Google Photos on Android likely to get features like manual facetags, timestamp edits

Google Photos is powered by the company’s AI capabilities but there is always a scope of improvement. Probably, the same was on the mind of David Lieb, Product Lead at Google Photos, when he asked users about what features and performance improvements they would like to see in the app. He replied to numerous tweets confirming features like manual facetags and timestamp edits on Android.

Lieb said that the feature that lets users manually tag a face is on the roadmap. Currently, people can only remove tags if they are wrongly tagged. Further, people can't select photos to be added to a face if Photos hasn't picked them. If you don’t already know, Google groups photos on the basis of faces in the images and places among other categories. This lets users find images faster than scrolling down a huge lot of images in the library.

Hi Twitter! It's no-meetings week at @googlephotos and I've got a couple hours free. Tell me what you want to see next from Google Photos! New features, bug fixes, performance improvements, you name it. (No promises but very open minds!)

— David Lieb (@dflieb) July 2, 2019

Another feature that is making its way to Android is the search parameter for recently uploaded photos. On mobile, the photos show up according to the date on which they were taken, and not on the basis of the upload time in the library, and the maximum you can do is to set the view in reverse chronological order, that is, show oldest photos first and latest images at the bottom.

For example, if you add an old photo taken in 2014 to your current device, Google Photos will show it somewhere under the heap of images taken after 2014. This is where the search parameter comes into play. The benefit of this feature is that it lets users see and edit any photo that has been just uploaded in the library, even if it was taken years ago. The feature is already available on the web, and is expected to come on mobile soon.

The second among other features that will carry over from the web to mobile is the option to edit timestamps. Users can now edit the time when a photo was taken. For example, if you have clicked an image in on February 25, 2013, but Google Photos is reflecting the date as March 31 2002, you can correct the information. The feature has been live for three years on the web and is present on iOS, but not on Android.

Cyberpunk 2077 has three origin stories for players to choose from

CD Projekt Red, the developers behind the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 game, have said that players will have three origin stories to choose from and this will lead to three different prologues being made available to players. The three options are - Nomad, Corpo or Street Kid. Not only will the game have a different opening for the origin story of the character, but will also affect gameplay. For example, if you find yourself in the midst of Nomads and your origin story is that of a Street Kid, you will have certain dialogue options unavailable to you blocking certain paths of the story because of your origin. Not only does this add a level of realism to the game but also ensures a different experience for those that will play the game more than once. The character you play is named V and you can customise the gender and look of your character as well. There is also no morality system in the game which means that you aren't penalised for killing everyone, but we are sure it will have in-game consequences.

CyberPunk 2077's lead quest designer PaweÅ‚ Sasko told VG24/7, “The player in Cyberpunk 2077 can create a custom character that has one of three origin stories, that we call lifepaths: you can be Nomad, Corpo or Street Kid. Each of that Lifepaths has a different starting location and story background that are strongly connected with the origin story. Anything more I say can reveal too much from the story, so I will leave it like this.”

It has previously been revealed that players will be able to explore the Badlands that surround Night City, the city where the events of the game take place. The Badlands is also the place where the Nomads reside, so it will be interesting to see how an ‘outsiders’ enters and inhabits Night City. Similarly, Corp and Street Kid will have different points of origin in the city.

Another reason to be excited for Cyberpunk 2077 is that Keanu Reeves will don the role of Johnny Silverhand. This announcement came along with the release date reveal at the Microsoft E3 press conference. Keanu Reeves took the stage at the event himself to announce the release date of the game. The game will hit the PS4, Xbox One and the PC on 16 April 2020.

There was a 50 minute behind-closed-doors demo showcased to the media at E3 2019 and the gameplay demo will be made public at PAX West. PAX West kicks off on August 30 and will end on September 2, 2019. Expect to wake up one day and see the gameplay demo in your YouTube feed on any of these days as the exact date and time has not yet been announced.

To whet your appetite for the game, below is the E3 2019 trailer of the game and the nearly 50-minute gameplay demo which was shown behind closed doors at E3 2018. For those interested, there is an unboxing of the collector's edition of the game as well.

Microsoft, Amazon, HP, Dell and others considering moving some hardware production out of China

Microsoft, Amazon, HP, and Dell are the latest victims of the ongoing trade war between China and the US. According to Nikkei Asian Review, top personal computer manufacturers like HP and Dell are both considering a move of up to 30 percent of their laptop production out of China. Moreover, Microsoft and Amazon might move some Xbox, Kindle and Echo production out of the country. Acer and Asustek too, are exploring production options outside of China, claims the report.

To remind you, HP and Dell are two of the top three personal computer brands in the world. Although, they together sum up to a total of 40 percent of the global market, the brands are now considering allocating up to 30 percent of their laptop production out of China. They are looking at countries like Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines to build a new supply chain. Other PC makers such as Acer, Asustek, and Leovo are also planning to shift, according to the report. Companies like Samsung are already assembling devices in Vietnam, including the upcoming Galaxy Fold smartphone.

Other top companies like Microsoft, Nintendo, Google, Amazon, and Sony are also looking to move out of China to manufacture their gaming consoles and smart speakers elsewhere.

The potential move-out plans are in response to the ongoing trade war between the US and China. The Verge claims, “the US put a 25 percent tariff on $200 billion worth of goods. While the technology industry has largely remained unscathed, new tariffs could soon extend the fees to laptops, smartphones, and game consoles, adding significant costs that could result in higher prices for consumers and slimmer margins for manufacturers.”

To make you aware of the gravity of the situation, Chongqing in Southwest China, which once produced one in every three laptops in the world, is losing its shine with global manufacturers. As a result, “the country's economy will have to brace for a further slowdown and many factory workers need to look for jobs elsewhere" says Darson Chiu, a trade-specialised economist.

LineageOS returns with Night Mode, Call Recording, Quick Settings and more

In a manner of speaking, LineageOS is a late-2016-born successor to the popular custom ROM CyanogenMod. Since its inception, support for LineageOS has been gradually expanding to more and more devices. According to XDADevelopers, the LineageOS developers announced earlier this year that they would bring a version based on Android 9 Pie to 24 devices. And now, we see a new blog post from the developers that lists the changes made to the OS since March 1.

LineageOS 16.0 comes with a long list of changes. But some of the notable changes include an automatic switch to dark UI when night mode is turned on, an expandable volume panel, and the addition of a call recorder tool along with a GPS battery saving mode in Settings. The following tiles in the notification drawer get a detailed view: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, Location, Profiles. It's a feature that was removed from the stock version of Android some two years ago.

The changelog published by the developers also mentions two changes that should make long-standing CyanogenMod users happy. The first is the return of the circlular battery icon, an element that's unique to the OS' lineage (pun unintended). The second is the addition of a new default wallpaper along with a standalone wallpaper app. “It’s possible to add up to two LockScreen shortcuts again,” writes Jrizzoli of the LineageOS team.

LineageOS sprouted as a rebranded CyanogenMod in late 2016 when the developers at CyanogenMod Inc announced the closure of the project. LineageOS was officially launched on December 24, 2016. Since its launch, LineageOS has expanded to support over 185 smartphone models. The custom ROM currently has over 1.7 million active installs around the world. If you're interested in reading the complete changelog for version 16.0, here's the link. If you're interested in getting LineageOS on your smartphone, here's the link, but do bear in mind that flashing it in your device will almost certainly void the manufacturer's warranty.
