OnePlus TV India launch set for September: All you need to know

A OnePlus TV is in the works and the company has already confirmed that it will be launched in September and that India will be the first country where it will be made available. The upcoming device will be sold via Amazon in the country, which doesn’t come as a surprise since OnePlus has been selling its products through Amazon ever since it entered India. Now, the company’s founder and CEO, Pete Lau, has shared some images of the first OnePlus TV that came off fresh from the production line. As you can see in the tweet below, the images showcase Lau packing the TV in its box and the second image gives us a glimpse at the TV’s panel.

First glimpse of the OnePlus TV

Last week, our first #OnePlusTV came off the production line - a truly monumental moment. Within this box you'll find over 2 years of dreams, milestones and of course an amazing TV. Proud to seal the very first box, and can't wait for you to see it! pic.twitter.com/hFuChx6bJW

— Pete Lau (@PeteLau) August 27, 2019

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus TV would feature a 55-inch QLED display. However, the second image from Lau’s tweet seems to let on more than what meets the eye. Some of our readers might have noticed the assembly line lights are being diffused by the TV’s panel, which hints at a matte display. This could be a notable feature of the TV since it will make it easier to view content on the device even in a fairly lit room. However, we are unsure of how the company will deal with the reduced vibrancy and contrast since matte displays suffer from this issue.

OnePlus TV expected specifications and features

There have been multiple reports and rumours about the upcoming OnePlus TV. A previous report suggested that the device would be announced in four different sizes: 43-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch size variants. As mentioned previously, the 55-inch model will sport a QLED display panel. There’s also a rumour that one of the OnePlus TV models could come equipped with a 4K HDR panel on at least one of its variants. Previously, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said that the company will "develop its own image processing chipsets” so that their TVs quality ‘sets the benchmark’ at Sony's image quality.

oneplus tv prakhar khanna

OnePlus wrote a detailed post when it officially acknowledged the OnePlus TV and it also mentioned "image quality and audio experience." While there’s not much to go on here, there’s a chance that the upcoming TV by the company could feature some of the latest standards like HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. While OnePlus’ upcoming TV is expected to be a smart device with the company’s own custom UI, Google has reportedly certified a new OnePlus device named “Dosa.” Google has reportedly certified a device called "Oneplus_Dosa_IN" that is expected to run an improved UI on top of Android TV.

Voice control, Bluetooth remote and camera

There’s also a possibility that the OnePlus TV might come with voice control and interaction, which means it could be equipped with far-field microphones. Some of the Chinese TV makers are now equipping their offerings with a camera and the OnePlus TV is also expected to come with it. However, Lau previously expressed privacy concerns over integrating a camera on the device’s TV. We also previously came across a report that claimed OnePlus has certified a Bluetooth Remote. While there was no image, the OnePlus Remote is said to work on Bluetooth 4.2. The Bluetooth enabled OnePlus TV remote control could feature a dedicated button for accessing an AI assistant like the Google Assistant. Moreover, OnePlus TV could also act as a smart hub for other appliances, apart from being capable of regular smart TV features.

OnePlus TV expected price

OnePlus is rumoured to be targeting the premium TV segment and has referred to the device as a flagship killer. It’s likely that the device might compete with the likes of Samsung and Sony. Lau said, “Because of the strategic partnership with Amazon, our price may be slightly cheaper than their [Sony and Samsung] products, but it won't be half the price.” This means we can’t be sure of the OnePlus TV being announced starting at a price similar to the Mi TVs, which is around Rs 12,000.

OnePlus TV launch date and availability

The OnePlus TV has been confirmed to launch in India this September. While there’s no official date yet, it is expected to launch on September 26. On its official forum, the company announced, “And now, I have a very exciting announcement to share with you – the OnePlus TV is set to launch in September, and it will be available in India first.”

The post goes on to say, “Over the past 6 years, we have achieved great success in India in large part because of our passionate and supportive community. Even after all these years, we’re excited to explore exciting new opportunities hand-in-hand with you. The OnePlus TV is such an important product for all of us, and we can’t wait to see it in living rooms all over India.” As mentioned earlier, OnePlus TV will be made available through Amazon.in.

OnePlus 7, 7 Pro could receive Android 10 on September 7 along with Google Pixel 4

Until now, Google’s own Pixel smartphones have been the only devices to recieve every new release of Android first, right after the announcement. With the upcoming Android 10 update, however, that could change. We say that because, according to a screenshot shared on Reddit yesterday, OnePlus is preparing to roll out the Android 10 update to some of its devices on the very day Google announces its OS. Google is expected to announce Android 10 on September 3.

