Apex Legends for mobile could be released by 2021, crosses 70 million player mark

Apex Legends is a relatively new entrant to the whole Battle Royale gaming space. However, EA and Respawn Entertainment worked hard in integrating notable gameplay and setting, which helped it gain 50 million users in one month after launch. The game’s developers initially said they had no plans of bringing the title to mobile games and it will remain limited to PC, PS and Xbox. Later, it seems like the companies realised the potential in mobile gaming and in May this year, it confirmed that Apex Legends will be released for mobile as well. Now, in its Q2 2020 earnings call, Andrew Wilson, the Chief Executive Officer of EA said, “We're expanding our Apex Legends team deliver our content plans for FY '21 and will reach new audiences through mobile and across Asia.”

While there is still no concrete date for when the mobile version of Apex Legends will be announced, we now at least have a time frame of when to expect it. In addition to the probable launch timeline, the company also revealed that there are over 70 million players of the first-person shooter battle royale title. “We're expanding our Apex Legends team deliver our content plans for FY '21 and will reach new audiences through mobile and across Asia...Mobile growth will be driven by the ramp of our new Plants Versus Zombies title, sports on mobile, including FIFA Mobile in Asia and Apex Legends, offset by aging titles elsewhere in our portfolio,” says EA.

We aren’t too sure how well Apex Legends will be received on mobile phones since PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile and Fortnite already have made a space for themselves. However, there’s quite a high possibility that by the time Apex is out on smartphones, people might be looking for something new and unique in terms of gameplay, which the title does deliver. In other Apex Legends news, developers of the game have launched a limited time duos game mode for the first time. As the name suggests, players will be able to team up in pairs of two to take on rivals and this limited-time event will be available to play from November 5.

Apple AirPods deemed unrepairable as per iFixit teardown

Apple released the AirPod Pro a few days ago, while not unexpected, rather suddenly. While the new wireless earphones by Apple are yet to be available in India, customers abroad have already started getting their hands on the newest buds from Apple that feature ANC. iFixit too managed to get a pair of the new AirPod Pro into their labs and systematically took the buds apart.

As per iFixit’s teardown, the AirPod Pro is borderline unrepairable and completely uneconomical to repair. Apparently, all parts of the AirPod Pro are glued together, and taking them apart is most likely to cause damage to the parts it has been glued to. Interestingly, the AirPod Pro does use a button style battery which technically, is replaceable, but in doing so, you’re very likely to damage many other parts.

This shouldn’t really come as a surprise, given that the AirPods themselves followed a similar construction. In fact, over the last few product cycles, Apple has been making their products less and less repairable. MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models now come with a T2 chip which disables the machine in case a component is replaced by a non-Apple authorized party.

Long story short, if you do decide to buy the new AirPod Pro, you’re going to have to be very careful to not break them, since repairs are out of the question and a new pair will cost you Rs 24,900. Of course, you could get Apple Care, in which case, the replacement will be slightly cheaper, but at the end of the day, its just easier to take good care of the buds than get into repairs and replacement.

Realme X October 2019 patch with dark mode postponed due to a critical bug

Realme recently started rolling out the new October 2019 security patch for its Realme X smartphone. Along with the October 2019 security patch, the new update brings a host of other features like dark mode, option for notification dots for updates, improved touch experience while gaming and more. However, the company has postponed rolling out of the update before it hit more devices since its developers have found a critical bug in the device. As per a Realme post, the patch rollout will be resumed when the critical bug is fixed. It’s not clear what the bug is since there are no details about it.

To recall, the October 2019 update for the Realme X brings new features for the handset. The system changes include updated charging animation and new font feature for the theme store. In settings, Realme Laboratory option is added, along with the aforementioned Dark Mode, option for notification dots for updates, along with the option to quickly enter hidden apps list via fingerprint. The touch experience on the phone while gaming should also be improved after the update and there are some notification and status bar updates like removal of a reminder after hotspot is enabled, prompt removal after rooting the handset and more.

This is not the first time a smartphone company had to suspend a software rollout. OnePlus previously suspended, and later resumed, the Android 10 based OxygenOS 10 update rollout for its OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro handsets. When the update was first rolled out, several users complained of multiple bugs in the system, which were introduced after the new update was applied. Since Realme has paused the software rollout soon after it commenced, chances are that the majority of Realme X users might have yet to receive the update. In case you have received the update, we suggest not downloading it and waiting for the revised update to be made available for your handset.

WhatsApp for Android finally receives Fingerprint lock feature in stable version

Android users can finally stop using third-party lock apps to secure their personal messages because WhatsApp is finally rolling out the much-awaited Fingerprint lock feature in the app’s latest stable version. The new feature, which has been available for public testing in the beta version of WhatsApp since August this year, will allow Android users to unlock their WhatsApp app with their registered fingerprint in the same way they unlock their phone’s screen lock.

WhatsApp made the feature announcement quietly in the form of a blog post on its website. In the short post, the Facebook-owned messaging company isn’t talking about updating the app to a specific build to get the feature, so that must mean the feature is activated remotely from WhatsApp servers. If you aren’t seeing it appear in Settings just yet, you should, in the next few days. As long as you have the latest version of the popular messaging app installed and a fingerprint scanner on your phone, you should see the option appear soon enough.

“To enable it [the new fingerprint unlock feature], tap Settings > Account > Privacy > Fingerprint lock. Turn on Unlock with fingerprint, and confirm your fingerprint,” writes WhatsApp in its blog post. After that, every time you tap the WhatsApp icon you’ll be prompted for your fingerprint, just like the screen lock on your phone. If you want to delay the automatic locking of the app, you can set a delay interval of either one or thirty minutes in the same Fingerprint lock section in WhatsApp Settings.

WhatsApp for iOS received support for Touch ID and Face ID on Apple devices early in the year but was plagued by a nasty bypass bug soon after. You can read more about that incident here. Sometime in late March, we began spotting beta builds of WhatsApp for Android crop up with support for Fingerprint lock. Roughly half a year later, the feature has made it to the stable version of the popular messaging app. In related news, WhatsApp is developing a multi-login feature that will allow users to use multiple accounts in the same app. You can read more about that here.
