What Googles quantum supremacy claim means for you
Google announced yesterday that it had made something of a breakthrough in the field of quantum computing by achieving a much-coveted state of computing called ‘quantum supremacy’. IBM, which is also an active participant in the race to make powerful quantum computing systems, refuted Google’s claim in a blog post earlier today. With giants such as Google and IBM warring to achieve meta-supercomputer performance, let’s try and understand what quantum computing is, and what Google’s latest claim means for us all.
What is quantum computing?Quantum computing is a type of computing that works on the principles of quantum theory, which talks about the nature and behaviour of energy and matter on an atomic and subatomic level. This type of computing is by no means new. Scientists have been trying to build quantum computers since the early 1980s. Because it involves atoms in different states, quantum computing is not the same as classical computing, what we find in our PCs, smartphones, tablets, etc.
Classical computing involves carrying out logical operations using just two states: 0 and 1—or—on and off (aka binary number). The basic unit of classical computing is bit, and it can be represented either as 0 or 1 at any given time. With quantum computing though, the basic unit is qubit (quantum bit). Instead of using just two states, it uses four. That means a qubit can be 0 and 1 at the same time. An increase in qubits can increase the computational power of the system that uses it exponentially.
If you’re still not getting the picture, imagine the whistle your PE teacher used to use in school. If blowing the whistle is 1, and not blowing it is 0 in classical computing, then the entire whistle becomes a flute in quantum computing. Instead of the single air hole at the top of a whistle, you end up with numerous finger holes, each of which can be covered or opened individually at the same time to create a tune. And more such flutes playing together means higher computational power.
Google’s quantum supremacy claimPublishing a paper in the scientific journal Nature, Google announced yesterday that its new 54-qubit quantum processor called Sycamore had succeeded in completing Google’s target computation in 200 seconds. The maker of the popular Pixel smartphones went on to say that the same target computation would take “the world’s fastest supercomputer 10,000 years to produce a similar output.” Just so we’re clear, the fastest supercomputer as of today is Summit (OLCF-4), which is developed by IBM.
In its recently published paper, Google claimed that this specific experiment allowed its Sycamore quantum processor to achieve quantum supremacy, a term proposed by American theoretical physicist John Preskill of Caltech back in 2012 to refer to the point at which quantum computers can do things that classical computers can’t. “This moment represents a distinct milestone in our effort to harness the principles of quantum mechanics to solve computational problems,” wrote Google CEO Sundar Pichai in his blog post.
IBM’s responseIBM responded to this claim earlier this morning in a blog post, saying that Google had not used the right parameters on its classical computing simulation to arrive at that pessimistic figure of 10,000 years. “We argue that an ideal simulation of the same task can be performed on a classical system in 2.5 days and with far greater fidelity. This is in fact a conservative, worst-case estimate, and we expect that with additional refinements the classical cost of the simulation can be further reduced,” wrote Edwin Pednault, John Gunnels, and Jay Gambetta from IBM Research.
Citing Preskill from a recent article in Quanta Magazine to explain how the term quantum supremacy is overhyped in reporting, the three IBMers wrote, “A headline that includes some variation of “Quantum Supremacy Achieved” is almost irresistible to print, but it will inevitably mislead the general public. First because, as we argue above, by its strictest definition the goal has not been met. But more fundamentally, because quantum computers will never reign “supreme” over classical computers, but will rather work in concert with them, since each have their unique strengths.”
What this means for youDuring the closed-door media presentation that we at Digit.in were invited to earlier this morning, Google explained that its new Sycamore processor could find a variety of valuable applications in the near future, including the design of new materials. According to Google, its high computational power could help speed up the design of more eco-friendly plastics for water bottles, lightweight batteries for electric cars, and catalysts that can produce agricultural fertiliser more efficiently, including Haber’s process for the industrial production of ammonia.
While it’s hard to buy Google’s claim of having achieved quantum supremacy through its recent experiment at face value, especially after reading IBM’s thought-provoking rebuttal, it’s easy to see that Google has invested an immense amount of effort and money in making quantum computing work towards solving large problems. Though you obviously won’t see Google plonking a Sycamore quantum processor in its next Pixel device, you can expect to see the Californian giant taking on bigger experiments with its 54-qubit chip.

PUBG Mobile finally gets Payload Mode Adds a bunch of new weapons and a helicopter
It looks like PUBG Mobile is here to stay. Even though Call of Duty: Mobile has taken the world by storm, it just goes to show the staying power of PUBG: Mobile as the premier mobile shooter. With regular updates that really extend the life of the game, PUBG Mobile has captured the attention of gamers in India for a while now. There were rumors floating around that PUBG Mobile was getting a new update called Payload Mode which was supposed to allow players to indulge in air-to-air battles. Essentially, this update offers a bunch of updates such as helicopters and even rocket launchers to help you take to the skies and fight your battles from high up. Remember that opponents on ground level can still shoot you down with powerful enough weaponry.
The update last week was supposed to come with Payload Mode but the feature is finally here. You can try out the mode under the Arcade tab. Just a brief roundup of what Payload mode is all about. SO, you’ll be dropped off at Erangel but you’ll have access to better loot such as grenade launchers, special guns and rocket launchers to help you combat the might of helicopters. You will also be able to use helicopters as in-game weapons with the right strategy.
Another cool update included in Payload mode are the Super Weapon Boxes. These boxes function exactly as they’re advertised. Basically, these Boxes will be marked on the map with special beacons and will contain some of the best and rarest weapons in the game. You will also be able to revive your teammates once they’ve been eliminated. When a player is eliminated, he or she will leave behind a tag of sorts, this tag needs to be collected within 120 seconds and brought to the nearest communications tower. This will essentially respawn your teammate straight back into the match. This adds another layer of strategy to the popular mobile game.
If you want to access this mode, you’ll need to head to the Arcade tab to access the mode. You may need to download a few additional files if you haven’t installed the 0.15.0 update.

