New LG patent showcases double folding design for a smartphone

If you are one looking forward to a foldable phone from LG, then there is good news for you. A patent has leaked online showcasing what could be a foldable phone from LG. The unique thing about the LG foldable phone is that it has two folds. The leak comes courtesy Lets Go Digital and shows that the device can be folded twice. The device will also come with a stylus.

When the device is unfolded, i.e., in its tablet form, it has a 16:10 aspect ratio. The patent shows the device has thin bezels on three sides. The fourth side has a wide bezel that houses a triple camera setup. As for the stylus, there is a place to store it in one of the two hinges. When the device is folded, the smartphone looks to have an aspect ratio in line with modern smartphones. How the device looks in the real world is something to look forward to.

Samsung is the only one that  launched its foldable smartphone in the market and after a rocky initial launch, the foldable device is now relaunching. Huawei’s Mate X foldable smartphone is reportedly going on sale in September, but there is no information on the official launch of the device. Google is also said to be working on a foldable device but we shouldn't expect a launch anytime soon.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, is the only other smartphone maker working on a foldable device that folds twice, similar to the LG one.

How foldable smartphones work in real-world scenarios is something we will have to wait and see. Historically, we have seen that it isn't the first mover's advantage that works but rater, the device that perfects the use cases. Dell was the first device maker to launch a phablet in the form of the Dell Streak but it was the Samsung Galaxy Note that cemented the concept of a large screen phone and the rest, as they say, is history. How foldable phone will work in everyday scenarios is something we will have to wait and see.

Xiaomi working on a switch that will disable ads on MIUI

MIUI is one of the most popular custom Android interfaces in India owing to Xiaomi’s top spot in the Indian smartphone market. Yet, while the company’s devices have been praised for the 'value for money' hardware they offer, the interface itself has faced backlash for the company’s strategy to put ads in the UI. Showing ads on MIUI is a fairly recent development and ever since it was implemented, users and rivals have come together in criticising the move.   Now, Xiaomi Product Director and MIUI Experience Head confirmed that the company will be rolling out a switch that will allow users to disable ads in MIUI. The feature is being tested presently and could roll out with MIUI 11 which could be based on Android 10.  He further confirmed that the feature will be rolled out to all Xiaomi phones in the next major update, possibly MIUI 11. The company’s independent brand Redmi has already taken measures to prevent ads from popping up on the Redmi K20 and the Redmi K20, two of the brand’s most premium offerings in India. However, other phones like the Redmi Note 7 Pro and the likes are still plagued with ads.   Last month, the Xiaomi executive said that the company has been working on reducing the number of ads users receive. Furthermore, Xiaomi CEO and co-founder Lei Jun had also confirmed that along with reducing ads in the interface, it will also remove inappropriate ads that mar the user experience. In case you don’t mind ads in the interface, Xiaomi will be modifying the ad algorithm so that users receive ads that are relevant to them.    Xiaomi claims to be a software company primarily. The hardware is only a means to get users to use its software. Yet, it’s hardware business continues to rake in the majority of the company’s revenues. The software and internet services contributed to 9.7 percent of the total revenue, a marginal growth from 9.1 percent last year.    Previous reports have tipped that MIUI 11 will be announced in China on September 24th alongside the Mi MIX 4 smartphone. MIUI 11 is presently being tested with the UI based on Android 10.

Apple iPhone SE successor to be launched in early 2020 to combat sales drop: Report

The Apple iPhone SE may have been taken off Indian shelves for good but its successor is set to make an entry in early 2020, reads a recent report by Nikkei Asian Review. The Cupertino-based company’s new low-cost iPhone model is expected to combat the ongoing sales decline Apple is seeing in its current iPhone range. As we reported back in May, Apple recently lost its top position in the global market share to Huawei.

The current iPhone range’s slump in sales can be seen in Apple’s production strategy for this year. According to the report, Apple’s initial production run for 2019 turned out 10 percent fewer units compared to the 80–85 million units Apple produced last year. Apple may increase this if there’s more demand. “The cheaper iPhone SE could serve as a sales momentum kicker the first half next year, if the new premium iPhones do not perform well in the coming months,” said Jeff Pu, an expert Tech Analyst at GF Securities, to Nikkei Asian Review.

The report goes on to say that the iPhone SE successor is expected to be of the same size as the older iPhone 8 in that it will have the same 4.7-inch display. Unlike the current line-up of iPhones, which uses an OLED panel for the display, the iPhone SE successor will come with an IPS LCD panel to save costs. Japan Display is expected to be the primary supplier of this panel, with LG Display being the secondary. Nothing else about the iPhone SE successor is known at the moment.

In related news, Apple recently confirmed the launch date of its 2019 iPhone line-up. Apple will launch the new range on September 10 at the Apple Park corporate headquarters in Cupertino, California. While the successors to the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max are expected to come in the same black, silver, and gold colours, the successor to the iPhone XR is expected to come in as many as five new colours. All three 2019 models are expected to be powered by Apple’s new A13 chipset and feature a new Taptic engine.
