Samsung Galaxy A51 appears online, revealing some key specs

Samsung may be looking forward to expanding the Galaxy A-lineup and the Galaxy A51 could be the latest A-series phone from the company. The device has appeared on a Korean website with some key specifications. The phone has already received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Wi-Fi Alliance and Geekbench, which hints at the imminent launch of the phone.

According to the latest leak, the Samsung Galaxy A51 could feature a 6.5-inch display. It may be powered by the Exynos 9611 chipset, paired with 6GB RAM. The smartphone may come with 128GB of internal storage. The device is said to pack a 4000mAh battery.

Previously leaked renders hint at a rectangular cutout that may house quad cameras and an LED flash. The phone also appears to sport a punch-hole notch like the Galaxy Note10 series. The four cameras may be a 48MP primary sensor +  a 12MP ultrawide shooter + a 12MP telephoto camera + a 5MP depth sensor. It is tipped to have a 32MP selfie camera housed in the notch.

According to the leaked renders, the Galaxy A51 could have a loudspeaker, Type-C port and headphone jack at the bottom. It is said to come equipped with minimal bezels. Further, the smartphone was also spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance database, which revealed that the phone could come with dual-band Wi-Fi support and Android 10 out the box.

As for the Geekbench listing, Galaxy A51 could be powered by the 10nm FinFet Exynos 9611 SoC, paired with a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. The handset is expected to come equipped with 4GB RAM + 64GB/128GB of internal storage.

There is still no official word on the existence of the Galaxy A51. However, considering the number of leaks and rumours, we think that the device is expected to launch soon. Since the Galaxy A50 made it to India, the Galaxy A51 could launch here as well. The phone could be priced at around Rs 20,000.

WhatsApp at risk by a specially crafted MP4 file that could trigger stack-based buffer overflow attack

Facebook owned WhatsApp has been in the news from some time now for being affected by a serious privacy concern that stems from the use of Israeli spyware called Pegasus. Now, developers of the online chat app have published a new vulnerability in the app that suggests another way an attacker might be able to access your files and data. As per a recently published Facebook security advisory, a stack-based memory buffer overflow can be triggered by sending a specially crafted MP4 file to a WhatsApp user. “The issue was present in parsing the elementary stream metadata of an MP4 file and could result in a DoS or RCE,” states the advisory.

Facebook simply says that the flaw could result in Denial of Service (DoS) or Remote Code Execution (RCE), but this is quite concerning. While DoS might hamper you from using WhatsApp on your phone, RCE is not something to be taken lightly. Using Remote Code Execution, an attacker can run code on your device, which can result from downloading and sideloading malware to hijacking it and accessing your data. The flaw affects Android versions of WhatsApp before the 2.19.274 update, iOS versions prior to 2.19.100, Enterprise Client versions prior to 2.25.3, Windows Phone versions before and including 2.18.368, Business for Android versions prior to 2.19.104, and Business for iOS versions prior to 2.19.100.

The revelation of this new exploit comes soon after the Pegasus fiasco where the spyware was allegedly used to spy on numerous entities. As per a previous report, WhatsApp alerted two dozen academics, lawyers, Dalit activists and journalists across India that their devices were under surveillance for a two-week period till May 2019. The time period coincides with the 2019 General Elections in India. You can read more about this here.

Google Assistant Ambient Mode reportedly rolling out to more Nokia smartphones

Nokia is known to keep its promises of rolling out the latest software updates on time for its devices. All smartphones by the company are a part of the Android One program, which means they get two major Android versions and three years of security patches. As per a new report, the smartphone maker is now pushing out an update to its handsets, which enables Ambient mode in Google Assistant. This feature debuted with a handful of devices including the Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 smartphones. As per an NPU report, the company is enabling the option on Nokia  6.1, Nokia 6.1 Plus, Nokia 7.1, Nokia 8.1, Nokia 9 PureView and even Nokia 3, Nokia 3.2, and Nokia 4.2.

It seems to be a server-side feature since one can check if it is available on a device from the Google Assistant settings. To check, you need to go to Settings and access Account Services in the Google option. Here, under Search, navigate to Assistant & Voice. Tap on Google Assistant, then Assistant and scroll down to Assistant device to find the option ‘Phone’. The option, if enabled for your device, will be listed here.

To recall, Ambient Mode for Google Assistant is a new way that Google is trying to integrate its smart assistant in some devices. The option turns on when a device is plugged in and brings forth a UI that turns your device into a smart display. In this mode, a smartphone will display notifications and information from apps like calendar and reminder. One can also control music and their smart home devices. The Ambient Mode was announced for Lenovo Smart Tab M8 HD and Lenovo Yoga Smart Tab tablets when they are docked for charging. Currently, only Nokia handsets are getting the feature, however, we can expect phones from other brands to also receive it.

Apple AirPods Pro receive first firmware update

Apple has quietly sent out a firmware update for its recently launched AirPods Pro wireless earbuds. This update, being the very first for the pair since the late October launch, could include either a hotfix for a bug the company has detected or an enhancement in wireless connectivity. According to MacRumors, the firmware update is labelled ‘2B588’ and will automatically be installed to replace the release version ‘2B584’ when the AirPods Pro are connected to an iOS device.

