Hongmeng OS is not Android replacement, will not be used on smartphones: Top Huawei executive

Huawei’s Hongmeng OS is not for smartphones and the company intends to continue to use Google's Android operating system for its smartphones, Catherine Chen, company board member and Senior Vice President, has confirmed. She added that the recently trademarked Hongmeng OS is for industrial use and it has been in development long before the discussions around finding an alternative to Android were reported by the media.

When US imposed restrictions on US-based companies banning them to do business with Huawei, Google announced that it would cut ties with the Chinese company. This left no choice for Huawei and it was forced to look for an alternative for the Google-provided Android OS for its smartphones. Following this, media reported that the Hongmeng system would be Android’s replacement and is faster than Android.

Chen, when asked about it at a media roundtable in Brussels, said that the Hongmeng OS was not designed for that. She highlighted that while an operating system for smartphones usually contains dozens of millions of lines of codes, Hongmeng contains much fewer - in the quantity of hundreds of thousands - and therefore very secure. “The Hongmeng system also has extreme low latency compared with a smartphone operating system,” Xinhua news agency cited the executive as saying.

Earlier this month, Ren Zhengfei, the Founder of Huawei, had said that the Hongmeng operating system would be more than just an Android replacement. It’s made to interconnect all devices. He noted that the OS works on just about everything including network switches, data centers, routers as well as smartphones. Hongmeng OS likely holds good potential for being the OS of choice for IoT devices like smart homes, autonomous vehicles and the likes.

Huawei has now registered the name “Harmony OS” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. The agency received the application on July 12 and it is currently under examination. The application reads, “Downloadable operating system programs; Recorded operating system programs; Mobile operating systems; Computer operating systems; Downloadable computer operating programs and computer operating systems.”

Google Chrome 76 will plug loophole that allowed sites to detect Incognito Mode

Chrome’s Incognito Mode is based on the principle that you should have the choice to browse the web privately. However, some platforms have found a way to detect browsing through this mode. Google has now announced that it will introduce a modification to the Incognito Mode in the Chrome 76 that will bar sites from detecting users who are browsing in Incognito Mode. These websites use FileSystem API loophole to detect whether a person is browsing in Incognito Mode and once detected, they provide users a different experience. Chrome 76 is scheduled to be released on July 30.

“People choose to browse the web privately to protect their privacy on shared or borrowed devices, or to exclude certain activities from their browsing histories. At the end of July, Chrome will remedy a loophole that has allowed sites to detect people who are browsing in Incognito Mode. This will affect some publishers who have used the loophole to deter metered paywall circumvention. Chrome will likewise work to remedy any other current or future means of Incognito Mode detection,” Barb Palser, Partner Development Manager, News and Web Partnerships, said in a blog post.

As mentioned, the change will affect sites that use the FileSystem API to intercept Incognito Mode sessions and require people to log in or switch to normal browsing mode on the assumption that these individuals are attempting to circumvent metered paywalls. For example, you are browsing a site that gives a certain number of free articles in a month. After you have crossed that limit, the website will ask you to subscribe. Users generally visit such sites through Incognito Mode to skip this limit. However, these sites have mechanisms in place that can detect your free article count, typically using cookies. With this modification, these sites won't be able to detect if a user is browsing in Incognito Mode.

“Sites that wish to deter meter circumvention have options such as reducing the number of free articles someone can view before logging in, requiring free registration to view any content, or hardening their paywalls. Other sites offer more generous meters as a way to develop affinity among potential subscribers, recognising some people will always look for workarounds.  We suggest publishers monitor the effect of the FileSystem API change before taking reactive measures,” the executive said.

In the beta version of Chrome 76, Google suggested a slew of user-facing changes related to Adobe Flash. Chrome 76 will reportedly block Flash by default in the browser. However, users still have the option to switch back to the current “Ask first” option for a few more releases. Google says that by not using Flash, users would be able to enjoy “faster, safer, and more battery-efficient browsing experience.” Adobe announced end of support for Flash in July 2017.

