Hathway Lifelong Binge plan offers unlimited internet at 50Mbps for Rs 399 per month: Report

With the news of Jio nearing the commercial launch of its JioGigaFiber internet service, it seems like the competition is bolstering its services. Hathway has reportedly launched a new unlimited broadband plan called ‘Lifelong Binge’ for its users. Under the new offer, a user is said to get internet access at 50Mbps speeds for a monthly rent of Rs 399. There’s a one-time non-refundable registration fee of Rs 1,999 to gain eligibility for the new pack. Reported by Telecom Talk, the new offering by Hathway is not currently listed on the company’s website and the plan is said to be available only for the ISP’s users in Hyderabad.

Additionally, the new plan is said to come without any cap on data consumption and is apparently truly unlimited. This means that the users who opt for the offer can download and surf as much as they want, without being capped at lower speeds. The new offer by Hathway seems to be a revised version of its previously reported ‘Life Set Hai’ offer. The plan was announced back in May and it offered unlimited access to the internet at speeds of 50Mbps with prices starting at Rs 349. The plan was originally priced at Rs 449 but was made available with a discount of Rs 100.

Hathway also had a Play Box Android streaming device in October last year. It supports playback of up to Full HD 1080p videos and comes with a remote with dedicated buttons for popular services like YouTube, Netflix and Google Play. Priced at Rs 2,999, the box also supports Google Assistant and comes with a voice functionality on the remote - like the Amazon FireStick remote. The internet provider was previously reported of offering the box free of charge for users who subscribe to a 100 Mbps plan or above for a duration of two months or longer.

Google Chrome working to block heavy ads that slow down browser

Google has been working on several tools to keep the users in the driving seat when they use the Chrome browser. In a related development, 9to5google has reported that the company is working on a tool (or feature) that will block ‘heavy ads’, which use ‘an egregious amount of system resources,’ and tend to slow down the browser. A hint of this was found in a work-in-progress Chromium commit.

“This change introduces a feature that unloads ad iframes that have been detected to use an egregious amount of system resources. This reuses the quiet safebrowsing interstitial UX, which gets loaded into the ad iframe. This intervention unloads ads that are in the .1% of bandwidth usage, .1% of CPU usage per minute, and .1% of overall CPU time. The current numbers are 4MB network and 60 seconds CPU, but may be changed as more data is available,” the Chromium commit read.

Last year in February, Google introduced a built-in ad blocker in Chrome that stops showing ads, including those owned or served by Google. The ad-blocker does not block ads on all websites but only those that are deemed to be invasive, intrusive or just annoying. That said, Google will block all ads from a website where just one ad is non-compliant of its standards. Google already blocks ads that use Adobe Flash, which increase page loading times and drain device battery.

Recently, Google rolled out tools in Chrome for helping users take control of their data. Google says that it is improving cookie controls so that users can clear or block third-party cookies. This feature will be implemented such that first-party cookies aren’t affected, which means users won’t be logged out of banking sites if they have opted for such first-party trackers. The company had also announced a new incognito mode for Search and Maps. The feature can be toggled on or off and will enable users to have more control over when the Google service is collecting data.

Apple MacBook keyboards to use new scissor switch design, including MacBook Air 2019: Ming-Chi Kuo

Renowned Apple product analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is quite convinced that the Cupertino-based company is soon going make some changes for its upcoming MacBook models. The analyst says that the company will ditch its current butterfly switch design for a new version of its much older scissor switch design on the laptop's keyboard. The butterfly switch design, which was first introduced on the 12-inch MacBook in early 2015, quickly became the topic of much debate and criticism. It is presently used on all MacBook models that Apple sells.

The news of Kuo’s prediction comes in the form of a recently published news article by MacRumors in which the analyst was quoted as saying, “There have been successful developments in the new scissor keyboard. The new keyboard could improve the typing experience by offering longer key travel and durability by adopting glass fiber to reinforce the keys' structure.” Kuo believes the new version of Apple’s classic scissor switch design will make it to the 2019 refresh of the MacBook Air.

In early 2015, Apple switched (pun unintended) from its traditional scissor switch design to a new butterfly switch design. This was in hopes of improving stability and reducing thickness by using fewer and simpler moving parts within each switch. The first generation design was met with heavy criticism from customers and Apple fans because of reliability issues. Exposure to dust was one of the main reasons for the failing keys.

The butterfly switch is currently in its fourth generation design but it appears Apple may soon return to a more traditional approach with next year’s MacBook models. Recognising the problem at hand, Apple is currently offering a free keyboard replacement to users who own a MacBook that’s affected by the bad switch design problem. You can find the list of eligible models here. If you believe you own one of them and are having problems with the keyboard, you can have it replaced for free by visiting the nearest authorised Apple service centre.

