Pixel 4s Live HDR+ and Dual Exposure Controls wont be coming to older Pixel devices, Google confirmed

It’s now confirmed that the Google Pixel 4 will not be coming to India. But what’s even more heartbreaking is the fact that the new camera features like Live HDR+ and Dual Exposure Controls won’t be making their way to older Pixel phones either. In a reply to a Tweet, Google has confirmed that these features will remain exclusive to the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL and will not come to older Pixels.

Hi Mahfooz, Dual Exposure Controls and Live HDR+ require low-level capabilities in the hardware that are only available on Pixel 4, so they will not be available on older Pixel devices.

— Made by Google (@madebygoogle) October 21, 2019

The reason Google stated for not bringing the Live HDR+ and Dual Exposure Controls to older Pixels is that they “require low-level capabilities in the hardware that are only available in the Pixel 4.” What Google could be pointing at is the new Neural Core in the phone that enables on-device AI crunching. This is what enables instant replies from Google Assistant, live captions and instant translation, along with the new camera features.

The  Live HDR+ feature allows users to preview the final output (using the HDR+ algorithm) directly in the viewfinder while taking the photo. Earlier, the viewfinder would show the output before HDR+ would be applied, and often there would be a vast difference between what you saw through the viewfinder and what the camera would shoot. The Pixel 4 essentially applies the HDR+ alogrithm in real-time on the viewfinder to help you take a better shot.

The Dual Exposure Controls help users take those tricky silhouette shots. There are two sliders on the Pixel 4’s camera UI, one for the shadows and another for the highlights. You can tweak them to get a silhouette of the object in front even by maintaining the overall brightness of the background.

These two new features will not be coming to the Pixel 3 and as such, users in India won’t be able to use them.

But it’s not all bad news. The new Gcam 7.0 app lets you take long exposure shots of the night sky, enough to bring out galaxies and stars in your low-light photos. It’s another feature that debuted in the Pixel 4 and using the modded camera app, other phones like the older Pixel phones, Poco F1, Redmi K20 Pro, OnePlus devices and the likes can get the feature.

Along with the Astro mode, the Gcam 7.0 app also brings enhanced Night Sight, Motion Blur, Audio Zoom and a transparent UI. Something is better than nothing, and from what we have seen, the Astro Mode on the Pixel 4 can take some brilliant shots, previously unseen on a smartphone.

NASAs InSight is finally beginning to dig deep into the red soil

Ever since its landing on Mars late last year, NASA’s InSight rover has been struggling to dig into the coarse, rocky surface of the Red Planet because of la ack of friction. The rover was supposed to deploy its heat probe, which is also called “the mole”, to dig as deep as 16 metres into the soil to study it. As of last week, the mole had barely penetrated the soil. Luckily, NASA has begun to use a new method that’s showing some positive results. Since October 8, the mole has gone in by about 2 centimetres, which is three quarters of an inch.

According to an update published recently by NASA, the agency is now employing a new method to drive the mole in. Called pinning, the new technique involves using the scoop of the rover’s robotic arm to press the mole. This apparently gives the mole the friction needed to bury itself in the soil and continue digging. NASA reports that since October 8, the mole has hammered 220 times over three separate occasions. Images taken of the mole since then show progress.

“The mole still has a way to go, but we're all thrilled to see it digging again,” says Troy Hudson of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who is key to the success seen in the last few days. According to NASA, the new technique had to be tested extensively on Earth before it could be employed on InSight. The mole is now expected to continue digging. If it stops again, NASA might throw some soil on top of the mole to add more mass to it. This way, the mole won’t suffer from its own recoil so much the next time it hammers.

NASA launched InSight from Earth on May 5 last year. On the Red Planet, the stationary rover is expected to dig into the soil to understand the planet’s evolutionary history. With the help of the mole, InSight is expected to relay information about the size, thickness, density, and overall structure of Mars’ core, mantle, and crust. With the new technique that NASA has now begun to employ, the mole’s rate of penetration is expected to go up.

OnePlus 7 and 7T Pro update brings better low light selfie performance along with bug fixes

A new update has gone live for the OnePlus 7T and the 7T Pro. To check for the update simply go to Settings, then System and System updates.  The update version is OxygenOS 10.0.4 for the OnePlus 7T and Oxygen OS 10.0.3 for the OnePlus 7T Pro. There are two big changes that come with the update. The first is better low light photography from the front-facing camera. The second is the addition of Cloud Service for the Gallery. This feature is for India only. With the cloud service, OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro users will be able to back up their photos to the cloud, similar to what we have seen with the Google Photos app.

