Qualcomm 215 entry-level SoC announced with support for tall displays, dual cameras and dual VoLTE

The most entry-level smartphones will now come with tall displays, dual cameras and full version of Android, thanks to Qualcomm’s new budget chipset. Called the Qualcomm 215, the new platform offers a lot of firsts for a chipset aimed for the cheapest smartphones. The Qualcomm 215 is meant to power phones priced below Rs 5,000, which has so far been the operating price range of Android Go phones.

The Qualcomm 215 features a new 64-bit CPU architecture and comes with a promise of a 50 percent boost in performance. There’s a quad-core CPU with four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.3GHz. Qualcomm, in a briefing with Digit.in, said there will be speed bumps in app launches and the overall experience. The chipset will also support 64-bit apps and operating systems including the full suite of Android as well as Android Go.

Along with a 64-bit architecture, the Qualcomm 215 brings the Adreno 308 GPU that Qualcomm promises will render graphics 28 percent faster as compared to the previous generation. This is also the first time a 2-series chipset will rock an Adreno GPU.

Furthermore, the Qualcomm 215 gets support for 19.5:9 aspect ratio display when will enable OEMs to fit taller displays, even with a notch. The maximum resolution supported is HD+. Then there’s support for a dual camera stack on the back of the phone. The Qualcomm 215 can support a single camera sensor of 13MP resolution while in dual camera mode, it can support an 8MP+8MP sensors.

This is also the first in the 2-series Qualcomm chipsets to support Dual SIM with Dual VoLTE and has an LTE Cat 4 modem inside. There’s WiFi 802.11.ac on board as well.

The Qualcomm 215 will debut in the second half of 2019. The SoC is aimed primarily for emerging markets like India where entry-level phones are popular and there’s a large chunk of the population still relying on feature phones. This could bode well for the entry-level segment where smartphones manufactured by local players as well as Chinese OEMs face performance issues because of low-grade hardware. This could also make the entry-level segment more attractive with taller displays and dual cameras.

Nokia 9 PureView priced at Rs 49,999 launched in India: Specs, offers, availability and all you need to know

In a surprising move, HMD Global has soft-launched its flagship Nokia 9 PureView smartphone in India. Without any launch event or pomp and show, the company has announced the price and availability of the handset in the country. The Nokia 9 PureView is one of Nokia’s most interesting handsets in a long time, thanks to five camera sensors on the back. The handset was under development for years. The five cameras on the phone’s back work simultaneously to capture 12.8 stops of dynamic range.

Nokia 9 PureView specs and features

The Nokia 9 PureView is the company’s flagship handset, albeit it is powered by a generation old Snapdragon 845 processor. In comparison, newer phones like the OnePlus 7 series, the Nubia Red Magic 3, BlackShark 2 and others feature the Snapdragon 855 SoC. The Nokia 9 PureView features a metal frame with a glass-sandwiched body and sports Nokia 8 Sirocco-like diamond-cut finish.

The phone’s p-OLED display measures 5.99-inches diagonally and it sports 2K resolution with 18:9 display ratio and is HDR10 certified. Rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, the phone’s display is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. There’s also an under-display fingerprint sensor and AI-based face unlock feature. The device comes in only one variant of 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It is backed by a 3320mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3, USB Power Delivery as well as 10W wireless charging. The phone runs on stock Android 9 Pie.

Coming to the USP of Nokia 9 PureView, the camera setup. The handset comes equipped with five cameras on the back, each of which has a 12MP resolution and are made by Sony. Three of the five camera modules feature monochrome sensors while the other two are RGB sensors. There’s also a Time of Flight or ToF depth sensor for additional depth information. Finally, there’s a dual-tone LED flash that complements the setup.

While there is no ultra-wide or telephoto lens on the Nokia 9 PureView, it employs all the five sensors at once to capture an image. The sensors have a fixed focal length of 28mm and are touted to deliver 12.4-stops of dynamic range, which should make for better capturing of details. The phone can record videos in 4K HDR at 30 FPS. You can read more about how the device uses its five cameras to capture detailed images here.

The handset generates a large amount of data while capturing an image and even features Adobe Lightroom while Google Photos to view DNG files. The company’s Pro Camera app also enables full manual control over the camera and the app detects when it is mounted on a tripod or when it’s hand-held. When in tripod mode, it can keep the shutter open for up to 10 seconds. On the front, the phone features a 20MP f/1.8 aperture camera that supports 4-in-1 pixel binning and outputs photos in 5MP with reduced noise.

