Google employees reportedly listening in on all user conversations via Google Assistant, company responds

Google is reportedly listening-in on all your conversations, including ones which are not meant to be recorded. This happens via the company's AI-powered Google Assistant on phones and Google Home speakers, Belgian news portal VRT NWS claims. The news platform agrees that Google, in its terms and conditions, states everything said by users to their Google smart speakers and Google Assistant is being recorded and stored. However, it doesn't mention its employees can listen to excerpts from these recordings.

“It is true that Google does not eavesdrop directly, but VRT NWS discovered that it is listening in. Or rather: that it lets people listen in,” the news portal states. The report also adds that when people listened to their own recorded audio clips, they were surprised to find that their conversations being recorded and accessed by employees. In those recordings, “we could clearly hear addresses and other sensitive information,” which made it easier for the Belgian news portal to find affected users.

Meanwhile, Google has accepted that it listens to the conversations and has provided an in-depth explanation of what it does. “As part of our work to develop speech technology for more languages, we partner with language experts around the world who understand the nuances and accents of a specific language. These language experts review and transcribe a small set of queries to help us better understand those languages. This is a critical part of the process of building speech technology, and is necessary to creating products like the Google Assistant,” Google explains.

The Mountain View-based company says that Google Assistant sends back audio only after a device detects the user as saying 'Hey Google', or physically triggering the Google Assistant, to interact with it. When the assistant is summoned, the device is said to provide a clear indicator (flashing dots on top of a Google Home or an on-screen indicator in case of an Android device) that a conversation has started.

However, VRT NWS shortlisted a few conversations and said that out of “more than a thousand excerpts,” 153 conversations should never have been recorded because the user didn't say the ‘Ok Google’ command. For those unaware, users with Google Assistant on their phones and smart speakers have to speak “Ok, Google” to start a conversation with the AI-powered virtual assistant.

Since users didn't call up the virtual assistant, multiple sensitive user conversations were reportedly recorded unintentionally. As per the report, these include bedroom conversations, chats between parents and their children, along with phone calls containing a slew of sensitive private information. In addition, there is said to be a woman's recording who was apparently under definite distress. This fiasco raises questions about Google respecting its user's privacy.

Google clarifies that “rarely”, Google Assistant built devices may experience a “false accept.” It means that either some noise or words in the background was interpreted to be the hotword to invoke the assistant. Google says that it also has “a number of protections” in place to prevent false accepts.

“We apply a wide range of safeguards to protect user privacy throughout the entire review process. Language experts only review around 0.2 percent of all audio snippets. Audio snippets are not associated with user accounts as part of the review process, and reviewers are directed not to transcribe background conversations or other noises, and only to transcribe snippets that are directed to Google,” David Monsees, Product Manager, Search, said in a statement.

Not all is as bad as it looks though. Google reportedly tries to ensure that the voice excerpts are not being linked to a user account to make it difficult to track someone's identity. The company is said to delete the user name and replace it with an anonymous serial number. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to recover someone’s identity; you simply have to listen carefully to what is being said. If they don’t know how it is written, these employees have to look up every word, address, personal name or company name on Google or on Facebook. In that way, they often soon discover the identity of the person speaking,” the report by the news portal states.

As far as the conversations accessed by VRT NWS are concerned, Monsees says that one of the language reviewers has violated its data security policies by leaking confidential Dutch audio data. “Our Security and Privacy Response teams have been activated on this issue, are investigating, and we will take action. We are conducting a full review of our safeguards in this space to prevent misconduct like this from happening again,” the executive added. Google also reiterated that users can turn off storing audio data to their Google accounts completely, or choose to auto-delete data after every 3 or 18 months.

Sigma fp is the worlds smallest full-frame mirrorless camera

Sigma, typically known for its Art-series of lenses for multiple camera systems, has announced the world’s smallest full-frame mirrorless camera, the Sigma fp. The camera comes equipped with a 24-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and a new L-mount that’s come out of the Sigma-Leica-Panasonic alliance. For those wondering, the Sigma fp does NOT sport a Foveon sensor, yet.

