Google Stadia will play games over Wi-Fi only at launch, even on Pixel smartphones

As the launch date for Stadia creeps closer, more details about the game streaming service have emerged. New information tells us that you will need to connect to the internet over Wi-Fi, even on Pixel smartphones to play games. Rick Osterloh, SVP, Devices & Services, Google in an interview on the Vergecast said, “It’s just going to run on Wi-Fi to start.” Google told 9 to 5 Google that the reason for this is because they are “focused on making sure Stadia Founders receive the best possible experience at launch over a WiFi connection”.

Google has said that that a 10Mbps connection is enough to run the game at 720p 60fps. For 1080p gaming at 60fps with 5.1 sound, it recommends a speed of 20Mbps. For 4K gaming at 60fps with 5.1 sound, Google recommends a speed of 35Mbps. Since a stable connection is required to enjoy the games, it makes sense that Google is limiting the service to Wi-Fi at first.

If you plan to use Stadia on your Pixel smartphone, then know that the service will run on the Pixel 2, 2XL, Pixel 3, 3XL, Pixel 3a, 3aXL and the newly launched Pixel 4 and 4XL which aren't coming to India. To run Stadia on the smartphone you will need a Stadia Controller, DualShock 4, Xbox One Controller or any other compatible controller.

If you plan to use the Stadia controller with your smartphone then know that Google has confirmed that gamers will only be able to use the Stadia Controller wirelessly with the Chromecast Ultra. If you plan on using the service on your Pixel smartphone, laptop or PC, you will have to connect the controller using a USB cable. You can read more about the reasoning for a physical connection here.

Apple could be working on a wearable ring, hints patent filing

In the world of wearables, most companies are pushing tech to be smaller, more efficient and better looking. Apple is one of the companies that is pushing wearables to the next level. The company has been delivering big with the Apple Watch series of wearables. In fact, Amazon has even taken the plunge as the company announced two new wearable products at its 2019 product event. These include the Echo Loop which is essentially a smart ring that slips on to your finger.

Not to be outdone, Apple saw this as a challenge and filed a new patent for a wearable electronic ring computing device. Basically, the patent talks about a device that could be used to wirelessly interact with your Mac computers. The device also features a touchscreen and microphone. Obviously, it comes with a processor, wireless transmitter and a bunch of different sensors. It also comes with its own power source. It is expected to have Siri built into the device as well.

Just talking about the sensors, the device comes with haptic actuators to provide force feedback to the user. Motion sensors that will be capable of identifying "a writing motion", as well as a page turning and swiping motion that could be used as a navigational tool for your computer. It will also come with a range of bio-metric sensors that will track your fitness levels.

From what we’ve read, the patent also talks about how you can use the device to unlock another device such as an iPad or iPhone. The device could also come with a screen on which you can mimic an external device’s display on it. But then again, this is just a patent and not an actual realization of the device.

As of now, the patent is among thousands of other patents filed by the company. So, do not get your hopes up too high as this could just be another idea that never makes it past just being an idea.
