Apple to launch four iPhones with significant spec upgrades in 2020: JP Morgan

In a bid to reignite growth and cover lost market share globally, Apple is expected to launch four iPhones with a significant spec bump in 2020, a report has said. According to a note from J.P. Morgan Chase, a US-based multinational investment bank and financial services company, there will be several new selling points, which include OLED displays, high-speed modems, and virtual reality features.

“Our positive volume outlook for 2020 is driven by our current expectation for the launch of four iPhone models ... and more significant spec upgrades. Our expectations include all three Sep-2020 iPhones (5.4-inch/6.1-inch/6.7-inch screen sizes) will adopt OLED displays and 5G baseband modems (with support for mmWave frequencies), and at least two of the three models adopting world facing 3D Sensing (Time of Flight) driving industry leading AR/VR capabilities which can be leveraged by custom built applications (including games),” CNBC quoted Samik Chatterjee, an analyst at J.P. Morgan, as saying.

Chatterjee also said that Apple would be going after “a much more ‘value’ category than it has been used to with its recent launches.” This suggests that the Cupertino-based company could launch a lower-cost iPhone in 2020 that’s the same size as the iPhone 8 but without a 5G modem or OLED display. Currently, Apple offers OLED displays on the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, and LCD panels on affordable smartphones, like iPhone XR, iPhone 8 and iPhone 7.

As far as 2019 iPhones are concerned, Chatterjee said Apple is expected to release three new devices in September, and it is likely that they will not include 5G modems or a major redesign. Further, J.P. Morgan predicts that Apple will sell 195 million iPhones in 2020, up from an estimated 180 million in 2019.

TikTok removes accounts of user who posted video of Jharkhand mob lynching

The online short video sharing platform TikTok has reportedly banned users of a group named  "Team 07" for circulating controversial videos of the Jharkhand lynching incident on the platform. The report comes soon after a complaint was filed with the Mumbai Police by Shiv Sena activist Ramesh Solanki, who lodged the complaint. There are apparently five members of the said group; Faisal Shaikh, Hasnain Khan, Faiz Baloch, Adnan Shaikh and Shadan Farooqui. They allegedly uploaded a video supporting the Muslim youth Tabrez Ansari, who was suspected of thievery and was badly beaten by a mob in Jharkhand. Tiktok says it has removed the video in question and suspended three user accounts.

"TikTok has zero tolerance for content that incites violence against other users or any content that violates its Community Guidelines. In line with this, the video in question, which has violated our Community Guidelines, is no longer available on TikTok. Such irresponsible acts will not be tolerated on our platform, hence we have suspended three user accounts and are cooperating with law enforcement agencies," TikTok said in an emailed statement.

The accounts of Hasnain Khan, Faisal Shaikh and Shadan Farooqui have been removed. TikTok seems to be on its toes to proactively handle such sensitive cases as it has been under the government’s radar ever since it was initially banned in India. However, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently alleged that the app owned by Chinese company ByteDance is illegally collecting data of Indian users and sending it to China.

Tharoor made the allegations while speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Zero Hour. The politician cited reports, which claimed that the Chinese government received data from TikTok through the wholly state-owned China Telecom. Calling it an issue of national security, Tharoor said that the data leakage is happening due to the absence of a robust comprehensive data protection framework. Meanwhile, TikTok refuted the allegations saying that the claims are simply untrue. In a statement, the company said that it “does not operate in the People's Republic of China and their government has no access to TikTok users' data, nor does it have any existing partnership with China Telecom.” In addition, the data of Indian TikTok users is said to be stored in the US and Singapore third-party data servers.

Huawei Mate X posters spotted in China store, could launch soon

Huawei launched the Mate X 5G-enabled foldable phone at MWC Barcelona earlier this year. It was previously thought that the device would hit the shelves by summer in select markets, however, the launch was postponed till September. Now it seems that the handset might launch before the stipulated time because a store in China has been spotted displaying a poster promoting the foldable phone. The images were shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo, and unfortunately, they do not delve out any information about the launch date.

The launch of the phone was postponed after Samsung’s foldable device, the Galaxy Fold, faced issues-related to the display. Several US-based reviewers reported that the panels of their phones malfunctioned. Following this fiasco, Vincent Peng, Senior Vice President, Huawei reportedly said that the company is doing extensive tests on the device and are looking to release the phone as soon as possible. Recently, a report claimed that Samsung has mitigated all the issues pertaining to the Galaxy Fold and that the phone could hit the market before the holiday gifting season.

Huawei Mate X Poster at Chinese Store

Coming back to the Huawei Mate X, it still remains to be seen what OS the company will use in the phone. Huawei is currently facing a softened ban in the US and Silicon Valley companies have been told to consider the Chinese tech giant as a part of the Entity List. This means if Google decides to continue supporting the ban on the company, the phone will not get Android OS and security updates.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X sports an outward folding design. In the folded state, the 5G-enabled phone looks like a regular device with a 6.6-inch OLED panel (2480 X 1148 pixel resolution). When unfolded, the phone turns into an 8-inch display with a resolution of 2480 X 2200 pixels. Under the hood, the company has paired its flagship Kirin 980 processor with the Balong 5000 5G modem to enable the 5G functionality.