PUBG finally gets a story behind the chaos and its quite bleak

Most games in the market usually have a deep lore and story that drives the games. Take for instance the Metal Gear series, or Halo, or Half Life, which can fill up a small library with their lore. Then there are games with absolutely no story. Pac-Man eats dots, you just build things in Minecraft, and Counter Terrorists and Terrorists just want to kill each other. For a long time, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds aka PUBG fell into the latter category. You and 99 others are dropped on an island, you find equipment, and the last one to survive wins (and presumably gets a chicken dinner). With Season 4 of PUBG PC on the horizon, the developers have dropped a cinematic trailer that gives us some insight into the background for the game. Boy is it bleak…

The trailer starts off in 1965 and we are shown a young boy surviving the bombing of his home island, Erengel. He hid and managed to survive, but later realised that he was the lone survivor of the attack. “I was the first lone survivor of Erengel. But I would not be the last,” he says before adding, “The island showed a scared boy that he could be a survivor. That’s what I want from you.” The action then fast-forwards by many years where we see the boy (now a man) watching players battle it out in a match on multiple screens. He then says, “Welcome to my battlegrounds.”

The cinematic trailer was launched to promote Season 4 of PUBG PC. The update will be made available for players on July 24, while console players will get it later this summer. As part of the update, Erangel will have a revamped look with new buildings, terrain and graphics. You can learn more about the update here.

OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, 6, 6T get Android Q Developer Preview 3

OnePlus is one of the OEMs that’s giving an early peek into the upcoming Android Q for developers. The OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 6 and the OnePlus 6T are all part of the Developer Preview program and OnePlus released the third Developer Preview for the four devices. It’s for the first time that OnePlus has rolled out a single build for all four devices.

The update is available for download from OnePlus’ website and you need to manually flash your device with the ROM, keeping in mind the risks of doing so if it’s your fist time doing so. It’s also a pre-release software so there are multiple bugs and issues. You will also need to do a data wipe before installing the Developer Preview if you are installing for the first time. However, if you were already on a stable or open beta build, you won’t have to wipe your data. But then again, if you want to go back to a stable build, a data wipe will be necessary.

The Developer Preview 3 brings new features like system-wide dark mode, new gesture navigation, and more. But there are some known issues in the build. OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro users won’t be able to use the in-display fingerprint from the ambient display mode and will have to first press the power button to authenticate and unlock.

You can try out the beta build to test out the new features but keep in mind that this is still in beta and we have no word on when the final version will hit the devices, but going by Google’s track record, we will likely see Android Q debut on the Google Pixel 4 and then on on other devices in the next few months.

YouTube Music now enables seamless switching from audio to video

Google announced its YouTube Music and YouTube Music Premium audio streaming service back in March in India. The new music streaming service enables users to stream audio from thousands of albums and songs and one could also switch to watch the music video. However, there was a small toggle button on the top-right corner to make the switch and now, YouTube is updating this UI to show two big buttons instead. YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium subscribers will now be displayed Song and Video buttons for their currently playing music and this change is aimed at simplifying the process of changing from audio to video.

The feature also works in a way that there’s no interruption while switching from audio to video or vice versa. Additionally, if a user doesn’t want to watch video, they can head over to the app’s settings and turn off the music video option by toggling the ‘Don’t play music videos’ option. YouTube says it has “perfectly time-matched” about five million official music videos to their respective audio tracks, which means that one won’t miss a few seconds of the track while flipping between audio and video modes. The new option is now available from today on Android and iOS.

Speaking of YouTube Music, the service is competing with many other similar offerings like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Prime Music, Gaana, JioSaavn and others. To get ahead of the competition, YouTube introduced a new Student Plan in India, which is available for both YouTube and YouTube Music Premium. YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium is available for Rs 59 and Rs 79 per month respectively for students. Standard users need to pay a monthly fee of Rs 99 and Rs 129 to get premium access to YouTube Music and YouTube respectively.
