Google Pixel 4 could sport 16-megapixel telephoto lens: Report

In yet another investigation-led speculation article about the upcoming Google Pixel 4, XDADevelopers writes that the default Google Camera app from the to-be-released Android Q Beta 5 reveals some interesting clues about the upcoming Pixel device's camera. An update in the source code of Google Camera 6.3 suggests that the Pixel 4's square camera setup on the back panel could include a telephoto lens, whose resolution could be 16 megapixels.

The team at XDADevelopers writes that it found some important changes in the “Sabre” section of the source code, which is an internal name for Super Res Zoom. A line that did not exist in the previous betas suddenly appears now, reading “SABRE_UNZOOMED_TELEPHOTO”. The team also found a list of sensor IDs in the source code, something that did not exist in the previous versions of the default camera app either. The list includes: “front IR” sensor, a “front regular” sensor, a “front wide” sensor, a “rear regular” sensor, and a “rear telephoto” sensor.

If what we gather from the source code hints is right, the upcoming Pixel device may come with not just a telephoto lens on the back but also an IR sensor on the front, which we can surmise is for face recognition. 9to5Google's report goes deeper into the source code of the camera app. A line in the source code that reads, “Telephoto image has dimensions ( ), but should have dimensions 4656×3496, 4656×3492 or 2328×1748,” suggests that the telephoto lens' resolution could in fact be 16 megapixels.

In June, when leaks and rumours about the upcoming Pixel device were threatening to pour out of every crevice on the internet—which is the case with most unreleased Pixel devices anyway—Google boldly tweeted an image of the Pixel 4's rear camera setup. The image revealed a square camera module with multiple sensors inside. “Wait 'til you see what it can do,” added Google in its tweet. Since then, we have seen quite a number of leaks and speculations about the upcoming device but this development here is quite significant because this will be the first time we see a Pixel device with a telephoto camera unit. Let's wait and see what happens.

Samsung announces Galaxy Tab A 80 with 2GB RAM, 5100mAh battery

Samsung, which only recently launched the Galaxy Tab S5e and Galaxy Tab A 10.1 in India, quietly announced the Galaxy Tab A 8.0. As the name suggests, the new tablet comes with an 8-inch WXGA display in a 16:10 aspect ratio. The Galaxy Tab A 8.0 also features a 5100mAh battery, dual speakers, 2GB RAM, and up to 32GB of internal storage. Samsung has yet to announce when the new tablet model will go on sale in India and for how much.

According to a press release shared by the popular Korean electronics manufacturer, the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 measures 8 millimetres in thickness and weighs 345g. In comparison, its larger sibling, the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 weighs 469g but measures the same in terms of thickness. The display on the Galaxy A 8.0 is a 16:10 8-inch TFT unit with a maximum resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Like its recently launched siblings, the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 features dual speakers for stereophonic sound.

The chipset doing duty on the new Galaxy Tab A 8.0 has not yet been specified. Samsung only mentions that it has a Quad-core processor clocking at 2.0GHz. If our guess is right, the tablet features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 429 chipset with a Cortex-A53 CPU. The GPU on it should be the Adreno 504. The Nokia 3.2 that we reviewed recently is powered by the same Snapdragon 429 chipset. That should give you an idea about the performance of the device.

Samsung is expected to sell the Galaxy A Tab 8.0 is Wi-Fi and LTE variants. The RAM onboard is expected to be 2GB. Internal storage is expected to be 32GB with the option of expanding storage to 512GB using a microSD card. The rear camera is a single 8-megapixel sensor and the front camera is a 2-megapixel unit. The tablet also gets Wi-Fi 2.4GHz/5GHz, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth 4.2. Samsung's proprietary version of Android 9 Pie is expected to be running on the device out of the box.

Xiaomis alleged Mi Mix 4 might have a better camera than Samsungs GW1 64MP sensor: Report

In May, a report claimed that Xiaomi is developing a Mi-brand smartphone that is likely to incorporate the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. Rumoured to be called as the Mi Mix 4, the phone is in the news again. Based on a brief conversation on Chinese social media platform Weibo, it is now being reported that the alleged Mi Mix 4 will sport a 64MP sensor and it will not be Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor.

While replying to fan on Weibo, Wang Teng Thomas, Xiaomi Product Director, claimed (via piunikaweb) that the rumoured Mi Mix 4 will have a camera that should be ‘better than’ the Samsung GW1 64MP sensor. It is the first and currently the only 64MP sensor which is commercially available in the market. Realme has already announced that it is working on a new phone with this camera module. The development related to Xiaomi’s phone indicates that the company could incorporate a new sensor possibly made by Sony.

According to previously available info, the rumoured Mi Mix 4 bears the codename 'Hercules'. Further, if Xiaomi sticks to its smartphone release schedule, then the phone in question could be called Mi Mix 3S. As mentioned, it is expected to come equipped with a Snapdragon 855 chipset. It could sport three cameras on the back and a single shooter on the front. The smartphone might feature an in-display fingerprint sensor and it is touted to support NFC. Citing a source code, Mishal Rehman, Editor-in-chief of XDA Developers, said that the phone could come with wireless charging support.

Xioami’s spin-off brand Redmi recently launched the K20 Pro in China with the Snapdragon 855 chipset, in-display fingerprint sensor, a triple camera display on the back and a pop-up front shooter. The phone will be unveiled in India on July 17.

Asus ROG Phone 2 launch expected on July 23 in China

Gaming phones seem to be the new trend smartphone manufacturers are picking up on. Almost every phone maker has one handset that is aimed at gamers in one way or another. Asus is one such company that already has a dedicated gaming handset called the Asus ROG Phone and it is now gearing up to launch its successor as well. While the existence of the upcoming Asus ROG Phone 2 has been confirmed by the company itself multiple times on Weibo, there was no concrete info on when the handset would be announced. However, Asus has now scheduled an event on July 23 in China, where it is expected to unveil some PC components and possibly, the ROG Phone 2.

While it is unclear that the ROG Phone 2 will debut at the event, it is surely a possibility since a previous report suggested the same. In addition, the smartphone was reportedly been spotted on the US FCC website, Wi-Fi Alliance, as well as 3C Certification websites, which again leads us to believe that the handset could be launched in the coming weeks. The 3C listing hinted at 30W fast charging support on ROG Phone 2, but since the first ROG Phone also supports the feature, it isn’t that big of a surprise. However, it remains to be seen what other new features or upgrades the handset gets.

The ROG Phone 2 is expected to launch running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, to compete with the likes of Black Shark 2 and Red Magic 3. It’s not confirmed whether there will also be a 5G variant of the handset using a Snapdragon X50 modem. Further, the handset is rumoured to come equipped with a 120Hz display, which, if true, would be a considerable upgrade from the 90Hz display on the first-gen of the handset. It could also feature upgraded RGB lighting, new cooling techniques, gaming accessories and more.