Without a lens, the Sigma fp weighs 370 grams and measures 113x70x45mm in size. That is just slightly bigger than a regular point and shoot camera. The design of the fp is also rather simplistic, with a fixed 3.2-inch 2.1million dot display. There’s also the usual ports like an HDMI-out, flash-sync and USB 3.1 socket on the side.

In terms of what the camera can do, there’s a lot Sigma managed to pack into this little thing. The sensor has an ISO range of 100-25600, expandable up to 6-102400. The camera is capable of capturing 14-bit RAW DNG files, is capable of EyeAF and also supports HDR capture. What’s most impressive though, is the 18fps burst mode, although it is limited to 12 shots.

The Sigma fp will be accompanied by a multitude of accessories such as flash brackets, grips and even eye-piece extensions. Sigma has also said that they will be working with third parties on having a more robust eco-system for the Sigma fp.

In addition to announcing the fp, Sigma also announced three new lenses and teased a Foveon version of the fp. Currently, there is no word on the price of the camera, but the company did say that the camera will be available later this fall.

Googles new Shoelace social networking app aims to connect people over shared interests

After shutting down Google+ in April, tech giant Google is working on another social network named “Shoelace.” It is a hyperlocal network for people whose interests match and who want to find others to join them in activities like attending shows or going for sports. The social network is being developed by a small team in Google’s experimental Area 120 incubator.

It seems like we don’t have enough social networking sites with Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, and many more, do we? Nevertheless, Shoelace is aimed at growing your group of friends by matching you with people with the same interests and hobbies. It works by letting you create events or activities and invite friends and strangers to join you. Additionally, it will also notify users of the activities and events that one might be interested in.

Currently, Shoelace is operating on an invite-only basis and while Google is planning to bring Shoelace to cities nationwide, for now, they have decided to focus on New York City first. Google says, “This will help us determine what works and what doesn’t as we work to make the app available to more people.”

If you are wondering what’s up with the name “Shoelace”, Google has an answer for you - “The whole premise of Shoelace is to tie people together based on their interests -- like two laces on a shoe. We do so through activities -- which are fittingly called ‘Loops”, says Google in the FAQ section of the official Shoelace website.

The Shoelace app currently supports both Android (v8.0+) and iOS (v11.0) devices. You can download the app from Google Play if you are from the NYC area or browse the official website here.

Valves Steam Lab is companys test bed for experimental features

Steam labs is Valve’s experimental hub where the company plans to test new features. These features may launch, or may change considerably before launch or may not launch at all. Players don't need to sign up or participate in beta to get access to these features. They simply need to log in with their steam account. So, let's break down the three features that are a part of Steam labs.

Interactive Recommender: This is a new way of recommending games to players. It uses Machine learning to predict the games you'd like, based on your library. According to Steam, “This experiment looks at how much you've played each game in your Steam library and uses the magic of machine learning to recommend games you might like. Filter your results by picking games that are popular or niche, and drill down by release date and tags”. What this means is that if you play Doom, you will not only get other FPS games, but also games that you can filter based on genre, popularity, and other tags to help you find hidden gems you may like. This is a nice way to identify smaller titles, which one might have overlooked in the crowd of games.

Micro Trailers: As the name suggests, Micro trailers are short trailers to showcase the game. It is essentially a six-second trailer for every Steam game. According to Steam’s website, “Absorb every game in the Steam catalogue in just seconds. Micro Trailers are six-second looping videos designed to quickly inform viewers about titles on Steam with a presentation that's easy to skim. This experiment is a fancier version of the Twitter bot of the same name”. This should help developers quickly convey what they want to about a game without investing in a fancy trailer.

Automatic Show: Simply put, this feature is an automated, daily, half-hour show about Steam games. According to the official website, “What if Steam could magically generate a show about the latest and greatest games each day? The automated show is like one of those cable shopping channels without the super-absorbent chamois cloths”. This means that each day the player can get access to a host of games and check out information about them. This will once again aid with discoverability of new games as this show could help one discover games you may like but haven't heard off.

It is nice to see Steam experiment with features that are open to all interested and not hide behind a registration window. It isn't clear when or if these features will make it to the main site.