Nokia 9 PureView price, availability and launch offers

The Nokia 9 PureView is priced at Rs 49,999 in India and it will go on sale in India at 12am on July 10 via Flipkart and the official Nokia online store. From July 17, the handset will be available across offline retailers as well.

For launch offers, the Nokia 705 Earbuds worth Rs 9,999 will be available for free as a limited period offer with the handset. The company is also offering a 10 percent cashback for users who buy the Nokia 9 PureView using HDFC Bank credit and debit cards, on both EMI and regular transactions done through Pinelabs terminals in offline store.

Consumers can also avail a 10 percent cashback when they use HDFC consumer durable loans but do note that this offer is available at retail outlets from date of launch till August 31, 2019. In addition, a gift card worth Rs 5,000 will be given to users who buy the phone via the Nokia online shop.

Deepfake DeepNude apps open source versions removed from GitHub

A week after media reported the presence of DeepNude app’s codes on Github, the Microsoft-owned software development hosting platform has said that it has removed all the repositories of the controversial app. DeepNude app was designed to create realistic nude images of women without their consent. The app used AI to remove clothes from images of women. The technology superimposes existing images (and videos) onto source images using machine learning techniques.

“We do not proactively monitor user-generated content, but we do actively investigate abuse reports. In this case, we disabled the project because we found it to be in violation of our acceptable use policy. We do not condone using GitHub for posting sexually obscene content and prohibit such conduct in our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines,” Motherboard quoted a GitHub spokesperson as saying.

In the “Sexually Obscene” section of Community Guidelines, GitHub notes, “Don’t post content that is pornographic. This does not mean that all nudity, or all code and content related to sexuality, is prohibited. We recognise that sexuality is a part of life and non-pornographic sexual content may be a part of your project, or may be presented for educational or artistic purposes. We do not allow obscene sexual content or content that may involve the exploitation or sexualisation of minors.”

Soon after the creators of DeepNude app pulled the plug on the app, multiple versions of the app popped up on platforms like GitHub, YouTube and Telegram. There's no word on how other platforms, apart from GitHub, plan to remove links that direct users to download copies of the DeepNude app.

The app was removed following a public backlash. The developers identified that the app was being misused and stopped offering downloads.

“We never thought it would be viral and (that) we would not be able to control the traffic. Despite the safety measures adopted (watermarks), if 500,000 people use it, the probability that people will misuse it is too high. We don't want to make money this way,” DeepNude creators said on Twitter.

While the same could be done using other photo editing software, DeepNude apparently made “passably realistic” images. Moreover, the photo editing softwares need expertise to produce such images, but with DeepNude, any person without any technical or artistic skill can produce such images. Unfortunately, DeepNude is just one use case of the DeepFake technology being misused. The technology is seen as a way to spread nonconsensual pornographic content and/or a means for revenge porn.

Apple refreshes MacBook line-up: MacBook Air gets True Tone, entry-level MacBook Pro now comes with Touch Bar

Apple has announced the launch of refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops. While the tech giant just refreshed its MacBook Pro laptops in May, the latest announcement comes in time for the back-to-school season. The new launches include two new 13-inch MacBook Pros and a refreshed variant of the 2018 MacBook Air. Apple has also discontinued the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro models and the 12 inch variant.

The update to the 2018 MacBook Air is a minor one. The laptop now supports True Tone with the device’s Retina display. Other specs include a 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 8th-generation processor and 8GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage in the base version.

The new MacBook Air price in India now starts from Rs 99,900. Additionally, students can get it at Rs 92,074. To recall, the older 2018 model was launched at a price tag of Rs 1,14,900.

The major update is to the entry-level MacBook Pro line, which now comes with Touch Bar, Touch ID, faster quad-core 8th gen Intel processors, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and Apple’s T2 security chip. You can buy it for Rs 1,19,000, while college students can get it for Rs 1,11,264.

Apart from the above mentioned discounts, the new laptops will be available with a pair of Beats Studio 3 Wireless headphones, as they are part of Apple’s back-to-school promotion. The promotion is applicable for college students, their parents, faculty, staff, and home-school teachers through the Apple Education Store.

The new Apple laptops will be available to buy via Apple Authorised Resellers from July 25 in India.

As for the discontinued laptops, Apple has officially discontinued the non-Retina MacBook Air which had an MRP of Rs 84,900 but used to often retail for under Rs 60,000. This means the MacBook Air line-up now starts at Rs 99,000. Additionally, the company has also discontinued the 12 inch MacBook Pro model.
