LG 2019 OLED TVs start receiving NVIDIA G-Sync update, heres how you can enable it

If you are a PC gamer looking to exploit G-Sync on your 2019 LG OLED TV, then there is some good news for you. LG’s 2019 OLED TVs, E9 (65 and 55 inches), C9 (77, 65 and 55 inches) as well as B9 (65 and 55 inches) will receive the update. According to LG, the update will come to North America followed by markets in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, etc. before the end of the year.

With G-Sync support, gamers can experience a smooth, flicker, tearing or stutter free gaming experience on the TV. To be able to exploit G-SYNC you need to have a GeForce RTX 20-Series or GTX 16-Series GPUs.

“As the first TVs to offer NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible support in the industry, LG is once again demonstrating its commitment to delivering the most advanced gaming experience,” said Sam Kim, senior vice president of the TV product planning division of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “Our partnership with NVIDIA, the world’s premiere gaming hardware brand, is helping our 2019 OLED TVs set a new standard in gaming performance.”

Users of the TV can go into the settings and check if the software update is available. The software version is 04.70.12 for the C9 and E9 models, and version 04.70.04 for the B9 models. On the graphics front, users will need to install the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver via GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA website.

HOW TO ENABLE G-SYNC ON THE TV AND PC Once your TV and GPU are updated, connect the TV to your PC or laptop via an HDMI cable.  Open the NVIDIA Control Panel. You can do this by right-clicking your desktop, then click NVIDIA Control Panel On the left of the window, select Display and then Set up G-SYNC Enable G-SYNC, and click Apply. You are almost done. Select the LG TV under the Display settings and change the resolution based on the capabilities of your GPU. You can choose between 2560x1440 @ 120Hz for a 40 to 120Hz Variable Refresh Rate range or 3840x2160 @ 60Hz for a 40-60Hz Variable Refresh Rate range. You can also enable Ultra HD Deep Color mode on the LG TV. Do this by going into the settings of the TV, then Picture Settings, Additional Settings, find the HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color toggle and switch it on.  To enable HDR, open “Windows HD Color Settings” on your PC/Laptop. Here switch on “Play HDR Games and Apps”.

One thing to note is that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) was announced as a function of HDMI 2.1, so how can HDMI 2.0 devices, like the NVIDIA graphics cards, take advantage of this? Well, if you aren't aware, the Xbox One X also takes advantage of VRR on the LG 2019 OLED TVs. According to AnandTech, “While HDMI-VRR was introduced as part of HDMI 2.1, the feature is an optional extension to HDMI and is not contingent on the latest standard's bandwidth upgrades. This has allowed manufacturers to add support for the tech to HDMI 2.0 devices, which is exactly what has happened with the Xbox One X and now NVIDIA's Turing video cards. Which in the case of NVIDIA's cards came as a bit of a surprise, since prior to the LG announcement NVIDIA never revealed that they could do HDMI-VRR on Turing.”

Another thing to note is that the next console generation, the PS5 and Xbox Scarlett are expected to take advantage of HDMI 2.1. So if you are in the market to pick up a TV, then the LG 2019 OLED TVs can be a consideration. You can check our detailed review of the LG C9 here.

Flipkart is bringing Nokia-branded Smart TVs in India

Nokia has announced that it is foraying into the television segment in India with its Nokia Smart TV. The smartphone maker is teaming up with Flipkart to release the product in the country and the device will sport sound by JBL. While one might be inclined to think that the TV is being made by Nokia, this might not actually the case. Flipkart has obtained permission to use the Nokia brand on a smart TV and sell it in India and this is not the first time this has happened. A few months ago, Motorola and Flipkart entered a partnership to announce a Motorola branded television, which is basically a Flipkart-made Smart TV with the Motorola brand name.

The Nokia-branded Smart TVs are said to come equipped with ‘superior’ audio quality that will be powered by JBL’s sound program. Since there are no specs of the upcoming TV’s audio system, we can’t really say how good or bad the sound on it will be. Additionally, the partnership with JBL for tuning audio on the upcoming Nokia branded TV is said to be backed by Flipkart’s consumer insights that say poor sound quality and experience is a major pain point for customers purchasing televisions.

“We are delighted that Flipkart, the leading e-commerce company in the country, will bring the first-ever Nokia branded Smart TVs to India. Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter for the Nokia brand in a new category,” said Mr Vipul Mehrotra, Vice President, Nokia Brand Partnerships. There are no additional details about the upcoming Nokia TV right now, including a possible launch date. However, we expect to learn more about the device in the coming days.

Some smartphone manufacturers like Motorola, and OnePlus are getting into other tech domains like TVs. Xiaomi is also a smartphone maker but in its home country, and now in India, it sells a slew of devices that range from categories like TVs to speakers to air purifiers. Similarly, OnePlus also recently announced two new TVs. You can learn more about this here.

MG ZS EV orders to start in late December, price to be announced in January

A couple of weeks ago, we reported that MG Motor would unveil its first all-electric SUV, the ZS EV, in December this year. According to a fresh report from Autocar India, the popular British automotive marque intends to go one step further. MG Motor will commence taking orders for its upcoming electric SUV in late December and announce its price in January 2020. The price of the MG ZS EV is expected to be in the neighbourhood of Rs 22 lakh at the time of its launch.

According to an interaction between Autocar India and Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director of MG Motor India, the company is well aware of the fact that EVs are still a hit or miss in the country, given the age and population of the market. “At least you can’t blame us for not trying. We are trying everything; we are trying to be innovators here,” he commented. MG Motor intends to give mainstream EV models a shot in the Indian market despite their low volume of sales.

The MG ZS EV is currently on sale in the UK, Thailand, and China. A trial production of the car is currently underway at MG Motor's Halol plant in Gujarat. To keep costs in check, the MG ZS EV will brought to the country as a CKD (completely knocked down) kit. “It’s not a volume game; it’s very niche. It’s basically the first of its kind in the country. So, it all depends on many factors. Volume is not important here; the important thing here is to give a good experience to the consumers and to educate the customers,” Chaba added.

The MG ZS EV that will be launched in India in December is expected to be powered by a 44.5kWh lithium-ion battery, which will be connected to a 150hp electric motor. The car is expected to deliver a range of 262 kilometres on a single charge. When it goes on sale, the MG ZS EV will compete directly with the Hyundai Kona, which was launched in July this year at a starting price of Rs 25.30 lakh. The upcoming MG ZS EV might just undercut the Kona with a slightly lower price of Rs 22 lakh. We'll know more about the EV as we approach the new year.
