Realme 5s will sport 48MP rear camera sensor, 5000mAh battery: Madhav Sheth

Realme is gearing up to launch two new smartphones in India, the Realme X2 Pro and the Realme 5s. We already know almost everything there is to know about the Realme X2 Pro since it’s already being sold in China, however, the Realme 5s is still something of a mystery. Now, Realme CEO Madhav Sheth is revealing some specifications of the phone ahead of its November 20 launch. The company executive revealed that the handset will come equipped with a 48MP quad-camera setup on the back, along with a notable 5000maAh battery.

While we aren’t completely sure how different the Realme 5s will be from the existing Realme 5. However, going by the two specs, there might be smaller differences that set the two apart. The Realme 5s is expected to be an upgrade to the Realme 5 and as per the ongoing rumours, it could come equipped with a  6.5-inch HD+ display that has a 720x1600p resolution. It could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset, paired with 4GB RAM. The handset might come equipped with a 13MP sensor on ášhe front and it is now confirmed that it will get a 5000mAh battery.

Realme is also expected to launch a new fitness band in India at its November 20 launch event. In an episode of ‘#AskMadhav’, Sheth said, “I can just give you a hint: if you’re a fitness enthusiast, time to get fitter, guys.” While this is not a confirmation that the company will be launching a fitness wearable, it sure seems like a hint. It would make sense as well to foray into the fitness wearable segment in India, where currently Xiaomi has made a name for itself with the Mi Band series of devices. To recall, Xiaomi recently announced the Mi Band 4 in India that features a colour supporting OLED display, upgraded heart rate tracking and more.

Intels new Cascade Lake processors vulnerable to new Zombieload attack

Intel’s string of bad luck seems to keep going, now in the form of a new vulnerability. Security researchers have discovered a new variant of the Zombieload attack that was uncovered earlier this year. The new vulnerability affects all processors in the Cascade Lake family.

The new vulnerability was uncovered by the same team that found Spectre and Meltdown, two flaws that dealt a lot of damage to Intel’s reputation. The exploit named Zombieload could potentially allow an attacker to steal sensitive information from memory. According to TechCrunch,

“Intel calls the vulnerability Transactional Asynchronous Abort, or TAA. It’s similar to the microarchitectural data sampling vulnerabilities that were the focus of earlier chip-based side-channel attacks, but TAA applies only to newer chips. The new variant of the Zombieload attack allows hackers with physical access to a device the ability to read occasionally sensitive data stored in the processor. The vulnerability is found in how the processor tries to predict the outcome of future commands. This technique, known as speculative execution, makes the processor run faster, but its flawed design makes it possible for attackers to extract potentially sensitive data.”

The list of processors impacted by the new Zombieload attack includes the newly announced Intel Extreme processors such as the Intel Core i9-10900X, all the way up to Core i9-10980XE. The new Xeon processors are affected as well, including the recently announced Intel Xeon W-2200 series. Intel has said that they will be releasing a microcode update for the CPUs as part of its Patch Tuesday.

Earlier when the original Zombieload vulnerability was discovered, Intel had said that they would be making changes to Cascade Lake in ways where the exploit would not work. Intel did live up to its words, but the new version of Zombieload renders Intel’s changes moot. You can read the entire whitepaper on the Zombieload website.

ISRO publishes fresh Chandrayaan-2 images, captures 3D view of the Moons geographic features

ISRO has recently published another set of images taken through the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter on its official Twitter account. The fresh images, taken through the orbiter’s inbuilt Terrain Mapping Camera-2 (TMC-2), give us a 3D view of an isolated impact crater on the moon’s surface. According to the Indian space agency, the images were shot from a 100-kilometre orbit in the process of preparing a digital elevation model (DEM).

Wrinkle Ridge Dorsa Geikie

ISRO says that the TMC-2 imaging equipment used on board the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter is a revised version of the original TMC unit that was on board Chandrayaan-1. The images taken through the TMC-2, when processed into DEMs, enable lunar geomorphology, or the study of the origin and evolution of topographic features on the moon’s surface. This includes craters and other topographic features such as lava tubes, lunar domes, and wrinkle ridges.

Wrinkle ridges are long, rigid, venous formations found around craters on the moon. Spanning hundreds of kilometres, they are formed when waves of lava cool and contract. Also called veins sometimes, they are usually named with the Latin prefix ‘Dorsa’. One of the wrinkle ridges captured by the TMC-2 is near Dorsa Geikie. Though you probably can't tell from ISRO’s image, this wrinkle ridge is expected to be many kilometres in length.

Isolated Crater near Lindbergh

One of the images in ISRO’s recent set gives us a 3D oblique view of an isolated impact crater "near Lindbergh". Though it probably looks small in the image, the crater is speculated to have diameter of 16 kilometres and height of 1,400 metres. It is shaped like a bowl and the interior floor is half of its total diameter (8 kilometres). The Lindbergh crater was previously named Messier G, after notable French astronomer Charles Messier.

Instagram launches TikTok competitor called Reels, in Brazil

Instagram has started testing a video-music remix feature to rival TikTok. Instagram Reels lets users create 15-second videos set to music, which can be shared as Stories. The company has rolled out a new Top Reels section in Explore to let users find and watch viral video clips. Similar to TikTok, users can play songs to their Reels from the available catalogue of music or use audio from someone else’s video.

The new feature has been launched on iOS and Android, but it is currently available only in Brazil, where it is called Cenas. Brazil has a big Instagram population and creator community that could help the company nail down its customization and onboarding strategy before rolling out the feature elsewhere.

TechCrunch reports that Reels leverages all of Instagram’s most popular features. Instead of making a new app all-together like Facebook Lasso, Instagram could cross-promote Reels heavily to its own billion users by introducing it as a new feature within the app. Interestingly, TikTok allows users to download videos and share them on other platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and even Instagram to gain popularity.

“I think Musically before TikTok, and TikTok deserves a ton of credit for popularizing this format,” says Instagram director of product management Robby Stein. He suggests, “No two products are exactly the same, and at the end of the day, sharing video with music is a pretty universal idea we think everyone might be interested in using. The focus has been on how to make this a unique format for us.”

We will have to wait and see if Instagram Reels takes off in Brazil and if Instagram proceeds to launch it in other places.

Jios Rs 149 recharge plan revamped with lower validity and data

Jio has reworked its Rs 149 plan. The plan now brings with it 24 days validity instead of 28 days and 36GB of data instead of 42GB data (1.5GB data per day). The recharge also brings with it 100 SMSes every day. Users also get a complimentary subscription to Jio’s Apps. The reason for the reduction in validity and data is to leverage Interconnection Usage Charge (IUC). Apart from the Rs 149 plan, Jio has also announced Rs 222, Rs 333 and Rs 444 plans which bring with it 2GB data per day with a validity of one, two and three months respectively.

Besides the data, these recharges bring with them unlimited free calls to other users on Jio’s network. Calls to non-Jio networks will be limited to a FUP of 1,000 minutes. This means that the recharge includes the charges for 1000 minutes of calling to a non-Jio Network. Users can use the Rs 10 top-up to make calls to non-Jio Networks after the FUP limit is reached. The Rs 10 top-up will give users 1GB of data as well. One thing to note with Jio’s new plans is the ability to extend any of the three existing plans by a month by paying Rs 111. So, as an example, if you have opted for the Rs 333 plan, you can pay an additional Rs 111 to extend the benefits for an additional month.

Jio has collaborated with Paytm to give users discounts on the newly launched plans. Learn how to avail the discounts here.
