The OnePlus 7T Pro could be launching on October 10

As if OnePlus hasn’t already released enough phones for the year yet, the Chinese smartphone giant is teasing the successor of the OnePlus 7T, the OnePlus 7T Pro. According to a tweet from the company, the launch could take place on October 10. We can’t be sure that the teaser is completely right, but our hunch is that the OnePlus 7T Pro will be unveiled then. These guesses are based on the fact that the launch date seems to align with information from other leaks that claim the OnePlus 7T Pro will be launched in October.

The OnePlus 7T was launched in India on September 26 along with the OnePlus TV series. The OnePlus 7T Pro is being launched two weeks later. It was clear that the OnePlus 7 Pro dwarfed the OnePlus 7 and the company is avoiding that mistake with this release. The device is expected to go on sale starting October 15, as per a listing on HDFC Bank’s SmartBuy offer page.

The OnePlus 7T Pro is expected to be rather similar to the OnePlus 7 Pro. But, OnePlus is expected to launch the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition as a special edition model. They will both be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+. Both phones could come with 12GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage. It looks as if the OnePlus 7T Pro could also come with the 6.67-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It should be noted that the 7T pro will come with a vertical camera stack and run Android 10. The phone is expected to come with a 4,080mAh battery as well.

More leaks of the Pixel 4 surface a few days before the official launch

If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you’ll know that there have been numerous leaks of the Pixel 4 at this point that we can pretty much tell exactly what’s coming our way. We already know that Live HDR, Audio Zoom and more features are set to ship with the phone. We also know that the phone will come with face unlock and motion sense technology powered by the Soli chip. But, just a few days before the official launch of the Pixel 4 on October 15, another leak has hit the internet and gives us a bit more info on the device.

Two new videos have now surfaced online that show us how efficient the face unlock system is. The video, which was obtained by 9to5Google, looks like a promotional video wherein a woman can be seen checking her notifications. The time it takes to switch between screens is instantaneous with little to no lag time. The other video shows off the phones Motion sense tech. In the video, users can be seen making use of the Motion Sense feature to perform various actions like dismissing an alarm, and skipping tracks on Youtube Music. It gives us a better look at what these features have to offer when the phone finally launches on October 15.

9to5Google has also gone one step further and shared the spec sheet of the Pixel 4. From the sheet we can see that the Pixel 4 will come with a 5.7-inch Full HD+ Smooth Display along with a 2,800mAh battery, while the Pixel 4 XL will come with a 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Smooth Display and a 3,700mAh battery. The Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor along with with Pixel Neural Core for processing images. The two phones will probably come with 6GB RAM and come in 64GB and 128GB memory variants. Both devices will come with a dual rear camera setup of which one is a 12MP dual pixel lens and the other a 16MP telephoto lens. The front camera still remains a mystery though.

OnePlus 8 early renders surface ahead of OnePlus 7T launch hinting at punch-hole display, curved screen and more

Like most smartphone manufacturers, OnePlus has been announcing multiple new phones in a year. This year it’s the OnePlus 7 and 7T series of handsets and as one would’ve guessed, we expect the OnePlus 8 series of phones to be announced early next year. While the company recently launched the OnePlus 7T and is expected to announce the OnePlus 7T Pro on October 10, leaked renders of the OnePlus 8 have surfaced online. These super-early renders of the handset are apparently based on detailed schematics disclosed by a company insider, which was obtained by @OnLeaks and was released in collaboration with Cashkaro.

As per the renders, OnePlus might be carrying forward the design it used on the OnePlus 7, but with some notable differences. Unlike the circular camera on the OnePlus 7T, the OnePlus 8 is seen with three vertically stacked rear cameras on the rear. On the front is where most of the cosmetic changes are done as the device sports a punch hole camera on the upper left corner of the display. In contrast, the OnePlus 7 features a waterdrop notch display design while the OnePlus 7 Pro gets a pop-up front camera module. The display of the OnePlus 8 is said to be about 6.5-inch in size and it’s shown to curve along the edges, which is a design quite similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and S10+ handsets.

Alongside the display, design and placement of rear camera module, the report, citing its source, says that OnePlus could finally bring wireless charging on the OnePlus 8. However, there’s no additional info whether it will be fast wireless charging like Huawei's new 27W inductive charging that it debuted with the Mate 30 phones. The OnePlus 8 is said to measure about 160.2 x 72.9 x 8.1mm. Also, note that the leak is all about the OnePlus 8 and not a pro version, which means that the company might be planning to incorporate a pop-up camera in all its forthcoming pro variants. We suggest you take this info with a pinch of salt since it this is an early leak.