The screenshot shared by Redditor Staafnek (Nick) shows a chat conversation with an unnamed OnePlus support agent. According to the support agent, OnePlus is planning to roll out its Android 10 update on the same date Google officially announces Android 10 for the first time, which is on September 3. It’s important to bear in mind that, since the screenshot shared contains no names or official details, there’s a chance the image is doctored.

When we at Digit reached out to OnePlus India to get more information on the matter, the Chinese smartphone company declined to comment. That leaves us with more questions than answers. Which OnePlus devices will receive Android 10 first? What about the launch of the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro? OnePlus is expected to launch the two ‘T’ phones on October 15. They were recently spotted in the wild running the beta version of Android 10 (previously Android Q).

If the image shared by the Redditor is to be believed, then OnePlus will most likely roll out its OxygenOS update based on Android 10 to its latest devices: the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. Models launched before them will probably get the update in the coming months. The OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro are expected to be launched on October 15 but it could happen sooner than that. You can read more about that here.

Reliance Jio smart hybrid set top box leaked, new hands-on images appear

Reliance Jio announced a new set top box (STB) at the Annual General Meeting, which is always full of consumer-focused announcements. The smart hybrid set top box is more than just a broadcast receiver. It will let you play and stream games, call any operator or device, including video conferencing and watch the latest movies on the day of release. And, the first images of the device have leaked.

The images shared by DreamDTH showcase the Reliance Jio hybrid STB. It has company’s branding on it and sports a blue colour. The STB can be seen carrying a number of connectivity ports like an entry port for the coaxial cable of the MSO, an Ethernet RJ45 port, one USB 2.0, an HDMI port, and one USB-3 port. At present, the software information is still unavailable. However, the Reliance Jio smart STB is tipped to run Android OS with custom UI.

Reliance Jio has plans to reach 15 million households and 20 million establishments in the next 12 months across the country with Jio’s home broadband service. The STB will also be offered to local cable operators. It will offer the largest bouquet of channels to customers, according to Ambani, in ultra high definition and double up as a smart home hub.

Reliance Jio now has majority stakes in Hathway, GTPL and Den which are major Multi System Operators (MSOs). As explained by DreamDTH, this is because “earlier Jio had plans of launching Tv services as IPTv riding on its own fiber internet service through the Jio Tv app installed in its Android based STB. Later Jio faced severe resistance from local cable operators (LCOs) who would lose their livelihood as people would disconnect cable connections and move to Jio's IPTv service. LCOs could indulge in fiber cutting and damage Jio's infrastructure in order to safeguard their business.”

Reliance Jio smart hybrid set top box will be able to host video conferencing to just about any device with a Jio connection. The company showcased a live demo of the service where a set-top box was able to make a call to a phone right from the conference. Moreover, the smart hybrid STB will support “console-grade” gaming. Jio says it has an in-built graphics card. A live demo was showcased at the AGM where Akash Ambani played a game of FIFA to show off the console’s set-top box’s graphical chops. It had zero latency. However, it is still unclear what gaming platform it supports.

To further the STB’s gaming capabilities, Jio announced a few key partnerships with companies like Gameloft, Tencent and more, indicating that the set top box is going to be playing Android games. You can read more about how Reliance New gaming console is a set top box here.

Ambani said that JioFiber customers who opt for the company’s annual plans, which is called Jio-Forever plans, will get an HD or a 4K LED television and a 4K set-top-box free. However, exact details of the Jio Fiber plans will be revealed on September 5.

Huawei Mate 30 series to launch without Android OS, Google apps and services: Report

Even though Huawei was recently granted a 90-day extension to conduct business with US firms, the smartphone maker seems like it's still headed towards trouble. A Google spokesperson has apparently told Reuters that Huawei won’t be able to use the company’s Android OS, services and popular apps like Google Maps on the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 series of handsets. Huawei is reportedly planning to launch its Mate 30 lineup on September 18 in Munich, Germany, and it will be the first major smartphone launch by the company since the US placed Huawei on the country’s entity list.

If the report is to be believed, it is still unclear what Huawei is planning to do. The company might use its home-grown Harmony OS, which can apparently be used on smartphones, wearables, TVs and more. However, this is purely speculation on our part right now and we will have to wait for some more information to be outed. As for the latest 90-day extension for Huawei by the US, it is said to not be applicable for new products such as the Huawei Mate 30. Ever since Huawei has been placed on the US’ entity list, US-based companies need to apply for a license to deal with the Chinese smartphone maker.

The spokesperson didn’t confirm whether Google had applied for a license to do business with Huawei and make its apps and services available for the company. It was previously reported that over 130 applications from US companies were submitted to conduct business with Huawei but none of them were apparently granted. While the future of Huawei’s smartphones are a bit uncertain at the moment, the company’s chip division seems to be in the clear. The HiSilicon Kirin 990 SoC is confirmed to launch on September 6, which will be fabricated on TSMC’s 7nm EUV process.
