iPhone 11 with dual cameras, night mode and A13 Bionic SoC launched at Rs 64,999

The iPhone 11 is the successor to the iPhone XR and catches up with the iPhone features from last year and then some. The iPhone 11 retains the 6.1-inch Super Retina LCD display but adds one more camera at the back. It also comes in a wide array of colours.

iPhone 11 specs and features

The iPhone 11 looks the same from the front with an all-glass design. Apple said they’ve used the ‘toughest glass ever on a smartphone’ and backed it up with a video of how the iPhone survived drops from a table, getting all mixed up in a ladies’ handbag and more. It’s also water and dust resistant up to 2 meters for 30 minutes. The notch is retained and comes with a wider 12MP TrueDepth camera sensor that facilitates both faster faceID and a wider field of view for selfies.

The 6.1-inch LCD display supports a wide-colour gamut and comes with Apple’s proprietary TrueTone colour optimisation system. Further, the display has haptic touch feedback and supports tap to wake. There’s not much that's changed here.

On the back, there’s a dual-camera system. An upgrade from the previous iPhone XR that came with only one. As rumoured, the dual-camera feature is housed in a square camera bump. The bump itself is part of the glass body and not a separate unit.

The primary camera has a 12MP wide 26mm sensor with f/1.8 and 6-element lens. The second camera is ultra-wide with a 120-degree field of view and a f/2.4 5-element lens. The ultrawide camera can zoom out by 2X. The camera UI will show what both lens will see when you’re shooting a frame so you can make the choice to switch when needed. Now that there’s two lenses, the iPhone 11 can acquire stereoscopic depth data, so you can also shoot portrait photos of your pets.

Speaking of the camera software, Apple has added ‘semantic rendering’ that relights photos based on the subject along with ‘smart HDR’ achieved by multiscale tone mapping. The iPhone 11 also catches up with the rest of the smartphone industry with a night mode. It’s used to capture low-light photos and comes on automatically and uses adaptive bracketing to light low-lit frames.

Next on to video, the dual camera can also be used to shoot 4K videos at 60 FPS. It comes with ‘cinematic video stabilisation’ and extended dynamic range for video. There’s also Quick Take, a feature where you can long press the shutter button in the camera to start recording a video in between shooting photos. The 12MP front camera can also take 4K videos at 60 FPS and slo-mo videos to take what Apple called slo-fies.

Coming to the hardware inside, the iPhone 11 is powered by the same Apple A13 Bionic chipset that also powers the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. It’s a 7nm SoC that Apple claimed brings a 20 percent boost in performance. In typical Apple fashion, the A13 Bionic was hailed as the ‘fastest CPU’ and ‘fasted GPU’ ever on a smartphone. Apple also claimed it to be the most power efficient chip it has manufactured, with a 40 percent boost in efficiency. This allows the iPhone 11 to last an hour longer than the iPhone XR.

Topping it all off, the iPhone 11 gets spatial sound with Dolby Atmos support and wireless charging. FaceID is also apparently faster. The iPhone 11 will ship with iOS 13 out of the box. The update will be available on September 13 on older iPhones from iPhone 6s and later. iOS 13.1 with additional features will drop on September 30.

iPhone 11 price and availability

The iPhone 11 will be available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB variants. There are five colours to choose from — Purple, green, yellow, black, white and PRODUCT (RED). In India, the iPhone 11 will start from Rs 64,900 and will be available through authorized resellers and select carriers.

Apple will start selling the iPhone 11 online from Friday, September 13 and will be available in offline stores a week later, from September 20.

The iPhone 11 will start at $699 (roughly Rs 50,000) and will be available in the US from September 20. Buyers in the US can pre-order the iPhone 11 from September 13. Apple will offer a year’s subscription of Apple TV+ bundled with the phone, and if you are upgrading from a iPhone XR, the price is slashed to $399 (roughly Rs. 28,600).

Apple also announced the latest Apple Watch 5 that comes with an Always-On display. You can read all about it, right here. There's also the Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade gaming service announcements here and the new 10.2-inch iPad here.

Apple Watch Series 5 with Always-On display launched starting at Rs 40,900

Apple has unveiled a new Apple Watch Series 5 at its Special Event on September 10 and as expected, it features some new upgrades over its predecessor. The most notable addition is the new Always-On display that will show the time and other information without the need to tap the display. Alongside the new Always-On display, the device also has some other new features.

The Emergency SOS feature on the Apple Watch Series 5 is getting an upgrade. Every cellular version of the device supports international emergency calling in over 150 countries. In addition, the new watch also comes equipped with a built-in compass that will be available as a standalone app on the device. The compass can also be added to watch faces, works with the Maps app and also shows additional information like latitude, longitude, current elevation and incline.

Apple announces new 102 inch iPad

The 9.7-inch iPad has been the most popular iPad for Apple, bringing countless new users to the walled garden of Apple’s eco-system. This popular iPad has now received a much-needed upgrade, with Apple bringing it up to par with what is expected of Apple’s modern-day large display computer.

The new iPad now has a 10.2-inch display, which is going to be the most notable change. The other big change is the fact that the 7th generation iPad now uses Apple’s 10x fusion chip, paired with an undisclosed amount of RAM. The new iPad is also going to be compatible with the full-sized smart keyboard, making the 7th generation iPad as good as an entry-level laptop, for a fraction of the price, but with better performance and a super manageable form factor.

The 7th generation iPad starts retailing at $329, with students and educational institutes getting a special price of $299. The new iPad will be available starting September 30. Another interesting feature of the 7th generation iPad is the fact that it is made of fully recycled aluminium. Obviously, the new iPad will be running the newest iPadOS, which will bring all of the incredible features of the new operating system to this entry-level tablet from Apple.

It is interesting that Apple took to the stage to announce a new iPad during their September event. Typically, new iPad announcements are reserved for later in October, so an early announcement for the company’s entry-level iPad means that we could be seeing more powerful models, later in October.

The new seventh-generation iPad comes in silver, space gray and gold finishes in 32GB and 128GB configurations. The iPad starts at INR 29,900 for the Wi-Fi model and INR 40,900 for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model, and is available through Apple Authorized Resellers and select carriers (prices may vary).