To see if your pair of AirPods Pro has received the firmware update, open the iOS device that is paired to the earbuds and visit Settings > General > About. Scroll down the list and tap ‘AirPods Pro’. If you see ‘2B588’ listed under Firmware Version, it means you’re good to go. If you’re still on the older version, wait for a few days to receive it as Apple may not have sent the update out to all regions yet. Sadly, there’s no way to trigger the update process manually.

Apple launched the AirPods Pro late last month at a price of Rs 24,900. They’re more sophisticated and expensive than the second-generation AirPods the Cupertino-based company launched some eight months ago. The AirPods Pro are the first earbuds from Apple to feature an active noise cancellation feature. Available only in a white colour at the moment, they’re designed to sit deeper in the user’s ears (like typical in-ear headphones do) than the previous models.

According to Apple, the AirPods Pro come with soft, flexible silicone ear tips in three different sizes (small, medium, large). What’s more, the earbuds are IPX4-rated for sweat- and water-resistance. The AirPods Pro are powered by the same 10-core Apple H1 chip that does duty on the AirPods 2 (for both sound and Siri). The pair also comes with features such as Adaptive EQ (for automatically tuned audio enhancement) and Transparency mode (for easy conversation with people around the user when the active noise cancellation feature is enabled).

Microsoft to pull plug on Cortana mobile app, bring Cortana to Office apps

If you’re a loyal user of the Microsoft Cortana app on Android or iOS, brace yourself for some bad news. Microsoft has confirmed that it intends to pull the plug on the Cortana mobile app by the end of January 2020 in certain regions, including India, Australia, Canada, and the UK. Cortana will also cease to exist on the Microsoft Launcher for Android. Microsoft says that its virtual assistant service will eventually find itself in future Microsoft Office products even if the dedicated mobile app is discontinued.

“After January 31st, 2020, the Cortana mobile app on your phone will no longer be supported and there will be an updated version of Microsoft Launcher with Cortana removed,” writes Microsoft in a support page applicable to users in Australia, Canada, and the UK. According to a confirmation received by The Verge, this will apply to users in India, China, Spain, Germany, and Mexico as well. Users in the US, however, may continue to see the app on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Microsoft says that any reminders, tasks, or lists created in the Cortana mobile app will continue to exist in the Microsoft To Do app, which you can find here. This data can also be accessed through Cortana on Windows 10. Microsoft first announced that it would launch a dedicated Cortana app on Android and iOS back in May 2015. Though the official app release happened in December that year, the APK file for Android was leaked shortly after the announcement.

In its support page, Microsoft mentions that it’s discontinuing the Cortana mobile app to make way for a deeper integration of its virtual assistant in its popular Office suite of productivity applications. Though we don’t know when this will happen or what the finished product will look like, we can expect Cortana in Microsoft Office to work like a redesigned Clippit, except through voice commands from the user instead of mouse clicks.

Vivo Y19 quietly launched in India at Rs 13,990

Vivo has quietly added a new model to its long list of Y-series smartphones in India. Called Vivo Y19, it is a mid-range model that’s currently available in stores offline across the country for Rs 13,990. In the one and only variant that it ships in, the Vivo Y19 features 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage space (expandable up to 256GB). In addition, the smartphone gets a triple rear camera setup, a tall 6.53-inch screen, and a 5000mAh battery with 18W fast-charging.

Sold in China as the Vivo Y5s with up to 6GB of RAM and double the storage space, the Vivo Y19, in India, is powered by a MediaTek Helio P65 chipset with an Octa-core processor. The 6.53-inch IPS LCD screen has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and maximum resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. In addition, the device features Bluetooth 5.0 and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Because it sports a meaty 5000mAh battery, the device weighs 193g. Along with the 18W fast-charging, the Vivo Y19 supports 5W reverse charging, which means you can juice up a pair of Bluetooth earphones using the phone.

Like the competition, the Vivo Y19 packs a triple camera setup on its rear panel. The primary sensor is a 16MP unit with an aperture of f/1.8 and phase-detection autofocus. The second sensor is a 13mm ultra-wide unit with an aperture of f/2.2 and field of view of 120 degrees. The third and final sensor is a 2MP macro camera with an aperture of f/2.4 and minimum focussing distance of 4 centimetres. The single selfie camera, which sits in a tiny teardrop-shaped notch on top of the screen, is a 16MP unit with an aperture of f/2.0.

Though the Chinese smartphone manufacturer hasn’t released a press release after the launch or updated its official website to include the new entrant, many recent reports say the Vivo Y19 is currently available only in brick and mortar establishments. Whether Vivo India plans to sell the model through e-retailers like Amazon.in and Flipkart is still unknown. Tying up with multiple established banks, Vivo India is currently offering a cashback of up to 10 per cent on many of its models as part of its fifth anniversary celebration.
