Google will now be able to read the daily news to you

Google have really been on a roll recently. From the release of Stadia, the American tech giant has now rolled out a new feature in the US called ‘Your News Update’. This is essentially Goggle’s very own news reader as the Assistant will now be able to read the news aloud. This allows the Assistant to read the news from a tailored feed which is based on a particular user’s interests. This gives people who don’t have the time to read the paper or even the news app an easy way of catching up with world events.

Users who want to enable the feature will have to head to your Assistant Settings and choose a new option rather than News briefings. If done correctly, all you need to do now is say the phrase, “Hey Google, play me the news” and the Assistant will start reading out the news to you. Just remember that this will be a personalized service.

The stories that you will be listening to are essentially made up based on your particular interests and hobbies. This doesn’t mean that the top news stories won’t show up. Far from it as the feature will also pull up all the latest and top stories of the day. Basically, the Assistant will now behave like a newscaster and give you a aural breakdown of the day’s events.

As of now, the feature is only available in the United States but we’re pretty sure that the feature will be expanding into other markets in 2020. But for now, only users in the US can access the feature.

Samsung Galaxy A51 passes Bluetooth Certification, launch imminent

Samsung Galaxy A51 has been doing the rounds of the rumour mill for a while now. The smartphone could be a mid-range Samsung device, the successor to Galaxy A50. It makes sense for Samsung to go forward with the Galaxy A-lineup since it has been a critical growth factor for the company in 2019. Now, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has been spotted on a Bluetooth certification website.

The latest development comes from SamMobile, which spotted the Galaxy A51 on Bluetooth certification site LaunchStudio. The Galaxy A51 could be the first Galaxy A smartphone from Samsung in 2020. The back panel of Galaxy A51 was leaked a few days ago, which revealed an L-shaped setup for the previously speculated, quad-camera setup. It also revealed that the Galaxy A51 may come equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack. The smartphone is also expected to have a dual SIM slot and a USB Type-C connector.

The Galaxy A51 was reportedly spotted on Geekbench as well. A smartphone with model number SM-A515F, which is claimed to be Galaxy A51 was spotted on the listing. The Galaxy A51 is said to have scored 323 points in the single-core and 1,185 points in the multi-core tests. The smartphone could be powered by the 10nm FinFet Exynos 9611 SoC, paired with a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. It is tipped to run Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top.

In terms of optics, Galaxy A51 is said to sport a quad red camera setup: a 48MP primary sensor alongside 12MP ultrawide lens, 12MP telephoto shooter and a 5MP depth sensor. It may also come with a 32MP selfie shooter. It is tipped to arrive in silver, black, and blue colour options.

Recently, alleged Samsung Galaxy A51 support page appeared on the Samsung Russia website. The smartphone is said to sport minimal bezels with a flat display measuring in at 6.5-inches. The smartphone is rumoured to pack a 4000mAh battery.

Android camera app can be hacked to spy on you, show researchers

An attacker hacking into your Android phone’s camera app to view your surroundings and record you is a scary thought but more likely than you probably thought. A recent report published by Israeli security research firm Checkmarx reveals that the camera app from Google and Samsung contains vulnerabilities, which, when exploited, could allow an attacker to gain complete control over the app even if the app’s permissions (for storage, location, etc.) are locked.

In a detailed report and video published a few days ago, the researchers at Checkmarx demonstrate that their mock-up app—a seemingly harmless weather app—was able to hijack the default camera app on a Google Pixel 2 XL running Android 9 Pie. The video shows that Checkmarx’s app was able to record videos, take photos, bypass the camera app’s permissions, access stored media, and retrieve the user’s location through the media file’s GPS metadata.

The report mentions that this sort of a hijack is possible with Samsung’s camera app as well. The report goes on to mention that Google responded by acknowledging the problem and letting Checkmarx know that a fix had already been sent out in July earlier in the year. “The issue was addressed on impacted Google devices via a Play Store update to the Google Camera Application in July 2019. A patch has also been made available to all partners.”

In the video, the researchers also show a real-life scenario in which this sort of an attack could be dangerous to the user and their data. In the video, an attacker is seen making a call to the victim. When the victim places the phone against their ear, the attacker runs the mock-up hijack app to record video through the phone’s rear camera. The recorded video captures the sensitive data that’s viewed on user’s external display, thus letting the attacker steal data using the hijack app.
