Airtel Digital TV HD and SD set top box discounted to start at Rs 1,100

Alongside being an internet broadband service, Reliance JioFiber will also enable viewing cable TV at home. Reliance announced the service at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year and ever since, rival companies have come up with their own offerings that go up against Jio’s cable Service. Airtel announced its Xstream service that comprises of fibre internet, app and DTH cable streaming. The company also offers a new Xstream Box and a Chromecast like Xstream Stick, alongside its regular offerings like the HD and SD set-top box. Now, the company has discounted the latter two devices, as per the listing on Airtel’s website.

The Airtel Digital TV HD set-top box was previously priced at Rs 1,800 and now, it is now up for sale priced at Rs 1,300. As for the SD set-top box, the device is now available for Rs 1,100, down. The price drop was first noted by Telecom Talk, who also spotted that there’s no bundled plan with the HD or SD set-top boxes being offered by Airtel and no installation charges are mentioned either. It’s possible that a user might need to purchase a plan separately and pay for installation. The news of Airtel slashing the prices of its HD and SD set-top box comes after Tata Sky did the same back in July ṭhis year. Tata Sky reduced the price of its HD set-top box to Rs 1,499 and its SD set-top box can now be purchased at Rs 1,399.

Alongside broadband and DTH space, competition in the telecom sector is also getting more livelier. Jio recently announced that starting October 10, it will charge 6 paise per minute for voice calls as Interconnect User Charges (IUC). The telco is trying to justify the charges levied by saying that it was paying for IUC charges from its own pockets. You can read more about it here.

Qualcomm adds ISROs NavIC Satellite Navigation System support in upcoming mobile, automotive and IoT platforms

Qualcomm Technologies has announced a partnership with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The company has announced support for India’s Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) and Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) in select chipset platforms across their upcoming portfolio. The new partnership will help accelerate the adoption of NavIC and enhance the geolocation capabilities of mobile, automotive and the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in India.

The solution is built on Qualcomm Technologies’ location-based position technology. Right now, as part of updated platforms, the Qualcomm Location Suite supports up to seven satellite constellations concurrently. It includes the use of all of NavIC’s operating satellites for more accurate location performance, faster time-to-first-fix (TTFF) position acquisition, and improved robustness of location-based services.

The new enhancements are said to enable select mobile, automotive and IoT platforms to better serve key industries and technology ecosystems in India. It is expected to help improve the user experience for location-based applications especially in dense urban environments where geolocation accuracy tends to degrade.

Support for NavIC will be available in select Qualcomm Technologies’ chipset platforms starting in late 2019 and commercial devices with NavIC support are expected to be available during the first half of 2020.

“NavIC is a critical step forward in our pursuit of harnessing space technology for national development and we are eager to make it accessible to everyone for their day to day use. ISRO is very happy to be working with Qualcomm Technologies to enable NavIC on Mobile platforms. Qualcomm Technologies’ leadership and support for NavIC on their mobile platforms will bring the benefits of this indigenous solution to every Indian. ISRO appreciates Qualcomm Technologies for enabling the technology demonstration of NavIC support on mobile platform for the very first time.” said Dr. K Sivan, Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space.

Huawei could resume business with US suppliers but will it get its Android license back

Huawei, which has been banned from sourcing supplies from US firms, could resume business with its US counterparts, according to a report by New York Times. Huawei was placed under a blacklist by the US Commerce Department on the grounds of national security. Because of the ban, Huawei is prohibited from obtaining a license to add Google Play Services to its devices along with Google Core Apps like Search, Maps, Gmail and the likes which reduces the prospects of its products in the international market.

As a result, Huawei had to launch its flagship Mate 30 Series using the open source version of Android and Huawei’s own appstore called App Gallery.

Based on the new report, a meeting was held last week where U.S. President Donald Trump ordered officials to give a green light to a select few US companies to resume supplies to Huawei. The operative keyword is that the goods supplied have to be non-sensitive to national security.

Based on the report, a slew of other publications started conjecturing that this could mean Huawei could be getting its Android license back from Google, allowing the company to install Google Core Services and Play Services in Huawei and it’s sub-brand Honor’s devices.

However, nothing has been officially confirmed by either Google or the U.S. Commerce Department (which issues the license) which maintained that the present “status quo holds.”

iPhone SE 2 to launch in Q1 2020: Report

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Apple could launch the iPhone SE 2 in Q1 2020. The smartphone is expected to have a starting price of $399 (Rs 28,350 approx. directly converted) and will come in two storage variants - 64GB and 128GB. In a research note obtained by MacRumors, Ming-Chi Kuo highlights some of the specifications of the smartphone. He says that the device will be powered by the A13 Bionic CPU, the same which is powering the iPhone 11. The SE 2 will have 3GB LPDDR4X RAM along with two storage options - 64GB and 128GB. The smartphone will be available in three colour options - Space Gray, Silver and Red. The device will not support 3D Touch.

There is still crucial information missing from the leak. For starters, we don't know if the size of the display has increased or will remain the same as the original SE. We also don't have information about the camera setup of the smartphone or the display resolution. According to Mac Rumors, “Kuo expects the new ‌iPhone SE‌ 2 will be a popular upgrade option for existing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S owners.” the iPhone SE had a 4-inch display, which is tiny by today's standards. The iPhone 6 and 6s, both sported a 4.7-inch display. Could this mean that we will see an increase in the size of the iPhone SE display with the SE 2?

When it comes to the current selling iPhones, the iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8-inch display, the 11 has a 6.1-inch display and the 11 Pro Max has a 6.5-inch display. It could be that the iPhone SE 2 caters to those still looking for a small compact smartphone from Apple.

We’d suggest you take this information with a grain of salt as the iPhone SE 2 has been a part of the rumour mill for years now.
