Mi Mix 4 with MIUI 11 to be launched on September 24: Report

Even though the Mi Mix 3 never made it to the Indian smartphone market, there's no harm in looking forward to the launch of its successor. According to a recent report by Russian tech website Xiaomishka, Xiaomi will launch the Mi Mix 4 on September 4 in Shanghai. Xiaomi's upcoming flagship model will be the first to run the company's MIUI 11 software that's based on Android 10. If the Mi Mix 4 is eventually sold in India, it will replace the now dated Mi Mix 2, whose review you can read here.

Xiaomi is known to launch a new Mi Mix device every year between the months of September and December. At least, this has been the case so far since the launch of the original Mi Mix back in October 2016. The report goes on to say that the device could get a different name as the company's licence to use the ‘Mix’ brand is expiring soon. If Xiaomi manages to renew the licence, the new device could get the same ‘Mix’ logo on its back panel.

Sadly, the report does not talk about the chipset that will power the Mi Mix 4, or the kind of camera sensors it will employ. All we know so far is that it will be the first Xiaomi device to run MIUI 11, which is the Chinese smartphone maker's proprietary software based on Android 10. There's no mention of the Mi Mix 4's price or availability in the report.

The Mi Mix 2 was the last model in the series to enter India. The Mi Mix 2, which is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and 6GB of RAM, currently sells on Flipkart for Rs 29,999. The Mi Mix 4 could employ the newer Snapdragon 855 chipset or even the Plus edition of the same. The Mi Mix 2 has a single 12MP rear camera and a single 5MP selfie camera. According to some sources, the Mi Mix 4 could feature a Samsung-developed 108MP primary rear camera. The Mi Mix 2 also features a 5.99-inch IPS LCD panel and a 3400mAh battery with 18W fast charging. The Mi Mix 4 should get an upgrade in those two areas as well.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 to be thinner, feature a clamshell design and be less expensive than its predecessor

Samsung is rumoured to be working on its next foldable phone, which is currently dubbed the Galaxy Fold 2. While details are scarce about the upcoming handset, it was previously reported to come with less storage in order to be more affordable. Now, citing people who know about the upcoming device, Bloomberg reports that the Galaxy Fold 2 will come equipped with a 6.7-inch inner display and it can be folded onto itself like a clamshell to become squarish in shape. The reported design is different from the current Samsung Galaxy Fold smartphone that turns into a rectangular device when folded vertically.

The launch of this new Galaxy Fold 2 is could depend upon how its predecessor is received by the buyers. It is also said to feature a punch hole camera design on the top portion of its inner display to accommodate a front-facing camera, similar to the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Note10 handsets. Its outer portion could feature dual-cameras that are said to face the rear when the handset is unfolded and the front, when it is folded. The Bloomberg report places emphasis on the square aspect ratio Galaxy Fold 2, which is said to be similar to smartphones when it is unfolded.

The current Samsung Galaxy Fold has a larger display and opens to a square display aspect ratio. This requires apps to be scaled for the non-standard display but this problem could be solved with the next year’s Galaxy Fold. Samsung is also said to be testing Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) for the inner display of its next foldable handset, which is touted to measure merely 3 percent in thickness over standard glass displays used on smartphones. This is apparently to ensure that what happened with the Galaxy Fold doesn’t happen again.

For those unaware about the Samsung Galaxy Fold fiasco, the handset malfunctioned for some reviewers soon after the South-Korean smartphone maker launched it. This was sometime after the handset was announced at MWC 2019 and since then, the Galaxy Fold sales have been postponed. It is now reported that the device will finally be made available globally during the IFA 2019 event since the display issues it suffered from have been fixed.

Google Pixel 4 lineup hits FCC, revealing four model numbers

The Google Pixel 4's launch seems imminent as details have reportedly appeared in FCC listings. The company has reportedly filed four new FCC listings that are said to be for the Pixel 4. They also hint at support for Soli chips, which was allegedly confirmed by Google in one of the videos the company posted on Twitter. Google is said to have been working on the Soli motion-sensing radar for over five years now.

Four Google devices - G020I, G020J, G020MN, G020PQ - labelled as “phones" have reportedly appeared on FCC listings. Moreover, 9to5Google reports, “They (Google) have requested a band of 5G connectivity from the FCC (58-63.5 GHz), but we’ve learned from public research and a past FCC waiver that Google’s Project Soli works on this same millimeter wave wireless technology.”

For those of you who don’t know, a wireless device needs to pass through FCC approval before it can be sold in the US. Further, when a device is submitted for approval, the FCC publishes information about the “bands” of the wireless spectrum it uses.

As per past leaks and rumours, the Google Pixel 4 is said to feature a 5.7-inch Full HD+ OLED display, whereas the Pixel 4 XL could sport a bigger, 6.3-inch Quad HD+ OLED display. Moreover, both  the smartphones could come with 90Hz displays, which Google is reportedly planning to call “Smooth Display".

Using the Soli motion-sensing radar, users are said to be able to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls, just by waving their hand(s).

Previously leaked images have also revealed a new camera setup on the upcoming Google Pixel 4 smartphones. Both the devices are tipped to sport a dual rear camera setup: a 12MP shooter with phase-detect auto-focus along with a 16MP telephoto lens. Rumour also has it that Google might be developing a DSLR-like attachment for the Pixel that may become an available accessory.

Samsung Galaxy Fold to reportedly start shipping from September 27 after IFA reannouncement

The Samsung Galaxy Fold might finally release in September, according to information relayed by noted tipster Evan Blass. The launch date for the revised Samsung Galaxy Fold is set for September 27. Blass first wrote the date as a tweet and then posted an alleged screenshot of a display (possibly of the Galaxy Fold) with the date Friday, September 27.

A new report from South Korea also claimed the users who pre-ordered the Galaxy Fold in the country will be receiving their devices on September 11. We expect Samsung to ‘reannounce’ the phone at IFA on September 6. The same report states that Samsung is preparing for a batch of 20,000-30,000 units as part of the first phase of sales in South Korea. But, another report also claims the number of units is fewer, some 2500 or so, out of which 300 to 400 units will be made available to each South Korean network carrier.

It was earlier rumoured that Samsung will indeed launch the Galaxy Fold in September, but the exact date wasn’t confirmed. Samsung had to postpone its plan of launching the product to the market after tech reviewers who received the device for review peeled off a protective layer on the display that looked like a screen protector.

Later in July, Samsung detailed the changes it had made to the Galaxy Fold’s design to make it more durable. For one, there is a new hinge mechanism along with an extended protective layer on the display which prevents particles from getting in and damaging the panel. Samsung has also said it has made the UI more user-friendly with support for more apps for the foldable display.
