Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 to feature 90Hz display, 40W fast charging, pop-up camera: Report

Last week, we reported that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 would be launched on September 24 with Android 10-based MIUI 11 software running right out of the box. Now though, we've learnt through a new leak that the new Xiaomi flagship smartphone will sport a 90Hz refresh rate display panel, a 40W fast-charging technology, and a pop-up selfie camera. This update comes in the form of a social media post from New technology on Weibo.

Since this new information from Weibo isn't verified, we advise you to take it with a pinch of salt. That said, it's not hard to imagine Xiaomi equipping the Mi Mix 4 with all the aforementioned features. The Mi Mix 4 could well join the list of smartphones that currently offer a display panel with a refresh rate of 90Hz, such as the OnePlus 7 Pro and Nubia Red Magic 3. The upcoming Google Pixel 4 too is expected to come with a 90Hz display panel. You can read more about that here.

From what we've learnt in the past, the Mi Mix 4 could come with a 108MP primary rear camera sensor developed by Samsung. Whether the selfie camera is a motorised pop-up unit or a regular panel-embedded unit is something that's not clear yet. We originally believed Xiaomi's new flagship would come with an 18W fast-charging technology but the recent Weibo post makes us wonder if it could be a 40W system. We should be able to learn more about the Mi Mix 4 in the coming weeks.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is a successor to the Mi Mix 3 but the last model in the series to make it to India was the Mi Mix 2 (find our review of it here). The new Mi Mix 4 is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset (or even the Plus variant of the same). Given that Xiaomi's licence to use the ‘Mix’ name is currently expiring, the upcoming Mi Mix 4 could be sold under a different name. If Xiaomi decides to renew the licence, it could sport the well-established Mix logo on its back panel.

Honor announces PocketVision app that uses AI to assist the visually impaired

Honor made a bunch of new announcements at the ongoing IFA 2019 trade show and one of the more notable launches was a new AI-powered app for helping the visually impaired. Called PocketVision, the new app is touted to help people with low vision and the visually challenged read text easily. The app was developed by the company Eyecoming and it comes with three main features to make reading easier for people. It has a text-to-speech mode, which works on Honor’s HiAI and employs Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for converting images to text and narrate it to the user.

There’s also a zoom-in mode that enables users to zoom into a piece of text by using their handset’s volume buttons. A Negative Image Mode will enable one to apply colour filters over text to enhance or change the contrast, invert colours and more for improved readability. The PocketVision app is said to work best with the Honor 20 Pro, which features a 48MP main camera, along with an 8MP sensor that is paired with a telephoto lens. The app can be downloaded via the Huawei AppGallery and it supports English, Portuguese, Chinese, German, Spanish, and Italian languages.

Similar to the PocketVision app, we previously came across a report that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is working on an app that would enable the visually-challenged to identify currency notes. The app will apparently be able to identify the denomination of notes by clicking an image. However, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, has already created a similar app that can recognise both old and new currency notes and announce them out loud. The app called Roshni is free to download from the Google Play Store and is the first app to successfully recognise new INR currency notes.

We spent some time with the beta version of Roshni back in January and you can check out our impressions of the app and a walkthrough of how it functions here.

Asus refreshes ZenBook 14, 15 with ScreenPad 20, introduces ZenBook Flip 13

Asus appears to be on a roll. Less than a week after launching the new VivoBook series of laptops in India, Asus has refreshed two of its existing ZenBook models and added a new convertible model to its premium laptop line-up. In other words, Asus has updated the existing ZenBook 14 and ZenBook 15 with its proprietary ScreenPad 2.0 technology, which essentially introduces a secondary display in the laptop's touchpad. We got our first look at this technology earlier in May during Computex 2019. Asus has also introduced a new convertible laptop called the ZenBook Flip 13. According to a press release sent by Asus, the company's newly launched range starts at Rs 76,990.

