Most Jio users must be aware by now that voice calling users on other networks is no longer free and they will be charged 6 paise per minute. The decision by the company was bound to draw the ire of its users but Jio recently announced some new All-In-One plans that are said to be value for money offerings. These plans are priced at Rs 222, Rs 333 and Rs 444 and are valid for one, two and three months respectively. While we have detailed everything about these plans in our previous story, here, we will compare these new Jio plans with similarly priced prepaid packs by Airtel and Vodafone-Idea.

Jio Rs 222 All-In-One Plan vs Airtel Rs 249 pack vs Vodafone Idea’s Rs 229 plan

The Jio Rs 222 All-In-One prepaid recharge offers 2GB data per day and it comes with a 28 day validity. Jio to Jio calls are unrestricted but one will get 1000 minutes for calling users on other networks, along with 100 daily free SMS and access to Jio’s apps. However, neither of them are similar to Jio’s offering, both in terms of validity and pricing. The two plans by Airtel come with 2GB daily data but they are valid for 28 days and 82 days respectively. The aforementioned benefits with Airtel are still available, along with free 100 SMS per day.

Coming to Vodafone, the telco offers a plan priced at Rs 458, which comes with 84 days validity and credits 1.5GB data per day. Scientists have managed to stop aging in mice using extra-long telomeres

The holy grail of medicine has always been the lengthening of the human lifespan. From miracle cures to lotions and creams that make you look younger, the quest to reverse again has been a major goal for humanity. Well, there’s some good news on that front as a team of scientists and researchers from the Spanish National Cancer Research Center have managed to prolong and extend the normal lifespan of lab mice by a whooping 12 percent. This was achieved by cultivating embryonic cells in a very precise way in order to facilitate the process. There was no genetic modification involved in this entire process.

This is all thanks to what researchers are terming very long telomeres. Just a refresher, telomeres are repeating sequences of DNA that are found on the tips of all chromosomes in our bodies. These telomeres also get shorter every time our DNA replicates during cell division. Telomeres are a sort of buffer that protect genetic material in our chromosomes. As we get older, our telomeres get shorter, thus getting weaker. Scientists have tried for decades to keep these telomeres stronger for as long as possible.

The researchers performed an experiment where they left a bunch of stem cells in a petri dish. These stem cells them began multiplying leading to unusually long telomeres. The mice that were bred with these telomeres showed a ‘significant increase of 12.7 percent in median longevity’. The findings from this study have been published in Nature Communications journal. In the experiment, researchers also noticed that the mice bred with the long telomeres were also at less risk of developing age-related tumors.

To be fair, this is only possible on mice right now, so don’t get your hopes too high. It’s going to be a while before this trickles down to humans. But, on the bright side, this gives us a window into the processes of aging and how we could, in the future, reverse or even eliminate it completely.

Twitter to release a new OLED-friendly Lights Out dark mode for Android

Twitter first introduced dark mode on the Android app way back in 2016. Since then, there have been no major updates in the colour contrast of the app. However, VP of Design and Research at Twitter revealed in July this year that Twitter is working on a new ‘Lights out mode’ for Android and that it will ship by mid-September. Now, the new dark mode has been spotted on the alpha version of the Twitter Android app. It is basically like Instagram’s take on dark mode.

Spotted by AndroidPolice, the new Lights Out mode contains a third element under the display head. The new element lets users pick the dark mode appearance between two options - dim and lights out. While ‘dim’ refers to Twitter’s existing dark mode in the stable app, the ‘lights out’ mode is new. Lights out mode lets users switch the interface to a true-black tone. It is likely to help curb power consumption on phones with OLED displays.

The Lights out mode was first announced in March. Despite that, the new dark mode is still limited to Twitter’s alpha app for Android. It is available to a small group of people, invite-only group of testers. It is still left to come to the beta version before rolling out to the stable version.

As of now, Light Out mode is showing up in version 8.19.0 of the alpha version of Twitter’s Android app. The version is not yet available on APK Mirror. If you want, you can request to join the alpha, which is invite-only here.

Apple iPhone XR now assembled in India, available for Rs 49,990

Given the on-going trade-war between the U.S. and China, many American companies have been trying to move some (or all) of their manufacturing out of China. Apple too has been working on moving some production to India, with both Winstron and Foxconn setting up plants in the country. Now, it appears that Apple has started assembling the iPhone XR (Review) in India.

Retail stores such Chroma seem to be selling the Apple iPhone XR with an “assembled in India” tag on the box, and a printed retail price of Rs 49,900 for the 64GB variant. The iPhone XR launched in India last year with a price tag of Rs 76,900. Apple has been aggressively trying to increase its market share in the second biggest smartphone market in the world, but pricing continues to be the challenge. Reuters had reported earlier this year that Apple would start manufacturing their flagship phones in India. However, assembling iPhones has been traditionally expected to bring the India price down, which in reality, could potentially not be the case. It is important to note that phones that are assembled in India, are not actually manufactured here. What this means is that Foxconn and Winstrom still continue to import all the parts necessary to put together the iPhone which attracts duty as well.

It should be noted that  when Apple announced the iPhone 11 this year, the price of the iPhone XR was dropped to $749 from the original launch price of $599. The drop in price of the iPhone XR in India is very much in-line with this, going from Rs 76,990 at launch to Rs 49,990 now.

Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple iPhone SE 2 to come with new LCP-based antenna for improved cellular connectivity

Rumours of Apple working on a successor to one of its best selling iPhones, the iPhone SE, have been making the rounds on the internet for a few years now. While the company has time and again not announced the device, fresh rumours of the alleged iPhone SE 2 keep popping up. Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has been releasing some information about the device from some time now and ášhe latest news is that the phone will sport an updated antenna setup for better connectivity. AppleInsider claims to have received the information via a research note to investors.

While the report doesn’t directly say what new antenna technology the phone will come equipped with, it hints at an LCP-based antenna. Apple’s supplier Murata is said to provide the antenna components to the company in early 2020 for the rumoured iPhone SE 2. The new antenna is said to deliver gains of up to 5.1 decibels and can fit within a flexible package, which might help with the device’s manufacturing. The LCP is a low-cost organic flexible substrate, which apparently behaves quite consistently and is said to have low loss.

Kuo reiterates Q1 2020 as the possible time frame for the launch of the Apple iPhone SE 2. While no additional details about the rumoured handset were shared this time around, previous reports have given us a fair idea of what to expect. The smartphone might be launched running on Apple A13 SoC, which could be coupled with 3GB RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. It is rumoured to be 5G compatible and could be priced starting at $399 (Rs 28,275).

A previous report also hinted that Apple might be preparing to launch four iPhone 12 phones next year. All of these handsets are said to be 5G compatible. Apple finally incorporated a third sensor to its iPhone lineup with the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the report suggests that it might add a ToF sensor on next year’s devices.
