Redmi and Samsung too will be announcing 64MP camera smartphones following Realme

Realme might race ahead to be the first OEM to introduce a 64MP camera on a smartphone, but Redmi and Samsung are not too far behind. As Realme announced it will be hosting a ‘camera innovation’ event on August 8 in New Delhi, a tipster on Twitter claimed Redmi and Samsung also plan to launch 64MP camera touting smartphones.

In fact, while Realme will simply showcase the quad-camera setup it is slated to implement in a smartphone that doesn’t have an official release date, tipster Ice Universe on Twitter wrote Redmi will be launching a smartphone with the camera to the masses. In addition, Samsung has also reportedly ‘restarted’ plans to launch an A-series smartphone with the 64MP camera.

While it’s unknown at this point who will race to be the first to launch an actual smartphone with the high-resolution sensor, but we will certainly have a lot many photos and videos to compare and see who does it better. As a result, if you plan on buying the 64MP Realme smartphone when it launches, you might as well wait it out for Redmi to come out with their version of it, and take a pick between the two. Samsung’s 64MP smartphone will reportedly come later this year, around September-October, right on time for the festive season.

The 64MP sensor is presently made by Samsung’s ISOCELL division. It’s larger than the current 1/2-inch 48MP sensor and measures at an impressive 1/1.72-inches. This also has the same pixel pitch as the 48MP ISOCELL GM1, at 0.8 microns and comes with some interesting new technology to make imaging even better on phones. The sensor size is, in fact, equal to the size of the 40MP sensor that Sony custom-designed for Huawei to be used on the Huawei P30 Pro. However, owing to the size of the sensor, OEMs will have to choose between offering OIS or reduce the camera bump that will inevitably grow thanks to the larger size.

Facebook really wants to remind you it owns Instagram and WhatsApp by changing their names

By now, most of you must be knowing that Instagram and WhatsApp are owned by Facebook, but just in case you don’t, Facebook will make sure you know who is in charge. After owning the two popular social media ‘rivals’ for more than half a decade, Facebook will update the names of the apps to reflect the ownership more clearly. Instagram will be named ‘Instagram from Facebook’ and  WhatsApp will now be called ‘WhatsApp from Facebook’. Next time there is something wrong with the apps, you know whom to blame.

The name-change was first reported by The Information, after which Facebook also confirmed the same to various publications. Fortunately, the apps will still be called WhatsApp and Instagram on your home screen, but on the app stores, the names will be followed by the “from Facebook” phrase. It’s part of a larger overhaul in naming properties owned by Facebook. The company’s Workplace app also received the same treatment and so did Oculus which is now ‘Oculus from Facebook’.

“We want to be clearer about the products and services that are a part of Facebook,” a Facebook spokesperson told The Information. This could be the build-up to the connected and encrypted vision of Mark Zuckerberg to bring all messaging apps under the same umbrella for users. Essentially, instant messaging from Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp could one day be accessed from the same place.

The sudden rush to claim ownership from Facebook is surprising considering the bevy of charges against the company for violating user privacy. It can be argued that being separated from the social network app has done a lot of good to Instagram and WhatsApp, the former now one of the most used social media apps and the latter the largest instant messaging app. Both of them enjoy a lot more trust from users, even though, neither is devoid of pressing issues that needs to be addressed.

The change also comes at a time when the FTC, the US’ trade supervision body decided to open an investigation into Facebook’s acquisitions over the years to see whether the company  made the acquisition with the goal of eliminating competition. Funny how Facebook is now rushing to paint it’s name on everything it owns right when it came under scrutiny for being anti-competitive.

Apples AirDrop can leak your phone number: Report

It is a well-known fact that Apple has an ecosystem that makes it easy for people to share Wi-Fi passwords, and use AirDrop to send files to the nearby Apple devices. However, the same features pose a threat to your privacy and security. According to a report published recently, cybercriminals can capitalise on the loopholes of these features to collect potentially sensitive data, including the phone numbers.

According to the report, if you leave the bluetooth on your device turned on, it broadcasts a host of device details, including the device’s name, whether it's in use, whether the Wi-Fi is turned on, the OS version it’s running, and information about the battery. What’s further concerning is the revelation that when iPhone owners use AirDrop or Wi-Fi password sharing features, their devices broadcast a partial cryptographic hash that can easily be converted into an iPhone’s complete phone number.

The information disclosed in areas like work and offices may not be as alarming as it may get when it is shared in public places. Such areas may have cybercriminals with some kind of hardware with which they can collect the details of all Apple devices that have bluetooth turned-on. The details could later be used to track customers.

How does this work?

If, for example, you are using AirDrop to share a file or image, the device that you are working on will broadcast a partial SHA256 hash of their phone number, the user’s email address, and the user’s Apple ID. While only the first three bytes of the hash are broadcast, researchers from security firm Hexway claim that these bytes provide enough information to the criminals to recover the full phone number.

Samsung teases Exynos 9825 launching on August 7, expected to power the Galaxy Note 10

Historically, the Samsung Galaxy S family of devices and the Note series launched in the same year are powered by the same chipset. It looks like 2019 is the year where this changes. The Galaxy S10 series of smartphones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip and Exynos 9820 chipset. It looks like the Note 10 and Note 10 Pro will be powered by the Exynos 9825 chipset which is expected to cater to the drawbacks of the 9820. Samsung’s Exynos official twitter handle has released a teaser hinting at the new processor. The 11-second teaser doesn't reveal any concrete information about the chipset. The teaser throws words like "evolved", "next-level" and "intelligent processor".

Samsung is expected to launch two models, the regular Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10 Pro. The major difference between the phones is possibly the size of the display. A report claimed that the regular Note 10 will have a 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED display, while the Pro variant will sport a 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel. The Note 10 series is expected to come in Black, White and Silver colours along with a red and pink version. Unfortunately, no lavender purple colour has been leaked so far.

Moving to the optics, it is expected that the Galaxy Note 10 Plus will reportedly come with a quad-camera setup while the smaller variant will have a triple camera setup. Leaked renders show the cameras are vertically aligned instead of the horizontal set up in the previous Note series. Based on leaks, the Galaxy Note 10’s camera stack will come with a 12MP primary camera with a dual aperture that can go till f/1.5 along with a 12MP telephoto lens and a 16MP ultra-wide camera.
