Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales is starting a new social platform to take on Facebook and Twitter

Are you tired of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? Well, there is some good news for you as the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales has just announced a new social media network called WT: Social. The platform is essentially a revamped version of the news-focused site from 2017. In the wake of fake news and clickbait articles on sites like Facebook and even Twitter, this new social platform is aiming at focusing on what’s right. The network wants to disrupt and change the world of social media by doing what’s right instead of doing what’s best for business.

Essentially, WT: Social wants to empower users to read and consume the right news and not be led astray by fake and misleading news pieces. One piece of information that caught our eye was the statement on the website which read, “We will never sell your data. Our platform survives on the generosity of individual donors to ensure privacy is protected and your social space is ad-free.”

So, because the platform is going to be ad-free, they obviously need to have another revenue source. This is where the Wikipedia system pops in. Users will be asked to provide a few donations to the platform. As of right now, there is a waiting period to join the site, but users who want to skip the line and get on the platform as soon as possible can donate $ 12.00 a month or $ 100 annually.

Jimmy Wales also announced the fact that the platform has amassed around 100,00 new users in a tweet.

Six hours or so ago I announced we passed 80,000 users on https://t.co/I8xfkDVdU1 - now we just hit 100,000! Please share. The world doesn't have to be like this!

Samsung to outsource Galaxy A-series production to a Chinese ODM to compete with Xiaomi

Samsung has been facing stiff competition from Chinese smartphone manufacturers, especially in the budget and mid-range segments. While the company does offer compelling devices but they are generally priced higher than the competition. Hence, Samsung is reportedly planning to outsource a fifth of its smartphone production to China next year in a bid to compete with low-cost rivals such as Xiaomi.

According to a report from Reuters, Samsung is outsourcing production of some of its Galaxy A models to original design manufacturers (ODMs) like Wingtech in China. Wingtech makes devices for multiple brands like Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo. The increased level of production allows them to keep costs down and produce phones quickly. Therefore, to cut costs on the production of budget phones, Samsung may be looking to outsource it. Samsung hasn’t revealed any details regarding the same yet.

“It is crucial to cut costs to maintain competitiveness with Huawei and other Chinese handset makers,” said a Samsung insider to Reuters.

The move could help Samsung lower the price of some of its phones. However, it could result in the company losing control of the quality of its devices. According to the critics, this strategy could help ODMs further reduce the costs due to additional volume. It may help the company’s rivals instead. Samsung said that it is making limited lines of smartphones outside of its own plants to widen its existing portfolio and “ensure efficient management in the market”.

ODMs manufactured Samsung phones are said to primarily be sold in South Asia and South America. For reference, Apple already outsources its production to Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology, which has factories in China. Although, Apple retains control over the design of its devices. On the other hand, Samsung’s ODM Wingtech is said to have a hand in both the design and production of its devices.

TikTok crosses 15 billion installs, could get a sister music streaming app, and is reportedly testing links in bio and shopping links in posts

TikTok has made headlines this week for a slew of reasons and here’s a roundup of all of them. First off, the app has again reached a milestone in terms of download numbers. As per a SensorTower report, TikTok has crossed 1.5 billion downloads on the App Store and Google Play Store. The news comes just nine months after TikTok crossed 1 billion downloads this year. In addition, there’s also some new development about a new music streaming app that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is reportedly working on. Finally, TikTok has also commenced testing new ways to enable users to sell stuff on the platform by enabling them to inserṭ links in their posts and bio.

Starting off with the download numbers, TikTok has clocked 1.5 billion downloads on the App Store and Google Play Store. As per the SensorTower report, TikTok was the fourth most downloaded non-gaming app in the world last year and it is currently holding the third spot in the list of the most downloaded non-gaming app this year. Currently, it lags behind WhatsApp, which has  707.4 million installs and Messenger, which clocks in at the number two spot with 636.2 million downloads. Users in India have apparently helped boost the install numbers for TikTok since 664.8 million or about 31 percent of all unique installs are said to be from users based out of India.

Moving on, ByteDance, the Chinese company that created TikTok was previously reported of working on a new music streaming app. It is reportedly gearing up to foray into the music streaming industry and take on the likes of Apple Music, Spotify and others. As per a new Financial Times report, ByteDance is in talks with Universal Music, Sony Music and Warner Music to bag global licensing deals so that it can include produced music in its app. This new app might launch by next month and it could debut first in India, Indonesia and Brazil before expanding to other regions.

TikTok also seems to be taking big steps to enable revenue generation through its platform. A Twitter user posted a video showcasing a new link in bio and social commerce URL embedding in the app. This is reported to be a limited test that the app developers are conducting and if successful, there’s a possibility that it will be rolled out for more users. The option comes not too late after Instagram enabled creators to sell products on the platform via posts and stories.

All 2020 Xiaomi phones over Rs 20,000 will support 5G: Xiaomi CEO

A couple of months ago, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced that the company will launch at least 10 phones with 5G support in 2020. It will make Xiaomi one of the first companies to launch 5G phones next year. Now, Jun has revealed in a keynote that all the Xiaomi phones over CNY 2,000 (approx. Rs 20,000) will have 5G capabilities. He announced the latest development at the annual China Mobile Global Partner Conference.

In his keynote, Jun said that the plans are to add 70 million 5G users in 2020 and to expand the 5G application to over 100 industries. The Chinese phone manufacturer has already launched two 5G phones - the Mi Mix 3 5G and Mi 9 Pro 5G - in the local market this year. According to Jun, the demands for these phones exceeded Xiaomi’s expectations that led to supply chain issues. Therefore, the company has been prompted to launch 5G models for the high, middle, and low-end price tiers, next year.

Lei has previously said, “People in the industry fear that next year 4G models won’t sell, this is a step you have no choice but to take, so we hope that operators can speed up their expansion of 5G base stations.”

For reference, Chinese carriers have already started accepting pre-subscriptions for 5G and around  9.3 million users have signed up for the next-generation communication technology even before it is rolled out in China. The carriers are allowing people to sign up for 5G via text message. It is expected that China will be the largest early adopter of 5G infrastructures as more consumers are expected to migrate towards 5G in 2020.

According to Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) projections, the demand for 5G smartphones could reach 300 million units by 2020, which equals to 10 percent rise in 5G phones.
