Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 gets price cut, starts at Rs 7,999

Though the Zenfone Max Pro M1 was succeeded by the Zenfone Max Pro M2 in December last year, Asus continues to sell the model that proved to be a huge success for it. In a tweet sent last evening, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer announced a permanent price cut for the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1. On Flipkart, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 now starts at Rs 7,999 and goes all the way up to Rs 11,999 depending on the configuration.

The base variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage now sells for Rs 7,999 instead of the previous Rs 8,499. The middle variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage now sells for Rs 8,999 instead of the previous Rs 10,499. The top-of-the-line variant with 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage now sells for Rs 11,999 instead of the previous Rs 12,499. It's quite obvious that the middle variant is the one with the deepest price cut.

Launched in India in May 2018, the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset with up to 6GB of RAM. The phone comes with expandable storage. The 18:9 display measures 5.99 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. The Zenfone Max Pro M1 employs an aluminium body and weighs 180g. Part of the reason for the phone's bulk is its 5000mAh non-removable  lithium-ion polymer battery. It also supports 10W fast charging.

The Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 comes with a dual camera setup on the back panel: a 13-megapixel primary sensor with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 5-megapixel depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.4. The selfie camera is an 8-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. It's combined with a soft LED flash. The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box but is upgradeable to Android 9 Pie. 207-foot asteroid whizzes past Earth

Our planet has seen quite a number of asteroids fly by at close range this year. Why, just last month, asteroid 2008 KV2 passed by at a distance of 6.7 million kilometres from Earth. Today, however, we're seeing yet another asteroid swing by at close range. This one is called 2019 NJ2 and it is expected to be approximately 207 feet (or 63 metres) in diameter. The asteroid was at its closest when it flew by on Friday evening at approximately 48,280 kilometres per hour at a distance of 5 million kilometres from Earth.

The news of the asteroid fly-by comes from a report by The Weather Channel, which reports that the asteroid was first observed on June 29 this year. 2019 NJ2 was reportedly last spotted around our planet's neighbourhood back in 1952 when it flew past Venus. Data from the Centre of Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) tells us that it will fly by Earth once again around July 7, 2119. However, the distance from Earth then could be significantly greater.

In technical terms, 2019 NJ2 is a Near-Earth Object (NEO) that's classified by NASA as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) even though the big rock is flying relatively far from us. But that's because any space rock larger than about 100 metres in size coming closer to Earth than 0.05 AU is considered a PHA. According to a tweet sent by space enthusiast SpaceByEli, there were approximately 1983 PHAs flying around as of yesterday.

Since 2019 NJ2 is already on its way away from our planet, there's no risk of collision or explosion. In late June, asteroid 2008 KV2 passed by at a distance of 6.7 million kilometres from Earth. It was estimated to be three times longer than a regular football field. 2008 KV2 is expected to swing by Earth again in 2021 and once more in 2022. Though considered potentially hazardous, most of these asteroids are predicted to fly by without any risk of collision with our planet for the next one hundred or so years.

Hyundai develops Active Shift Control to improve fuel efficiency in hybrids

Hyundai is keeping itself quite busy this time of the year, especially in India. Having launched the Kona EV in the country last week and the much-awaited Venue subcompact SUV a little before that, the Korean car maker is now announcing that it has developed a fuel-saving technology for future Hyundai hybrids. Dubbed Active Shift Control, the new transmission technology is claimed to reduce shift times in hybrids by 30 percent. The upcoming Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will be the first model to employ Hyundai's new tech.

According to a press release sent by Hyundai Motor Group, the new Active Shift Control technology optimises transmission efficiency by monitoring gear shifts 500 times per second, allowing for precise adjustment of the transmission rotation speed for quicker shifts. The new tech applies new control logic to the Hybrid Control Unit (HCU), which then commands the electric motor in the engine bay to align the rotational speed of the engine and transmission to reduce shift times from 500ms to 350ms.

How the new Hyundai tech works

Hyundai claims that apart from reducing shift times, the new technology also increases the durability of the transmission as it minimises friction during shifts. “The development of world’s first ASC technology is a remarkable innovation which incorporates precise motor control to automatic transmission,” commented KyoungJoon Chang, Vice President and Head of Powertrain Control System Group of Hyundai Motor Group in the press release.

Though the new Active Shift Control is expected to be introduced in the upcoming Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, it will eventually make its way to future Hyundai and Kia hybrid models. While Hyundai was recently busy with the launch of the Kona EV and Venue subcompact SUV, Kia—a new player in the Indian car market—was busy with the global announcement of the Seltos, yet another subcompact SUV. MG Motor, on the other hand, revealed the price of its Hector SUV in late June.