When it comes to the camera, the phone is equipped with a 40MP primary sensor along with a 16MP ultra-wide lens and an 8MP telephoto lens. In the unfolded state, the Mate X is only 5.5mm thick, and when folded, the size swells up to 11mm thick. The phone packs a 4500mAh battery which supports Huawei’s new Super Charge with speeds up to 55Watts. As far as the price is concerned, the Huawei Mate X will be available for purchase for 2299 Euros (approx Rs 1.77 lakh) for the 8GB RAM and 512GB storage version. As of now, the phone only comes in Interstellar Blue colour.

Asus ROG Strix G, Zephyrus S, Zephyrus M, Strix Scar III and Hero III gaming laptops launched in India

Asus India has announced its biggest refresh in its Republic of Gamer’s brand, along with a few new products in the series. The company had unveiled these new products at Computex 2019 in Taipei, and just a month later, Asus is bringing most of that portfolio to gamers in India. Here are all the laptops Asus has launched today.

Asus ROG Strix G: G531 and G731

Perhaps the most notable launch from today is the new addition to the Strix family, the Strix G. Consisting of two models, a 15-inch G531 and a 17-inch G731, the Strix G series is aimed at entry level gamers and despite being an ROG property, comes in at a rather reasonable price-point.

Both the machines share the same specification set, with the only difference being their display panels. The machines will offer gamers a choice between the Intel Core i5-9300H and Intel Core i7-9750H processors. Both laptops will support up to 32GB DDR4 memory with a clock speed of 2666Mhz. Graphics in both the machines will be handled by the Nvidia GTX 1650.

The display on the G531 can be configured with refresh rates up to 120Hz, while the 17-inch variant has a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz. The Asus ROG G531 will retail at a starting price of Rs 59,990, while the G731 will retail at a starting price of Rs 79,990.

Asus ROG Zephyrus S: GX701 and GX531

The Zephyrus line-up from Asus has always been about packing as much performance as possible into thin machines. The larger GX701 is powered by an Intel Core i7-9750H processor, just like the GX531. The ROG GX701 comes with 16GB RAM, with support for up to 32GB RAM. There are dual NVMe slots on the motherboard, with one slot already populated with a 1TB NVMe drive. The GX531 comes with 8GB RAM soldered onto the board and a single DIMM slot, allowing you to max out the RAM at 24GB. The storage is aided by a single 1TB NsVMe drive. The Nvidia RTX 2080 Max-Q handles the graphics in the GX 701, while the RTX 2070 Max Q is powering the graphics on the GX531.

The GX531 will offer gamers a choice of panels with up to 240Hz refresh rates, 3ms response time and Pantone Validation. The GX701 has a larger 17-inch display with the same Pantone certification, but the higher refresh rates like 240Hz are upgradeable options, as is Nvidia’s Gsync.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 will retail at a price of Rs 2,99,990 while the smaller GC 531 will retail for Rs 2,39,990.

Asus ROG Zephyrus M GU502

The Zephyrus M is also powered by the same ninth generation Intel Core i7-9750H processor but uses an Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti GPU. The laptop comes with 16GB RAM, which is upgradeable to 32GB. The 15-inch display is Pantone certified and sports a refresh rate of up to 144hz and a keyboard with per-key RGB. You can pick up the ASUS ROG Zephyrus M GU502 starting at Rs 1,49,990. You can read out review of the machine here.

Asus ROG Strix Scar III and Hero III

Aimed purely at esports enthusiasts, the Scar and Hero are now in their third iteration. Both feature Intel's 9th Generation processors, but their USP happens to be the 240Hz refresh rate displays. The Scar III offers a choice between Intel Core i7 and Core i9 chips, each supporting up to 32GB RAM. The series can also be configured with either the Nvidia GTX 1660Ti, an RTX 2060 or an RTX 2070.  The Scar III will come with either per-key RGB or 4-zone lighting. It will start at a retail price of Rs 1,39,990 for the base variant and go up from there. The SKU with the 240Hz refresh rate will cost Rs 2,49,990.

Asus ROG G703GXR

A powerful laptop geared towards eSports players, the ROG G703GXR is equipped with a 9th Gen Intel Core i9 overclockable CPU. The laptop is designed as a desktop replacement laptop and besides featuring Intel’s top of the line chip, the Intel Core i9-9980HK also comes equipped with the Nvidia RTX 2080, which Asus says can be overclocked. The laptop supports up to 32GB RAM, and also comes with three m.2 slots utilizing PCIE4x lanes for super fast storage. There’s also a 2TB Firecuda SSHD included. The FHD display has a refresh rate of 144Hz, sports a 3ms response time and most of all, supports Nvidia’s GSync. Given the impressive hardware on the inside the G703 requires two 280W power brings to power it fully, making it a viable desktop replacement. The ROG G703GXR will retail at Rs 3,99,990.