Government planning to revive BSNL and MTNL with a Rs 15,000 crore merger: Report
BSNL and MTNL have been struggling to generate revenue for more than a decade now and it worsened with the entry of Jio. Hence, the government is planning to revive the state-run telcos. According to a report from IANS, the revival plan will cost approximately Rs 74,000 crore of which Rs 22,000 would be used for acquiring 4G spectrum and for the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS). The Union Cabinet has approved the 4G spectrum allocation to merge BSNL and MTNL while allowing them to raise sovereign bonds of Rs. 15,000 crores for their revival.
As of now, MTNL operates in Mumbai and Delhi, whereas BSNL operates in rest of India. The estimated loss for BSNL in 2019 is Rs 14,000 crores. While MTNL is listed, it has its net worth already eroded. The current employee count of BSNL is around 1,63,500, whereas MTNL has around 20,000 employees. The PSU’s merger has been a point of discussion for over 10 years now, but it couldn’t be taken up due to HR and listing issues.
After the cabinet briefing, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “BSNL & MTNL will raise a sovereign bond of Rs. 15,000 crores for their revival and assets of both the PSUs worth Rs. 38,000 crores will be monetised. The cabinet also approved an attractive VRS package for the employees which has been slightly tweaked from the original Gujarat model. Government will provide 4G spectrum on an administrative allocation basis. The cabinet has also given in-principle nod to the merger of BSNL and MTNL and till modalities are in place, MTNL will be a subsidiary of BSNL."
The revival plan will help BSNL to compete with private telecom companies in a better way. The telcos will receive the revival package in another month or so.

Did Realme accidentally start serving ads on ColorOS 60 Turns out, its not the only one
After gunning for Xiaomi’s throat for serving ads in its budget smartphones, Realme is now reportedly pushing ads in the Realme 1 after the new ColorOS update. A few users took to Twitter soon after the update was pushed out to complain about ads in their UI, in a way that’s similar to how Xiaomi also shows ads. Later, Realme CMO India, Francis Wong tweeted it was an error on their part and withdrew the feature from the devices.
Hey @C4ETech @C4EAsh @sharmajitech @RedmiIndia Device: Realme 1, beta firmware.. so they told they don't sell ads in the launch event but the question is untill when?? pic.twitter.com/sDUrAlimTM
— Supratim Dey (@Supratim96) October 23, 2019Ads were popping up on ColorOS version CPH1861EX_11_C.45 that was pushed out with the latest October 2019 security patch. The ads are showing up in system apps like the download manager, and even as pop-ups on the home screen. The update added an option to ‘Get Reccommendations’ in the Settings App, which now have been taken down.
Users also reported the Realme U1 receiving ads on the UI after the latest RMX1831EX_11_C.15 update, but we could not independently confirm it since there were no screenshots of the same shared by users.
To clear the confusion, there is no ads. A system error from a beta software version. That's it.
— Francis Wang (@FrancisRealme) October 23, 2019After users started complaining about ads in their smartphones, CMO of Realme India, Francis Wong first claimed it was showing up only on the beta version of the update. But after people claimed it’s on the stable version, Wong replied it’s a “system error from a beta software version.” Did an unwanted beta feature accidentally make its way to the stable version? More importantly, if it was indeed in the beta version, was Realme testing ads in their UI and planning for a wider rollout in the future? Let’s hope not.
Realme has consistently promised its fast-growing user base it will never show ads in the UI, something that the company likes to point out about Redmi smartphones from time to time.
The new update for the Realme 1 introduces system-wide dark mode, the October 2019 security patch, changes in the quick settings option, app cloning support and Digital Wellbeing support that Google has now made mandatory for all OEMs to offer in their smartphones.
Realme and Xiaomi not the only oneGuys vivo is also showing ads@stufflistings @AndroidSaint @Vivo_India pic.twitter.com/i9k3h6zQKB

Color os is also showing ads in notification from colors os pre installed app called app market on my realme 3 pro. @realmemobiles @geekyranjit @MadhavSheth1 pic.twitter.com/yNZpreySam
— Ayan Basu (@AyanBsu) August 25, 2019While most of the backlash is aimed towards Xiaomi for admitting to pushing ads in MIUI as part of their revenue stream, they’re not the only one throwing ads on the face of users. Samsung has been showing ads through the lock screen for quite some time, especially in its budget M-series and A-series smartphones, as part of a tie-up with ‘Glance’, a content platform that specialises in showing customised content to users. Vivo and Oppo phones also do the same through other third-party content providers. Furthermore, most of the Chinese OEMs throw up ads in the notification center, so much so, that it often becomes difficult to find out the notification that you were looking for in the first place.
So is it fair to demand only Xiaomi to withdraw apps from its UI while the rest of the smartphone brands are left alone in their quest to make a quick buck through invasive ads that depend on your smartphone usage to tailor the ads the system thinks is useful for you?