Microsoft could still release a streaming-focused next-gen Xbox: Report

If the information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Microsoft hasn't pulled the plug on the upcoming streaming-focused Xbox. At E3 2019, Microsoft shed a little light on its upcoming next-generation console Scarlet, and the specs revealed are very similar to those of the PS5. You can check out our comparison of the two consoles here. Around the same time, it was also speculated that Microsoft had pulled the plug on the base variant of the upcoming console targeted at streaming.

In a new video published by Brad Sams, he says that the streaming box is "still being actively developed" by Microsoft. Evidently, Brad Sams has a good track record of revealing information about Microsoft's product developments. However we suggest you take the news with a hint of salt.

According to the source, the new box will make streaming a little bit better when compared to the experience on a smart TV or any other app. He said that the box would have a "marginal amount of compute" to help with gameplay elements like movement, etc. The bulk of the processing would be taken care of by the xCloud server.

It is also suggested that the Microsoft xCloud streaming device could be priced as low as $60, or about $80 with a controller. This device will be aimed to take on the launch Google Stadia bundle currently, which is priced at $130 for a Chromecast Ultra and a controller along with a three-month subscription. You can check out our FAQ about Google stadia here.

It isn’t clear when the streaming-focused Xbox console will be launched. Microsoft did say at E3 2019 that current Xbox One users could use their consoles as xCloud servers and that this feature would be available for free for console owners. The next generation console war is heating up and both Microsoft and Sony are expected to launch their next-gen consoles for the holiday season of 2020.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 could feature two Time of Flight sensors

Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 10 will go official on August 7. However, reports and rumours about the handset have started leaking out ahead of the official unveiling. The smartphone was previously revealed in a hands-on image, which suggested that there could be a Note 10+ this time. Now, a new report by PhoneArena suggests that it could come equipped with not just one but two Time of Flight (ToF) sensors. In addition, a separate timely report by etnews states that Kolen, a South Korean lens maker is planning to invest 22 million dollars in the construction of a new lens manufacturing plant.

Kolen’s current lens production capacity is said to be 13 million lenses and the new factory will reportedly increase it by another 12 million lenses per month. The reason why Kolen is said to be ramping up productions is because it is planning to supply the lens modules to Samsung Electronics. The new plant will apparently be set up in Vietnam, where more than half of Samsung’s phones are made. The lens manufacturer will reportedly be producing and supplying ToF modules for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 10 smartphone. “We are planning to produce lenses through our new plant in Vietnam according to Samsung Electronics’ plan to expand application of TOF lenses for its Smartphones.” a representative for KOLEN told etnews.

As for the dual ToF camera sensor on the Galaxy Note 10 series, it is speculated that there will be one sensor on the standard Galaxy Note 10. However, the rumoured Galaxy Note 10+ could come equipped with a ToF sensor on both front and back sides. However, it is not known how the company plans to incorporate the sensor in the punch-hole camera design. In addition, as per some current rumours, the regular Samsung Galaxy Note10 could feature a 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED display, while the bigger Plus model is said to come with a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel. You can read more about the phones here.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 to feature ECG and Fall Detection: Report

Leaked images of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 recently confirmed the development of Samsung’s next smartwatch. It seems like the successor of the Galaxy Watch Active will stick with the same old design language. However, according to SamMobile, the next Samsung wearable will take on the Apple Watch 2 with an ECG app. This app would allow users to take an electrocardiogram reading from the wrist. In simpler terms, it would allow users to capture their heart rhythm. The data in the Samsung app can be presented to physicians, similar to Apple’s Health app.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 will reportedly be able to push Afib (atrial fibrillation) notifications by checking the heart rhythm in the background. However, the feature first needs FDA approval, so it might not be available at the time of launch. The report further goes on to say that the watch will have “Fall Detection”. Again, it should work pretty much the same way as the Apple Watch 4: display an alert on the screen and nudge the user when it detects a hard fall. Users can either dismiss the notification alert or dial an emergency contact. If the watch gets a response from the user, well and good, if it doesn’t, it will automatically alert emergency services and inform pre-determined emergency contacts.

As per the rumours, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will be available in 40mm and 44mm sizes. And, since the design is similar to its predecessor, it would not feature a rotating bezel. Moreover, the upcoming smartwatch could feature a 340mAh battery, and a speaker grille on the right edge.

However, it is still unclear as yet when the next Samsung Galaxy Watch Active will be released. As per some rumours, it could be launched alongside the Galaxy Note 10 on August 7. There are no confirmations from Samsung about a new wearable at this point.
