We told you so: Apple iPhone 11 Pro indeed sports a triple camera setup

It’s not every day that we at Digit get to have a told-you-so moment about tech predictions but when we do, we feel proud of ourselves. And today, we’re undoubtedly proud of ourselves. Nearly eight months after we published exclusive renders of the 2019 ‘triple-camera’ iPhone, Apple has launched the iPhone 11 Pro, which indeed features a much-anticipated trio of camera sensors on its back panel. You can check out our iPhone 11 Pro launch story here, and our original prediction story here.

What we predicted back in January...

We’re pleased to inform you that even the physical appearance and layout of the triple camera setup on the recently launched iPhone 11 Pro match those of the unit depicted in our renders from early January. The slightly protruding camera square on the back panel of the iPhone 11 Pro consists of three camera sensors, two of which are stacked vertically. The third sensor is placed between the two in a new column on the right. Just above the third sensor is a single LED ‘True Tone’ flash.

“Not knowing the scale at which the image was rendered, it is difficult to say which variant will sport the three cameras. However, given the drastic change in the camera setup, this, most probably, is our closest look at the top of the line 2019 iPhone,” we had averred in our prediction story early this year. Though we weren’t certain exactly which iPhone 11 models would get the triple camera setup, we were sure there would be three new models in this year’s line-up.

...what Apple has revealed on the new iPhone 11 Pro.

As it turns out, the Apple iPhone 11—which succeeds the iPhone XR as the most affordable model in the current range—is the only one not to come with a triple camera setup. Instead it sports a dual camera setup (wide + extra-wide). The iPhone 11 Pro and the larger iPhone 11 Pro Max are the only ones in the range to get the third, telephoto sensor. Now that we’ve nailed our big prediction of the year, it’s time to set our sights on a detailed, exhaustive review of the new iPhone 11 series.

LG 2019 OLED TVs to get Nvidia G-Sync support via an update

LG has announced that its 2019 lineup of OLED TVs will be receiving Nvidia G-Sync support. This includes the E9 and C9 series of OLED televisions by the company, which includes the 55 and 65-inch model in the E9 lineup and 55, 65 and 77-inch models in the C9 series. These TVs will now work with Nvidia’s proprietary G-Sync technology, which means that one can hook them up to a system that features an Nvidia GPU to get the same refresh rate as the game they are playing. The new feature will be made available for compatible TVs via a firmware update, in a few weeks.

With Nvidia G-Sync, there will be no screen tearing when one is playing games but the feature will only work with Nvidia’s RTX or GTX 16 series of GPUs. The aforementioned LG TVs already come with support for variable refresh rates and so does the company’s 2019 lineup, which also supports up to 120Hz at 1440p and up to 60Hz refresh rate for 4K content. Since GPUs on PCs don’t yet support HDMI 2.1 interface, the new update is a notable addition. HDMI 2.1 brings auto low latency mode (ALLM), variable refresh rate, EARC and many more features.

Speaking of upcoming TVs, OnePlus will soon enter the same segment with the OnePlus TV, which is shaping up to be a rather interesting device. The company’s CEO Pete Lau has been revealing information about the upcoming device in bits and pieces. Lau previously revealed that the TV will be powered by Android and sports a 55-inch panel with Dolby Vision support. After revealing the device’s remote, Lau recently outed an image teasing the TV’s design. The image shows off the kevlar finish on the OnePlus TV’s rear and there seems to be a stand that holds the panel upright. You can read more about this here.

Chrome 77 update with new performance metrics, native lazy loading and more now rolling out

Google Chrome Version 77 is now available for download on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. The latest version of Google’s browser comes with several new features like new performance metrics, form capabilities, and Origin Trials. As one would expect, there are a slew of bug fixes, 52 security fixes to be exact and some fixes that were contributed by external researchers are listed on Google’s blog post. Most new features ášhat are available with the update are aimed at web developers but a UI related change to the browser includes the removal of the UI indicator for Extended Validation (EV) certificates.

Google is also aiming to improve the performance of its internet browser with the new Chrome 77 update. In Chrome's Developer Tools section, there’s a new option called "Largest Contentful Paint" that can be used to measure the time taken by Chrome to display a readable version of a website in the user-visible section of the browser, while the rest of the site is still loading in the background. As one would assume, this option will enable and optimise the elements that should ideally load first rather than the content that isn’t visible immediately on the screen.

A new IO element as part of Google’s Origin Trials is a new Contact Picker API that can be used by websites to access and select contacts from a user's phone. For those unaware, Origin Trials is a new approach by Google to enable experimentation with web platform features in a safer manner. It features a dashboard that enables users to sign up for experimental features. In addition, system admins can now implement and force configuration on Chrome browser across an enterprise. This new feature is called "BrowserGuestModeEnforced."
