Apple to launch one notch-less iPhone in 2020, three in 2021: Report

Apart from the square camera module, there isn’t much revealed to talk about the 2019 iPhones’ features and design. On the contrary, the internet has already seen a lot of chatter about the design and features of the iPhones that are expected to launch in 2020. The latest developments come via two different sources in which the analysts have suggested how Apple is likely planning the transition from current notched design to the new era of notch-less displays.

The first report comes from well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that in 2020, Apple will launch one iPhone that will be equipped with a smaller front camera lens for an improved screen-to-bezel ratio. The second one comes from an analyst at investment firm Credit Suisse. The analyst believes that the Cupertino-based giant plans to release one iPhone model without a notch or Face ID in 2020, and will use an under-screen front camera and full-screen acoustic fingerprint authentication on it.

The analyst further believes that in 2021, Tim Cook-led company will launch three iPhones and none of them would feature a notch. The phones are said to sport under-screen front cameras and full-screen acoustic fingerprint authentication, which is likely a version of Touch ID that would work anywhere on the iPhone's display. Reportedly, Apple may develop its own under-screen fingerprinting technology rather than relying on a third-party supplier.

The news follows claims made by J.P. Morgan Chase, a US-based multinational investment bank and financial services company, which said that at least three of four 2020 iPhones will have several new selling points, which include OLED displays, high-speed modems, and virtual reality features. An analyst at J.P. Morgan said that the move could help Apple spark its growth spiral and cover lost market share globally.

“Our positive volume outlook for 2020 is driven by our current expectation for the launch of four iPhone models ... and more significant spec upgrades. Our expectations include all three Sep-2020 iPhones (5.4-inch/6.1-inch/6.7-inch screen sizes) will adopt OLED displays and 5G baseband modems (with support for mmWave frequencies), and at least two of the three models adopting world facing 3D Sensing (Time of Flight) driving industry leading AR/VR capabilities which can be leveraged by custom built applications (including games),” CNBC quoted Samik Chatterjee, an analyst at J.P. Morgan, as saying.