All the changes coming with the update are as follows

System Optimized translation accuracy Optimized overall communication (network, phone calls, mobile data) performance General bug fixes and improvements Added Cloud Service for Gallery (India only) Camera Optimized quality of the front camera for better pictures at night

We recently compared the gaming performance of the OnePlus 7T Pro to other flagship smartphones like the ROG Phone 2 and the Black Sark 2. In our comparison, we concluded that with gaming, the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren does have an edge over the regular OnePlus 7T Pro. The closest competitor to the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren addition comes in the form of the Asus ROG Phone II. The ROG Phone 2 comes close and in some cases even beats the OnePlus with higher stability and framerates. The Black Shark looks to be losing its teeth and shows signs of ageing when compared to the others on this list and barely manages to keep up with the OP7T Pro. The question to ask is whether there’s enough to consider the McLaren Edition over the regular OnePlus 7T Pro. For gaming, we have seen the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition with 12GB RAM show higher frame rates and stability when compared to the regular OnePlus 7T Pro. But this difference isn't big enough to warrant an upgrade. You can check out the comparison in detail here.

Moto E6 Play may join Motorolas budget phone family soon

Motorola recently introduced a new budget device, the Moto E6s in India. The phone was first showcased at IFA 2019 and made its way to India last month. Now, renders of alleged Moto E6 Play have appeared online. According to the renders, Moto E6 Play could be made available in two colour variants, blue and black. The latest pictures reveal that the upcoming Motorola budget device will have a single rear camera setup alongside a rear panel-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Motorola Moto E6 Play is likely to come equipped with a capacitive touchscreen. It could come with an aspect ratio of 18:9 or 16:9. The renders show a conventional Motorola design with bezels on three sides and a thick chin. This is hardly surprising considering that the Moto E6 Play is expected to be a budget device. Further, all three buttons appear to be positioned on the right side of the device. The bottom edge seems to support a micro-USB port, while the top edge houses the 3.5mm headphone jack.

According to the renders, Moto E6 Play will not sport a notch, but a traditional mobile phone design with a front camera placed within the top bezel. As for the rear panel, it is likely to be made of plastic as the material is the go-to choice for budget smartphones. The Motorola Moto E6 Play will presumably run Android 9 Pie out of the box. There is no official information about the specifications of the handset just yet.

The Motorola Moto E6 Play may be announced along with the Moto G8 series that is expected to be revealed on October 24 in Brazil. Moto G8 Plus is expected to come equipped with a triple rear camera setup as well as a small notch on the top, accompanied by a noticeable chin at the bottom. You can read more about it here.

Microsoft Xbox Scarlett will not compromise on frame rates: Microsoft

Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Xbox Scarlett will be able to play games at 4K. The company has also said that games will be able to run at 120 frames per second. It should be noted that games will either run at 4K or at a lower resolution at 120 frames per second. It is not possible for games to run at 4k and 120 frames per second. The top of the line GPU today, the NVIDIA RTX 2080Ti cannot achieve this with a state of the art PC, so it is highly unlikely that a console will be able to run games at 4K 120fps. But considering the hardware powering the Xbox Scarlett console, it is possible for it to achieve 4K gaming or high frame rate gaming.

In conversation with Xbox Official Magazine, Microsoft says, “But, with the next-gen, I think you’ll see a big upgrade in CPU because we really want to make sure that you don’t have any compromises with the framerates. Yes, we can do 4K, but we can also do 120 frames per second. So I think that type of capability will be something that people don’t see today.”

The biggest upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett will be the CPU. The new consoles will run on the AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU and Navi GPU with hardware-enabled Ray Tracing. In the past, Microsoft did say that the new console is 4 times more powerful than the Xbox One X (read our review here). Microsoft has also confirmed that the new console will use SSD storage and come with GDDR6 memory. Sony has also confirmed SSD storage for the PS5.

One of the key highlights for Microsoft has been backwards compatibility and for the upcoming consoles, it looks like both Sony and Microsoft are looking at enabling backwards compatibility on their respective consoles.

Details of the look of the Xbox Scarlett are not known but recently leaked images have shown us the look of the PS5 dev kit. This shouldn't be mistaken as the final unit as Sony has a history of making the dev kits look different from the final unit. In the case of the PS4, the dev kit was underpowered when compared to the launched PS4 so it is possible that some features, specs and abilities of the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett could change before launch.