PayPal bows out of Facebook-led Libra Association

PayPal, the online payment company, is withdrawing from the Libra Association. The company was a part of the 28-member nonprofit organisation, which was announced by Facebook back in June 2019 when the social media platform announced its cryptocurrency Libra. At the time of the announcement, 27 partners, excluding Facebook, announced that they would participate to oversee the cryptocurrency and its development. Alongside PayPal, the list included technology service providers like Mastercard, Visa, eBay, Coinbase, Stripe, Spotify, Uber, Lyft, and Vodafone. PayPal announcing its withdrawing comes soon after a Wall Street Journal report, which suggested that some companies are considering bowing out of the association.

Facebook’s cryptocurrency is expected to be ready for consumers by 2020 and companies included in the association are more or less crucial to its success. It’s because these firms will also be contributing to the Libra Reserve, which will be an asset pool used for pegging Libra’s value, since it is a stablecoin. “PayPal  has made the decision to forgo further participation in the Libra Association at this time and to continue to focus on advancing our existing mission and business priorities as we strive to democratize access to financial services for underserved populations,” PayPal’s emailed statement to media publications reads. “We remain supportive of Libra’s aspirations and look forward to continued dialogue on ways to work together in the future. Facebook has been a longstanding and valued strategic partner to PayPal, and we will continue to partner with and support Facebook  in various capacities.”

While PayPal’s departure doesn’t necessarily put Libra’s future in uncertainty, there’s bound to be some repercussions. The Head of Policy and Communications for the Libra Association, Dante Disparte retorted to PayPal’s announcement by saying, “It requires a certain boldness and fortitude to take on an endeavor as ambitious as Libra – a generational opportunity to get things right and improve financial inclusion. The journey will be long and challenging. The type of change that will reconfigure the financial system to be tilted towards people, not the institutions serving them, will be hard. Commitment to that mission is more important to us than anything else. We’re better off knowing about this lack of commitment now, rather than later.”

PayPal’s departure comes during the time Facebook’s Libra project is facing harsh criticism from lawmakers who have asked the company to halt its development. Congress and regulators are to review the issue and Facebook executives are being called on to testify before Congress, citing privacy concerns. You can read more about this here.

Google suspends controversial field research program that reportedly targeted black homeless people in Atlanta

Machine Learning systems suffering from AI bias or algorithm bias is a very real thing. The only way to reduce this bias and improve AI is to use good datasets for training it, and back in June 2019, Google confirmed to The Verge that it was doing just that with its ‘field research’ program. Google was upfront about the process, which is a good thing, and said that it is collecting face recognition data “to improve the next generation of facial recognition phone unlocking.” However, the company is shutting down the project after a couple of new reports surfaced claiming that the company is tactfully targeting dark-skinned homeless people with its data collection process.

A New York Daily News report recently claimed that the company’s data collection process for face recognition is targeting people of colour. As per the report, the company’s temps, vendors or contractors (TVCs) being sent out on the field to collect face data were being paid through a third-party employment firm called Randstad, who apparently told the TVCs to target people of colour and use dubious tactics to get the data. What’s even more concerning is that the TVCs were specifically told, by Randstad, to go after black people in Atlanta, including homeless black people, students on college campuses around the US and attendees of the BET Awards festivities in Los Angeles, and people in other areas.

The aforementioned report by the Daily News is said to be based on information received from several people who worked for Google’s face data collection project. These people said that the TVCs were advised to approach a person and not reveal the fact that they are collecting facial data and even lie to obtain as much data as possible. The data collection agents were also told to classify the face scanning process as a “selfie game” similar to Snapchat. One of the informants told the Daily News that these TVCs could also say things like, “Just play with the phone for a couple minutes and get a gift card,” and, “We have a new app, try it and get $5.” A Randstad supervisor reportedly instructed the data collectors to avoid telling the subjects they were being recorded.

While it seems like Randstand, and not Google, had a major role in dubious data collection, the temp hires revealed that they had ID cards that would get them inside Google’s Venice Beach headquarters. A former Randstad employee reveals that a team of data collectors were sent to Atlanta to “specifically” target black people, including homeless black people. “They said to target homeless people because they’re the least likely to say anything to the media,” the ex-employee told the Daily. “The homeless people didn’t know what was going on at all.”  Similarly, the TVCs also targeted college students and you can read the entire Daily News report here.

While Google hired the staffing agency, it’s not clear how much Google’s employees knew about the whole process. Additionally, the ex-staffer says that while a Google manager knew about data collection, he wasn't aware of Randstad's employees instructing TVCs to focus on homeless back people in Atlanta.

Google has suspended the face data collection project and the company is said to be investigating the process after the Daily News article was published. “We’re taking these claims seriously,” the Google spokesperson told NY Times. Atlanta’s city attorney, Nina Hickson also sent a strong-worded letter to the company asking for an explanation. “The possibility that members of our most vulnerable populations are being exploited to advance your company’s commercial interest is profoundly alarming for numerous reasons. If some or all of the reporting was accurate, we would welcome your response as what corrective action has been and will be taken,” the letter addressed to Google’s legal and policy chief Kent Walker reads.
