OnePlus 8 Pro may feature a display with 120Hz refresh rate

OnePlus 7 Pro was launched in May this year. Now, after six months, OnePlus 8 Pro rumours have started trickling down from the rumour mill. After the launch of OnePlus 7T, the company said that all the upcoming OnePlus phones will feature a 90Hz refresh rate so it was a given that OnePlus 8 lineup would feature a display with the high refresh rate. However, according to the latest development, OnePlus 8 Pro could take it to another level for OnePlus. The device is said to come with a 120Hz refresh rate.

The information comes from tipster Max J. He took to Twitter to post an image with the caption “Be a ‘pro’”. The Twitter audience thought he was referring to the 120Hz display on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S11. But he later confirmed that he was talking about a device from OnePlus.

If the information turns out to be true, OnePlus 8 Pro will be the first device from the company to feature a display with a 120Hz refresh rate. For reference, ROG phone || is the only phone in the current scenario that supports a panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. However, the company is unlikely to offer the feature with the regular variant, OnePlus 8.

According to earlier rumours, OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro could launch in the second quarter of next year. The time coincides with the usual launch timeline of OnePlus phones. OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro were launched in May this year.

Moreover, early renders of the OnePlus 8 Pro have already leaked. The alleged renders showcase a key change in its design. The smartphone could come with a punch-hole display and quad rear camera setup.

OnePlus 8 Pro might sport a 6.65-inch display, which is slightly bigger than the 6.5-inch panel touted to be equipped on the OnePlus 8.

Vivo V17 allegedly leaked in live images, shows quad rear cameras

Vivo may launch another smartphone in its V-series. It is said to debut as the Vivo V17, and images of the smartphone have reportedly leaked. They give us a look of the rear anin d front of Vivo V17. The design highlight is the diamond-shaped camera module at the back that houses 4 cameras. Furthermore, some key specifications have also been leaked of the upcoming Vivo smartphone.

The latest development comes from Russia-based Hi-Tech.Mail that shows the Vivo V17 gradient finish on its glossy white rear panel with blue and pink accents. It shows the smartphone sporting a quad rear camera setup in a diamond-shaped camera module. The LED flash sits below the module. Plus, the device will come equipped with a 48MP sensor. However, the resolution of the other three cameras remains unknown.

To recall, a similar module has been seen on the recently leaked Vivo S5. It also has a distinctive design factor in the form of a diamond-shaped camera module that sports three lenses and an LED flash inside it. A fourth lens is present below the module. The Vivo S5 reportedly has a gradient finish as well.

In the leaked images, Vivo V17 is shown featuring a waterdrop notch and a thick chin at the bottom. No fingerprint sensor can be spotted in the leaked renders, hence, it can be assumed that the Vivo V17 will come with an in-display fingerprint scanner. Vivo V17 is rumoured to come with 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It is said to pack a 4500mAh battery. It is likely to feature fast charging.

There is no information on the chipset it will be powered by. However, a prominent “Camera & Music” branding can be seen on the back. Therefore, Vivo V17 could be targeted at people who want good cameras alongside a capable media consumption device.

OpenAI releases final version of the AI text generator it once deemed too dangerous

When is an AI ‘too smart’? Apparently, when it can be used to fool humans. OpenAI, the guys who previously created an AI that could play and win a game of DOTA 2 against top human players, have released the final version of their GPT-2 AI that can generate coherent paragraphs of text, and can perform rudimentary reading comprehension, machine translation, question answering and summarization without the need for task specific training.

GPT-2 is also able to generate sentences in Chinese, but the only reason OpenAI published the software as it is now is to show off to the world that it can be used to fool humans. The original GPT-2, released in 2015 and used in tests of Go, Go-playing AI and others, was not a complete piece of software and used some techniques to fool humans, notably using a hidden Markov model to generate sentences.

So what’s so smart or dangerous about that you may ask? Well, in a blog post back in February, OpenAI said that they will be releasing a smaller model due to concerns about malicious use of the technology. It was stated that the tech could be used to generate fake news articles, impersonate people, and automate the production of fake as well as phishing content.

However, now though, it looks like OpenAI have changed their mind. They have released the full version of the AI to the public. This version uses the full 1.5 billion parameters that it was initially trained under as compared to the previously released models that make use of fewer parameters.

In its new blog post. OpenAI notes that humans found the output of GPT-2 convincing. It notes that the Cornell University surveyed people to assign the GPT-2 text a credibility score. OpenAI claims that people gave the 1.5B model a score of 6.91 out of 10.

However, the company also notes that GPT-2 can be fine-tuned for misuse. It says that the Middlebury Institute of International Studies’ Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC) found that extremist groups can use GPT-2 for misuse. CTEC tuned GPT-2 on four ideological positions, namely white supremacy, Marxism, jihadist Islamism and anarchism and found that it can be used to generate “synthetic propaganda” for these ideologies.

But, OpenAI says that it hasn’t yet come across any evidence of instances of GPT-2 being misused. “We think synthetic text generators have a higher chance of being misused if their outputs become more reliable and coherent. We acknowledge that we cannot be aware of all threats, and that motivated actors can replicate language models without model release,” OpenAI writes.

Of course, GPT-2 also has a range of positive use cases. As OpenAI noted, it can be used in creating AI writing agents, better dialogue agents, unsupersides translation and better speech recognition systems. Does this balance out the fact that it could be used to write very convincing fake news and propaganda? We don’t know as of yet.

As for how good the system is, well, we fed the first paragraph of this piece in a web version of GPT-2 and well.. the second paragraph of this piece is entirely fake and generated by GPT-2 (although everything after that is factual). You can check it out for yourself here. Props to you if you weren’t fooled. Anyway, it’s not like huge masses of people can be fooled by fake news right? Oh, right...
