Alleged Google Pixel 4 images leaked on Telegram

Google might have confirmed key details of the Pixel 4 lineup, but the leaks keep on coming. Earlier this month, an alleged Pixel 4 was spotted in the UK, which did not offer a clear look at the phone, but if you have an eye for detail, you could spot the front camera and the earpiece on the black strip on the forehead, and narrow side bezels and a thin chin. However, two new images of the Pixel 4 have reportedly leaked, and they offer a crisp look at the device in a live scenario.

The two images were found floating around on Telegram, and are now making the rounds all over the web. However, it is unclear what the source of the photos might be. XDA’s Mishaal Rahmaan says, “The images were posted to a (very) small channel and were also posted on a private group. The person who posted it on the private group denies any knowledge of the source, while the owner of the small channel has yet to get back to me.” It is speculated that it is a prototype of the Pixel 4 that we are looking at in the images.

It is unclear whether it is Pixel 4 or Pixel 4 XL in the image. The Google Pixel 4 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch Full HD+ OLED display, whereas the Pixel 4 XL could sport a bigger, 6.3-inch Quad HD+ OLED display. According to the previous leaks, both the smartphones could come with 90Hz displays, which Google is reportedly planning to call “Smooth Display".

The leaked images also reveals the new camera setup on the upcoming smartphones. It is said that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL may sport a dual rear camera setup: a 12MP shooter with phase-detect auto-focus along with a 16MP telephoto lens. Previously, it has been reported that Google might be developing a DSLR-like attachment for the Pixel that may become an available accessory.

More details are expected to be released in the coming days as the new Pixels are tipped to be released in October.

Microsoft announces an event on October 2, new Surface devices expected

Microsoft has sent out press invites for their next event, which is scheduled for October 2 in New York City. Interestingly, Microsoft released the 2018 Surface devices on the same day last year. Hence, we are expecting to see the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7, and Surface Book 3 on October 2, 2019.

The tech giant is also rumoured to announce a dual-screen Surface device, codenamed Centaurus. The device has been reportedly in development for two years now. Other rumoured hardware announcements include Surface earbuds, and new keyboards with a dedicated Office button taking the place of the right-hand Windows key. We might also hear something about the next Windows 10 update at the event.

The new Surface devices are on the production line, and these updates are most likely to be minor refreshes to the current Surface product line.

Starting with the Surface Laptop 3, it could launch with a spec bump and include a USB-C port this time around. Rumour also has it that Microsoft may launch an AMD variant of the Surface Laptop 3. Additionally, USB-C can outright replace the Surface Connect port.

The Surface Pro lineup has been one of the best available 2-in-1s in the market for sometime now, and Microsoft would like to maintain that. While not much is known about the Surface Pro 7 right now, there is a possibility of an LTE variant that's powered by a Snapdragon 8cx processor. The ARM LTE variant will be offered alongside the Intel 10th-generation options. Also, USB-C could make its way to the Pro lineup. However, Thunderbolt 3 will not be present.

Coming to the Surface Book 3, just like the Laptop and Pro lineup, it is not expected to have any design changes. After all, why fix what’s not broken. The new Surface Book is tipped to have internal specification updates to 10th-generation processors.

The Microsoft Surface Go is over a year old now, and an update is due for the budget Surface device as well. While we have not heard anything about a new Surface Go from the rumour mill, the 2nd generation Go is speculated to have smaller bezels, and ARM processors. However, it is unlikely to show up in the upcoming event.

Microsoft Centaurus, a dual screen foldable tablet/laptop can be skipped. This is because it is reported to run Windows Lite, which appears to not be ready for prime time yet. However, we are expecting Microsoft to briefly tease the device.

Windows Central says, “Microsoft showcased this device to multiple employees at an internal all-hands meeting earlier this year, which is very unusual for the company. The Surface team is notorious for keeping projects secret, even from others within Microsoft. Centaurus being shown off on stage internally to employees makes me think Microsoft wants this device to be announced sooner rather than later.”

On the accessories front, as mentioned earlier, Microsoft could announce new keyboards with a dedicated Office button taking the place of the right-hand Windows key. A new pair of Surface earbuds, codenamed Morrison might be announced as well.

Moreover, rumours suggest that Microsoft is planning to announce “Teams For Life,” a new version of Microsoft Teams for consumers.

Google removes CamScanner from Play Store after Trojan Dropper malware scare

There’s a good chance that you know about the CamScanner app, which is available on both Android and iOS. The ‘Phone PDF Creator’ or ‘Scanner to Scan PDFs’ app had over 100 million downloads, before being booted from the Google Play Store. Researchers at Kaspersky Labs found a malware in the recent versions of the popular OCR (optical character recognition) app. It was apparently harbouring an advertising library containing a malicious module that the Kaspersky researchers identified as ‘Trojan-Dropper.AndroidOS.Necro.n.’  As per the report, this particular malware module was previously spotted in a few apps that came preinstalled on some Chinese smartphones.

The malware module was spotted only on the Android version of the app and it seems like its iOS version is still available on the App Store, probably because of Apple’s strict app vetting policies. As the Kaspersky blog notes, CamScanner was a pretty good app that offered notable functionality. While it displayed ads for generating revenue, there were options for in-app purchases and buying a License separately for eliminating ads. However, the Trojan Dropper module found within the app is said to extract and run another malicious module from an encrypted file included in the app’s resources.

“This “dropped” malware, in turn, is a Trojan Downloader that downloads more malicious modules depending on what its creators are up to at the moment. For example, an app with this malicious code may show intrusive ads and sign users up for paid subscriptions,” the Kaspersky blog states. We checked to find that the CamScanner app has been removed from the Google Play Store. However, Kaspersky reports that the app’s developers removed the malicious code with the latest update. However, since the apps’ version varies for different devices, it is recommended that one uninstalls it as their device might have an older version of that app that contains the Trojan Dropper malware module.

This is not the first time an app has slipped past through the Google Play Store’s app vetting process. While it can also be difficult to keep up with thousands of apps and their updates that are being released on the platform, Google needs to step up its game if it wants to assure users that the Play Store is the safest place to download Android apps from.
