Google Maps for iOS, Android gets an audio translation feature

Google Maps has added a feature for the people who travel to foreign countries. The company is integrating a new translator feature next to the name of the place of interest that will say the name or address out loud. It is supposed to help tourists get to the required places easier than ever.

Foreign landmarks will have a small speaker icon in the Maps. Tapping on it will make the app read the location. Further, it will also offer a button to get more translations if the user wants to continue the conversation with locals. The text-to-speech technology in Google Maps automatically detects what needs to be translated.

Furthermore, the company is bringing Google Maps and Google Translate closer together. The Google Translate app will be opened straight away for more translations. However, the app must be installed on the phone for that to happen.

To enable the new feature, users need to update their app to the latest version. It is rolling out gradually, so some users may have to wait for up to one month. The phone will automatically detect that the user needs a translation and show the speaker icon. For instance, if your phone is set to English and you are in China, you’ll see the new speaker icon next to the pace’s name and address. It will show a real-time translation.

As of now, the feature supports 50 languages and it will be made available to both iOS and Android. You can head over to the official Google blog post for more information on the new feature.

Earlier this month, Google introduced the Incognito mode to the Maps on Android. However, Google Assistant microphone isn’t available in navigation when the Incognito Mode is on. You can enable the mode by following the steps mentioned here.

Chadwick Boseman returns as a hard-nosed New York cop in 21 Bridges

Fresh off the success of the MCU’s Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman is one of the hottest names in Hollywood, right now. His stock has never been higher and it’s time to strike while the iron is hot.  The acclaimed actor has stepped into the shoes of a grizzled New York cop who has to shut down the 21 bridges leading to and out of New York to catch two cop killers.

It’s definitely a bold move as an action star who is one of the biggest and most popular superheroes on the planet. His role as Black Panther really cemented him as an actor to watch out for. Directed by Brian Kirk and produced by the acclaimed Russo Brothers, 21 Bridges aims to be a gritty crime thriller and by all the looks of it, it seems to be heading down that path.

Huawei Kirin A1-powered Watch GT2 coming to India next month

Huawei will be bringing the Kirin A1-powered wearable devices to India next month. The Kirin A1, according to Huawei, consumes low power and offers support for all sorts of sensors and connectivity to improve the wearable experience. The Kirin A1 was first showed off at IFA trade show in September, and meant to power low-power wearables like smartwatches, wireless earbuds, smart speakers and the likes. The A1 is being positioned as a means to unify Huawei’s ecosystem products.

As of now, Huawei confirmed it will launch the Huawei WatchGT2 smartwatch in India next month. Huawei also launched the FreeBuds 3 truly wireless earphones internationally, but the company has not officially clarified when it plans to launch it in India.

The Kirin A1 chip relies on ARM Cortex-M7 cores designed to consume low power. Huawei claims the chip delivers industry-leading power consumption of 10uA/MHz. It’s also the first chip for wearable devices to support Bluetooth 5.1 and Bluetooth 5.1 LE simultaneously. The A1 chip also comes with a Bluetooth processing unit, audio processing unit and a low-power application processor and independent power management unit.

On top of that, the Kirin A1 supports optical heart sensors, six-axis gyroscope, and a host of the other monitoring capabilities that should enhance the wearable experience for users. The chip will find use in sports training, home entertainment, etc.

Despite the leap in technological prowess, Huawei is still reeling from the US trade ban on doing business with US companies. The Huawei Mate 30 series that the company launched earlier this year came without Google apps and services. Huawei also did not announce any plans to launch the flagship smartphone in India. It seems the WatchGT2 and other wearable devices are being launched to keep operations rolling for the company which, along with its sister brand Honor, has otherwise ceased to launch new smartphones post the US ban.
