Xiaomi could be working on four smartphones with a 108MP sensor

Last month Xiaomi recently teased that it is working on a smartphone with 108MP cameras and soon after, Samsung unveiled its 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor. This sensor is touted to produce images with a resolution of 12,032 x 9,024 pixels and it seems that Xiaomi is working on three new handsets that will feature Samsung’s 108MP sensor. The news comes via XDA Developers, who spotted that the MIUI’s Mi Gallery app is adding innate support for viewing 108MP images in full resolution. The support is apparently being added for devices codenamed “tucana“, “draco“, “umi” and “cmi,“ and Samsung’s 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor could be used on the devices.

The codenames are said to represent unreleased Xiaomi smartphones but there’s a chance that not all of the four devices could be launched under the Xiaomi branding. The company might split the devices under Xiaomi and Redmi brand names, which seems like a more sensible business decision. However, this is all conjecture at this point and we advise you to take this with a pinch of salt. The MIUI Gallery app being updated for viewing 108MP images in full resolution is also a hint towards the increasing megapixel count. Xiaomi updated its Gallery app when smartphones with a 48MP camera were released so that one can view the images in full resolution.

The Samsung 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor that Xiaomi will use on its upcoming phones has over 100 million effective pixels. Thanks to this, it is touted to capture notable images in 'extreme' lighting conditions. The sensor size is 1/1.33-inch, and it implements Tetracell technology that combines four pixels into one, which is basically pixel binning.  It can also help minimise noise and improve an image’s colour accuracy at the same time.

Amazon Prime Video releases first poster of The Family Man, shot on a OnePlus smartphone

As the rise of streaming platforms like Amazon Prime in India takes hold, we're seeing the rise of content that is not typically 'Bollywood'. Shows like Mirzapur have given Indian audiences a grittier style of content for them to consume. And to add to their library of great content, we’ve now got The Family Man. An Amazon Prime exclusive, the first character poster for the show was revealed and it was shot on a OnePlus smartphone. We’re not sure exactly which model of the OnePlus it was shot on, though. It could be the OnePlus 7T or the 7T Pro.

The first official character poster features Srikant Tiwari - the lead protagonist, played by Padma Shri Awardee and National Award winner Manoj Bajpayee. Created by the duo of Krishna D.K. and Raj Nidimoru, The Family Man is set to release this September, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. The trailer for the show releases 5th September 2019.

In addition to the first look poster, OnePlus will also be setting up interactive billboards all across India that audiences can engage with using their smartphone cameras to access exclusive virtual content about the show. This could be some sort of Augmented Reality as well.

Commenting on the association, Gaurav Gandhi, Director and Country GM, Amazon Prime Video India said, “India is a mobile-first country and a large number of our customers love to watch Amazon Prime Video on their smartphones. We constantly look to engage and delight this fast-growing customer base with our compelling content and innovative marketing initiatives. We are excited about this unique collaboration with OnePlus for our latest Amazon Original The Family Man, which includes the first reveal of the character poster, that was shot exclusively on a OnePlus phone.  We look forward to delighting our ardent mobile-first customers with this sneak peek into the compelling and gritty world of The Family Man”.

“With our smartphones, we are constantly thinking of different ways in which we can engage our community in new ways. Our association with Amazon Prime Video is a result of the synergy between both brands and our common philosophy and it seemed like a very natural fit to unveil the new Amazon Original Series, The Family Man character poster through an image shot on a OnePlus device,” said Vikas Agarwal, General Manager OnePlus India.

OnePlus TV to support Dolby Vision, will feature 8 speakers with 50W output

OnePlus TV is gearing up for the launch of OnePlus TV later this month. Several details about the TV  have already been revealed by the OnePlus CEO Pete Lau. Now, ahead of its launch, the OnePlus TV has made its way to the Amazon India website. The listing reveals that the TV will feature a 55-inch 4K QLED display with support for Dolby Vision. Further, OnePlus TV will have 8 speakers with 50W output, which will be powered by Dolby Atmos sound.

Last week, Lau revealed that the OnePlus TV will run Android TV and it will receive software updates for at least three years. Hence, the TV will offer features like access to Google Assistant and the Play Store. Further, he said in a post that the goal is to offer the same fast and smooth experience of OnePlus phones for the OnePlus TV and the only way to achieve that was by adopting OnePlus TV. However, it is expected to ship with a modified version of Android TV OS.

The dedicated Amazon page confirms that the OnePlus TV will come with a 55-inch QLED display. It will have 4K resolution with Dolby Vision support, which means the users will have access to the hardware to play HDR 4K video content. Previous rumours claim that OnePlus TV would be announced in four different sizes: 43-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch size variants. Moreover, the listing states that OnePlus TV will have a total of 8 speakers, and a "50W output with punchy base to fill your living room.”

The OnePlus TV is said to come with voice control and interaction, which means it could be equipped with far-field microphones. We also previously came across a report that claimed that OnePlus has certified a Bluetooth Remote, which is said to work on Bluetooth 4.2. It could feature a dedicated button for accessing an AI assistant like the Google Assistant. You can read more about the OnePlus TV's expected features here.

While there is no official release date yet, the OnePlus TV India launch is rumoured to take place on September 26.

OnePlus 7, 7 Pro receive Android Q Developer Preview 5

With only a few hours to go before Google releases Android 10 for its Pixel devices, OnePlus has announced the roll-out of the Android Q Developer Preview 5 for its flagship smartphones, the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. The new beta update for Android 10 (previously called Android Q) comes with improvements for system functions and system stability. One can download the ROM images for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro here and here respectively to perform a local upgrade to Android Q Developer Preview 5.

The news of the fifth beta update for Android 10 comes in the form of a forum post by OnePlus Global Product Operations Manager Manu J on the OnePlus Community. According to Manu J, Developer Preview 5 includes, apart from the aforementioned improvements, support for OnePlus full-screen gestures. With this, a user should be able to swipe inward from the extreme left and right edges (or the bottom edge, depending on the user’s choice) of the display to go back.

The list of bugs in this beta release includes compatibility issues with various apps, including Google Pay, some lag, and stability issues. “As it is still in an early stage of development, we do not recommend flashing this ROM if you have little or no experience in software development or flashing custom ROMs. Proceed at your own risk!” writes Manu J in the forum post. It’s advisable to perform a full backup of all the data on the phone before making the jump.

Users of Android Q Developer Preview 4 can upgrade to Developer Preview 5 through an over-the-air (OTA) update. Users who have a stable version of Android Pie and want to try Developer Preview 5 of the upcoming Android 10 release can download the ROM image from the aforementioned links and transfer it to their device’s internal storage. After that they can go to Settings > System > System updates and click on the top right icon to select Local upgrade. They can then select the ROM image to start installing it. It’s important to note that this local upgrade erases all the contents of the phone, so a full backup of all personal data is recommended.