The updated ZenBook 14 (UX434) and ZenBook 15 (UX534) feature Asus’ proprietary ScreenPad 2.0 technology. Debuted first in the Asus ZenBook Pro 15 last year, ScreenPad essentially marries the laptop's touchpad with a secondary display. Put differently, the touchpad doubles as a small secondary display in the laptop's keyboard island. ScreenPad 2.0 provides the user with quick shortcuts while using applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. It can also be used as a calculator and a number pad, among other things. You can read more about ScreenPad here in our reivew of the ZenBook Pro 15. The new ZenBook 14 starts at Rs 79,990 while the new ZenBook 15 starts at Rs 1,19,990.

The Asus ZenBook 14 is powered by up to an Intel 8th Gen Core i7 CPU with up to 16GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce MX250 graphics card. Storage is taken care of by a 1TB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive. The display on the ZenBook 14 is a 14-inch Full HD IPS LCD panel, while the ScreenPad on it is a 5.65-inch Full HD IPS LCD panel. The ZenBook 15, on the other hand, offers the same CPU, RAM amount, and storage capacity but features a more capable Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q graphics card with up to 4GB of video RAM. The display on the ZenBook 15 is a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS LCD panel.

The ZenBook Flip 13 (UX362), which Asus calls the world's most compact convertible laptop, does not sport a ScreenPad like the other two ZenBook models. It does, however, sport an integrated haptic number pad within its touchpad. The Asus ZenBook Flip 13 is powered by up to an Intel 8th Gen Core i7 CPU with 8GB of RAM and an integrated Intel graphics card. Storage is taken care of by a 512GB PCIe NVMe solid-state drive. The display on the ZenBook Flip 13 is a flippable 13.3-inch Full HD touchscreen IPS LCD panel. Available in only a single variant, the Asus ZenBook Flip 13 costs Rs 76,990.

Asus has refreshed its ZenBook line-up of premium laptops a few months before it is expected to bring in Intel's 10th Gen Core series of CPUs. It has also dropped the ZenBook Flip 13 alongside the existing ZenBook Flip S convertible laptop (read our review of it here). In related news, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer launched only last week a new set of VivoBook laptops namely the VivoBook 14 X403, VivoBook 14 X409, and VivoBook 15 X509. You can read our first impressions of the Asus VivoBook 14 X403 here. The newly announced Asus ZenBook models are currently on sale on Amazon.in, Flipkart, and Paytm Mall.

Amazon Great Indian Festival sale and Flipkart Big Billion Days sale to kick off soon: Heres what we know so far

With Diwali celebrations coming up, online retailers are gearing up to announce their annual sales. While Amazon hosts the Great Indian Festival every year around this time, Flipkart is preparing to announce the Big Billion Days sale, which going by previous sales, could be held around September 21. While the two e-commerce platforms have yet to announce the dates and deals on gadgets, Amazon has a dedicated microsite for the sale where it is touting ‘Never Before Offers’ on smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy M30, OnePlus 7 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi A3. The online retailer is also teasing some special new launches, exchange offers, no-cost EMI option and deals on smartphones from 2019.

Flipkart, on the other hand, has revealed some details about the Mobile Exchange Program, which is said to be something to look out for this during the upcoming Big Billion Days sale. As per the e-commerce platform, all working phones will be considered in the exchange program this year, even if they have broken displays. The exchange value will also be based on the condition and the variant of a handset, instead of a pre-set fixed price. Additionally, Flipkart says it will also accept old smartphones that aren’t being considered under an exchange program by other online retailers. One can choose the ‘any other smartphone' option while opting for the exchange program, in case their device is not present in the list.

Both Amazon and Flipkart are once again preparing for the festive sales season, where they reported strong growṭh last year. In 2018, Amazon said that more than half a million users performed some sort of transaction on its platform during last years’ festive sale while Flipkart is said to have doubled its customer base during the same festive months of the sale.
