout speed.

Microsoft only recently began rolling the Windows 10 May 2019 Update out to eligible Windows 10 PCs. The much-awaited update brings with it numerous new features and improvements, including new emoji, Windows Sandbox, RAW image support, a new light theme, improved font management, refreshed Reset PC UI, and improvements to the Windows Subsystem for Linux Command Line Tool. You can read more about the update here.

Sony HT-Z9F Dolby Atmos Soundbar With Built-in Chromecast Launched in India, Priced at Rs 59,990

Sony has launched a new soundbar in India. The device bears the model number HT-Z9F and is priced at Rs 59,990. For the price, you get the soundbar along with a subwoofer and remote control. The soundbar also supports rear surround speakers (sold separately) bearing the model number SA-Z9R priced at Rs 9,990. Those who pre-order the soundbar between July 1 and 8 will get the surround speakers at no extra cost. The soundbar supports audio formats like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X along with Sony’s own audio technologies including Vertical Surround Engine and S-Force Pro Front Surround Technology. Without the surround speakers, the soundbar has an output of 400W and with the surround speakers, it has an output of 500W.

Speaking of connectivity options, the soundbar supports USB, Bluetooth 4.2, HDMI (eARC), 2 HDMI in (pass through), along with optical-in. The soundbar also supports WiFi and works with Alexa and Google Assistant speakers. The speaker itself weighs 3.1kg whereas the subwoofer weighs 8.1kg. The surround speakers weigh 1kg each. The HT-Z9F can also connect online and stream music using built-in Chromecast.

Unlike the HT-ST5000 soundbar from Sony, which has upward firing speakers, the HT-Z9F uses Sony’s vertical surround engine to simulate a Dolby Atmos experience. How well this works is something we will comment on when we review the speaker. The remote control of the speaker has a 'Vertica S' button to simulate the Dolby Atmos experience from the speaker.

A good thing to note is that the speaker supports eARC, a new standard in audio technology. Do note that to make the most of eARC, your TV needs to support the same.

The Sony HT-Z9F and SA-Z9R will be available across all Sony Centers, major electronic stores, and e-commerce portals in India. If you are looking to pick up the speaker then know that by pre-booking HT-Z9F from July 1 until 8, 2019, the rear surround speaker SA-Z9R will be available at no additional cost. The soundbar can be booked through any of the sales channels - Sony brand shops, major electronic stores, and e-commerce websites.

Google is testing Instagram, Snapchat-like AR effects in Messages app: Report

Google has been working to improve the overall Messages experience, and as a part of this drive, it is testing AR stickers in the app. Folks at XDADevelopers were able to use these effects, which look a lot like the ones that we have already seen on social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat. It should be noted that these effects are only available in the Messages app. Users won’t be able to use them in the Camera app.

According to the publication, there are a total of five effects: plane, balloons, fireworks, confetti, and an angel. These AR effects are present in the camera viewfinder, so when a users taps to send an image, he/she can select the desired effect from the ‘Effect’ tab. Reportedly, these will be through MMS, SMS, or RCS. The publication also claims that the feature is able to recognise a user’s face and put stickers are in the frame with “great accuracy.” You can watch all the five effects in the video below.

The news comes after Google announced that it would replace the ageing SMS app with Rich Communication Services, popularly known as RCS. This wasn’t possible till now because Google had left it up to the telecom carriers to bring support for the service globally. But that didn't really work out, and the company has apparently decided to take over the RCS rollout instead of depending on carriers. RCS offers a multitude of features like high-quality attachments, read receipts, typing indicators and more.

At MWC 2019, Google announced that it would integrate its smart assistant into Messages. Once rolled out, users will be able to see the Assistant button when using the Messages app. If you tap on the button, you can ask it a question, and the answer will be populated in the text field. Initially, the feature will be limited to the English language. Google also clarified that the company would not read its users’ texts and the only information that’s sent to the company’s servers is the question you ask Google Assistant within the app.
