Reliance JioFiber internet service launching on September 5: Five things you need to know

Reliance Jio JioFiber internet service is launching commercially on September 5 and while there are some things that are still unknown about the service, we do know a lot about what it will offer. The announcement of the service’s commercial rollout was made at the 42nd annual general meeting (AGM) by the company’s chairman and managing director, Mukesh Ambani. The service was being tested in multiple cities with limited users but it is expected to go live in multiple cities on the slated date. While more details about the service are expected to surface on September 5, here are the five things you need to know about it.

Reliance JioFiber tariff and speeds

Reliance announced that its JioFiber service will be priced between Rs 700 and Rs 10,000. While there are no plans announced yet, rumours suggest that the base plan by JioFiber might start at Rs 700. We also already know that the service promises speeds starting at 100mbps, which can go up to 1Gbps. This means that there’s a possibility that a plan starting at Rs 700 would offer 100mbps speed, but there’s no info on how much data the company will offer. Knowing Reliance Jio, it is possible that the company might offer 20 percent more than its competitors.

JioFiber launch offers

The option to sign up for JioFiber service is up on the company's website and the MyJio app. Additionally, users who opt for the service on launch will get an HD or a 4K LED television, along with a 4K set-top-box free of cost. While details about how one can avail the offer are still unclear, we presume that users who go for more expensive annual plans might get a 4K TV while those who opt for less expensive plans could get an HD LED TV. However, this is currently speculation on our part.

Subscription tiers and offers

There could also be different subscription tiers in the JioFiber service. During the announcement, the company mentioned that Premium JioFiber subscribers will get some extra benefits. One interesting announcement was that Premium JioFiber subscribers will get to watch First-Day-First-Show movies from their homes, at the same time when the film hits the theaters. This particular service is slated to launch by mid-2020 but we could get some more information on this on September 5.

Bundled services and fixed-line service benefits

As per Reliance Jio, JioFiber plans will come bundled with a subscription to OTT platforms. This is similar to how different network providers are partnering wiášh content provider platforms to offer free benefits to its users. While Jio has not hinted at any services, Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos subscriptions could be offered with JioFiber services. This also won’t be too surprising since the company already offers access to media and entertainment via its JioTV app.

JioFiber will also be offered with a fixed-line service that will enable users to place free calls nationally. The price levied for international calling via JioFiber’s fixed-line calling service are touted to be the lowest, one-tenth of existing industry rates, as per the company. A new unlimited international calling pack for US/Canada will also be available for Rs 500 per month.

Connectivity with Jio 4K Set Top Box

One of the major things to look forward to with the JioFiber service has to be the connectivity and features it is said to enable with the Jio 4K Set Top Box. With the set-top box that Jio demoed at the 42nd AGM, it seems like one will be able to experience VR, play games and call any operator or device, including video conferencing and more. The set-top box is also touted to support ‘console-grade’ gaming with zero latency. It’s unclear what gaming platform it supports, but Jio said the box supports every gaming controller and has an in-built graphics card.

Latest Windows 10 update causes Cortana to consume CPU resources heavily

Freshly installed Windows OS updates can sometimes get out of hand and cause unexpected bugs during everyday operation. In one such instance, Update KB4512941 (Build 18362.329) of Windows 10 is reportedly causing Cortana (SearchUI.exe) to eat up CPU resources on a number of PCs. The news of this bug comes from Windows Latest, which received word of at least two recent cases in which this problem was undoubtedly apparent. Microsoft, as you can see in this support document, has yet to acknowledge the problem, let alone fix it.

Screenshots from a couple of Reddit users show that in some PCs Windows 10 Update KB4512941 causes an unexpected, unnecessary increase in CPU usage even when the PC is idle. According to one Reddit user, restarting the PC does not help. In addition, the update reportedly handicaps Windows Search, leaving the user looking at a blank white screen instead of their search results in the Start menu. Two temporary solutions have been identified so far and neither is from Microsoft.

Part of a screenshot shared by Redditor DefinitelyYou

Quoting some of the answers posted on Reddit by users, Windows Latest offers the following solution for users suffering from this issue. Deleting a Registry key that prevents the Start menu search from sending local queries to the Bing search service from Microsoft could reduce the CPU usage. To do this, you'll have to access the path "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search” in the Windows Registry (regedit.exe) and input a Reg Value of "0" in the Reg Name "BingSearchEnabled".

