Spotify Lite goes official in India, other emerging markets

Spotify Technology S.A. has launched Spotify Lite, a smaller version of the main Spotify app, for emerging markets like India, where the internet connectivity is patchy and phones have are low on storage. The Swedish media-services provider says that Spotify Lite allows users to control cache, and enables users to clear it with a single tap. Spotify Lite is now available in 36 markets across Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Africa on Google Play with more markets and features to follow. The same was in beta mode till now.

The company says that with Spotify Lite, users will be able to enjoy most of the features of the main app, including search artists, play songs, save them, share with others, discover new music, and listen to playlists specially curated for the users. “Spotify Lite was built from the ground up based on user feedback from around the world, allowing millions more to enjoy the world’s best music experience — especially in areas with limited bandwidth and phone storage,” says Kalle Persson, Senior Product Manager at Spotify, said in a statement.

Spotify Lite, which was available as a beta app until now, can be downloaded separately, both for Free and Spotify Premium users. It can either be used alongside or independently from the main Spotify app on all Android phones running version 4.3 or higher. Citing a company spokesperson, TechCrunch reported that there are no plans to bring the Lite app to iOS. It adds that not bringing the app to iOS “makes sense” because a larger chunk of the user base who would benefit from the watered down version would be Android owners.

Data Saving Feature On Spotify Lite

The company would benefit from markets like India, where there are a large number of people who are coming online for the first time. Obviously, first time users won’t spend too much on the premium iPhones, especially at a time when there are Android phones available at a price which suits there pockets. As mentioned, the lite version of the app will also help users save data.

“With Spotify Lite, you can easily control your data and storage. It’s only 10 MB, so it’s quick to install and load,” the company said. Spotify Lite also comes with a feature that lets users set a data limit and get a notification when a user reaches it. The app will compete with other music-streaming apps which include, YouTube Music, Apple Music, and homegrown players like Gaana, JioSaavn and Wynk.

Instagram releases new features to curb bullying

Instagram is taking serious steps to curb online bullying on the platform. The Facebook-owned social media platform, on Monday, announced features that will restrict bullies. With this feature in action, people will receive a warning when they are preparing to post abusive remarks. Adam Mosseri, Head of the Instagram, said in a statement, “It's our responsibility to create a safe environment on Instagram." He added, "This has been an important priority for us for some time, and we are continuing to invest in better understanding and tackling this problem."

The anti-bullying feature being rolled out takes the help of Artificial Intelligence to notify users before they post anything offensive. "This intervention gives people a chance to reflect and undo their comment and prevents the recipient from receiving the harmful comment notification," Mosseri said.

"From early tests of this feature, we have found that it encourages some people to undo their comment and share something less hurtful once they have had a chance to reflect."

Another new tool focused on limiting the spread of abusive comments on a user's feed helps users restrict abusive comments. "We've heard from young people in our community that they're reluctant to block, unfollow, or report their bully because it could escalate the situation, especially if they interact with their bully in real life," Mosseri commented.

Called “Restrict”, the feature is still in its testing phase and blocks posts from an offending person. "You can choose to make a restricted person's comments visible to others by approving their comments," Mosseri added.

"Restricted people won't be able to see when you're active on Instagram or when you've read their direct messages."

Cyberbullying on social networking platforms is an issue that needs to be given serious thought. By adding these new features to its platform, Instagram has taken a step forward in the right direction.

Heres how Hyderabad airports new Facial Recognition system will let you zoom past security checks

Have you ever been late for your flight and found yourself wishing you could just breeze past all the security checks without having to wait in long queues and show your ID, boarding pass at every checkpoint? That day is not far as the Indian government has launched a pilot project at the Hyderabad airport to make security check-ins faster and easier. Under the project, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad has introduced a new Facial Recognition (FR) system for passengers without them having to show an ID card at the security checks.

The trials, which started from July 1 and continued till July 3, were carried out under the government's Digi Yatra programme. On the first day, about 180 passengers enrolled voluntarily for the trials at the airport. The move is a step ahead in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India initiative as Digi Yatra would facilitate paperless travel and will let travellers avoid identity check at multiple points. In the first phase, the airport has set up dedicated FR Registration counters near the Domestic Departure Gates No 1 and 3.

Face Recognition trials for passengers are under full-swing at the @RGIAHyd. Here's what registered passengers have to say about experiencing the future! #RGIA #DigiYatra #FirstInIndia #FaceRecognition #FaceRecognitionAtRGIA #TravelSmart @HiHyderabad @ACIAPAC @MoCA_GoI pic.twitter.com/HZbC6k22Ne

— RGIA Hyderabad (@RGIAHyd) 4 July 2019

Those who have registered will be automatically processed based on the facial recognition system at checkpoints such as entry point check, entry in to Security Check and aircraft boarding. This will also facilitate self-bag drop and check-in, using facial recognition to identify a person. If you are interested in FR enrollment, you can visit any of the FR Registration Counters from 8 am to 8 pm at the airport with a valid government ID card and contact details to get your face captured by the camera.

A CISF personnel will physically check the applicant’s government ID proof and post successful verification, a unique DigiYatra/FR ID for the passenger will be generated. According to a PTI report, an exclusive e-gate is available at Departure Gate No. 3, where the enrolled passenger can get his or her boarding card scanned and face the FR Camera. The camera will then match and verify the credentials along with the itinerary details. Once the verification is done, the passenger gets checked-in and the e-gate opens. All this is done in a matter of a few seconds.

“Since, this is a trial phase, CISF personnel will still physically verify the travel docs and ID details of FR-registered passenger at the departure gate,” PTI quoted its sources as saying. Currently, the FR trials are being offered to passengers traveling only with hand baggage and to those who will take flights bound for the select cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Vizag and Vijaywada.
