OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro may launch in Q2 2020

While renders of the next OnePlus flagship smartphones, namely the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro have been circulating on the internet, we now have a leaked launch date of the two smartphones. According to the latest rumours, OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are expected to launch in Q2 2020.

The latest development comes in the form of a tweet from Tipster Max J who has claimed that both the phones will launch in the second quarter of next year. The time coincides with the usual launch timeline of OnePlus phones. OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro were launched in May this year.

Earlier, @OnLeaks posted images of OnePlus 8 Pro. The alleged renders showed a design change seems to be in ášhe works for OnePlus’ next year flagship. The key change in design is the presence of a punch-hole display and quad rear camera setup. If this turns out to be true, OnePlus 8 Pro will be the company’s first phone with a quad-camera setup.

Renders of both OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro showcase a punch-hole display design, along with a screen that curves along both the vertical edges. According to the rumours, OnePlus 8 Pro might sport a 6.65-inch display, which is slightly bigger than the 6.5-inch panel touted to be equipped on the OnePlus 8. The 90Hz refresh rate on the display is already confirmed as OnePlus has announced its new and upcoming phones will come with the stated higher refresh rate.

As for the optics, OnePlus 8 Pro is expected to have four cameras are housed together in a single module. There could be a 3D ToF sensor, along with an LED flash. From the renders, the power button and the alert slider can be seen on the right edge of the handset, while the volume buttons are on the device’s left edge.

How Microsoft has quietly started automating driving tests in India using AI

Let’s face it: the process of acquiring a licence to drive in India is as easy as walking up to the nearest convenience store and asking for a pack of Lay’s. This is in part due to unfair, ineffective, non-standardised driving tests, negligence in execution, and corrupt government officials. Well, Microsoft Research India believes it has the solution to at least one of those problems. In a recent announcement, Microsoft demonstrated the use of its new smartphone-based driving test system, HAMS, in the real world.

Called HAMS (Harnessing AutoMobiles for Safety), Microsoft’s new invention uses proprietary software on an off-the-shelf low-cost mobile phone along with a proprietary edge cloud architecture to deliver an accurate automated driving test. The first state transport authority to deploy Microsoft’s HAMS is the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand. Microsoft says its system employs deep learning models along with traditional computer vision techniques.

As you can see in Microsoft’s recent video, the way it works is that the Android smartphone running the HAMS app is fitted to the windscreen of the test car in such a way that the device’s rear camera gets an outside view and the front camera gets a view of the candidate. The device uses its cameras and internal sensors to collect driving data of the candidate during the test and then relays it to the HAMS digital dashboard in the RTO. The driving test, which involves the candidate performing various types of manoeuvres on a test track to prove their driving skills, is fully automated. The report gathered from the dashboard tells the candidate if they’re qualified to drive on the roads.

“The key to the operation of HAMS is the use of multiple sensors simultaneously. For example, when a sharp braking event is detected (using the smartphone’s accelerometer), the distance to the vehicle in front is checked (using the rear camera), along with indications of driver distraction or fatigue (using the front camera). Such sensing and detection in tandem helps provide a holistic and accurate picture of how the vehicle is being driven, enabling appropriate feedback to then be generated,” writes Microsoft Research India in its blog post on HAMS.

Microsoft is also exploring areas of use for its HAMS system outside automated driving tests, such as fleet management. The Redmond-based company says it recently piloted the system in the context of driver training by collaborating with the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR), which is run by Maruti Suzuki. The company’s collaboration with the Transport Department, Government of Uttarakhand and IDTR to deploy HAMS at the RTO, Dehradun is the most recent and perhaps most significant accomplishment in the HAMS project lifecycle so far. “The success of HAMS at the Dehradun RTO augurs well for its wider adoption, within the country and beyond, to ensure well-tested drivers enable better and safer roads everywhere,” adds Microsoft.

In the report of a survey conducted by SaveLIFE Foundation some two years ago, 59 per cent of the participants said they had not taken a driving test to get their driving licence. This finding does not come as a surprise as obtaining a driving licence in India is generally considered a dishonest and unfair transaction involving bribery. Just how far Microsoft Research India’s new automated driving test system will go in making the entire process less corrupt and more convenient is something we will have to wait and see.

Airtel to gradually phase out data rollover for broadband users, postpaid users to still get the benefit

Competition in the telecom sector has been gradually increasing ever since Reliance Jio commenced its commercial operations. Rival telcos such as Airtel and Vodafone-Idea had to revamp their entire offering lineup to keep up and retain their subscriber base. Airtel has again made some changes to the benefits it offers to its broadband customers but unfortunately, its users might not like it. Airtel will be gradually phasing out the data rollover facility it offers to its broadband users. We confirmed with Airtel about this development and were told that this change will gradually come into effect for all of its broadband users.

Since this a gradual change, this means that any data left in an Airtel broadband users’ data bank won’t be wiped out. They will be able to use it till it is depleted, however, no additional data will be added over their existing data since the rollover option is no longer available. For example, let's assume you have a total of 1000GB data left in your Airtel Broadband account. It will be rolled over until it’s exhausted and if you use up 500 GB next month, the remaining 500GB will still be available next month. The rollover option is still available for postpaid mobile Airtel subscribers and it should be noted that the option was never available for the telcos’ prepaid users.

This new change by Airtel is bound to draw the irk of users who are counting on data rollover to supplement their monthly data cap. Many users have started complaining since Airtel didn’t make any announcements about the change and abruptly ended the data rollover facility. This comes soon after Airtel announced its new XStream service, which consists of fiber to the home, online media streaming, DTH television and more. The company might be planning to either introduce the rollover facility on its Xstream plans or do something similar, however, this is purely speculation on our part.