If you'd rather not take the risk of playing around with the Windows Registry, you can always uninstall the faulty update. To do that, you first can open Settings (by pressing Win + I together). Then you can head to Update & security and select View update history. In the screen that follows, you can select Uninstall updates. After that, you'll be able to select the update in question (KB4512941) and click Uninstall. After the uninstall process (and restart), you shouldn't face a problem with Cortana and high CPU usage. It could be a while before Microsoft releases a patch for this issue.

Rumoured Microsoft Centaurus foldable device surfaces in two new patents

Microsoft is all set to host an event on October 2 in New York City. Alongside the expected Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7, and Surface Book 3 the tech giant is rumoured to showcase a dual-screen Surface device, codenamed Centaurus. The device has been reportedly in development for more than a year. Now, a report out of Germany discusses two new U.S. patents. These were published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and are related to the Microsoft Centaurus foldable device.

One of the patents show a hinge that could allow the device to move in a 360-degree arc. PhoneArena reports, “the Andromeda device was supposedly going to provide users with five pre-set positions including closed, concave, convex, tent mode, and full. Certain applications were to run on the device depending on the orientation of the screens, and we could see something similar for the new device.”

Another patent discusses the use of a magnetic closure. It is tipped to use magnets mounted inside multiple sides of the device. The Microsoft Centaurus foldable device is expected to be a laptop-to-tablet foldable device, unlike Andromeda that was said to be a smartphone-to-tablet foldable.

Microsoft Centaurus

Microsoft could showcase the Centaurus at October 2 event. It is reported to run Windows Lite, which appears to not be ready for prime time yet. However, we are expecting Microsoft to briefly tease the device.

Microsoft is expected to update its Surface portfolio on October 2. The Surface Laptop 3 is expected to receive an AMD variant. It is said to launch with a spec bump and include a USB-C port this time around. The Surface Pro 7 could get an LTE variant that's powered by a Snapdragon 8cx processor. Expected updates include the inclusion of  Intel 10th-generation processors, and USB-C. The Surface Book 3 is also rumoured to receive a spec-bump without any major design changes.

OnePlus 7T Pro to charge 20 percent faster using same Warp Charge 30 tech: Report

The internet is filled with reports and rumours regarding the upcoming OnePlus smartphone in the days leading up to its October 15 launch. In yet another such instance of leaked information, the upcoming OnePlus 7T Pro is reported to get the same ‘Warp Charge 30’ charging technology as the current OnePlus 7 Pro but still manage to charge about 20 percent faster. This little piece of unverified information comes from online tipster Max J. on Twitter.

Max J., who is often known to be right about his smartphone leaks and predictions, announced on Twitter a couple of days ago, “I was told by and [sic] Engineer that due to internal battery improvements the OP7T(Pro) battery now charges around 20% faster with 30W than the 7Pro does”. When asked about the launch date of the OnePlus 7T Pro, he replied simply, “Sale is 15th October”.

What the tipster means by his tweet is that the OnePlus 7T Pro will come with the same 30W ‘Warp Charge 30’ fast charging technology that's featured in the current OnePlus 7 Pro, but because of the internal battery improvements OnePlus has made, the new model will still manage to charge about 20 percent faster than its outgoing ‘non-T’ counterpart. While the OnePlus 7 Pro is powered by a 4000mAh battery, the OnePlus 7T Pro is expected to house a slightly larger 4030mAh battery.

In another tweet from last Friday, young tipster Ishan Agarwal wrote that the upcoming OnePlus 7T Pro is expected to charge from 0 to 50 percent in 20 minutes and from 0 to 100 percent in 65 minutes. While this information can't be confirmed either, it sure makes us believe that the Chinese electronics manufacturer has a significant battery upgrade up its sleeve for the next OnePlus flagship. In related news, OnePlus recently confirmed that it is indeed planning to launch its first television called the OnePlus TV. You can read more about that here.

Indeed, #OnePlus7TPro looks similar to the 7 Pro. Most updates on software side, hardware remains same with SD855+ addition. Android 10, 4080mAH Battery.
