PUBG Mobile to get 90Hz fps gameplay, support for true 10-bit HDR display PUBG now available on PlayStation Now

Qualcomm recently announced its latest Snapdragon 865 SoC at its three-day Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii. While we’ve gone in-depth in understanding more about what’s new with the chip and how it works, there were multiple other announcements made on the second day of the event. Qualcomm announced that the online battle royale title PUBG Mobile will soon get support for running at 90fps, along with support for a true 10-bit HDR display. Additionally, PUBG is being added to Sony’s PlayStation Now subscription service library, joining Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, and Formula 1 2019.

Qualcomm announced that it has been working closely with the PUBG Mobile team for bringing 90 fps gaming to the game. This means we can finally expect a smoother, more fluid gameplay with PUBG Mobile, which is still capped at 60fps on smartphones. Currently, even if you have a smartphone like OnePlus 7 Pro and above, or the Asus ROG Phone that come equipped with a 90Hz display, it doesn’t mean that you will be able to play the game at a higher frame rate. The announcement of PUBG Mobile working at 90Hz doesn’t really come as a surprise since we previously reported that the option to run the game at 90Hz and even 120Hz is being tested in beta.

As mentioned above, Qualcomm also announced that PUBG Mobile will get true 10-bit HDR support. The mobile game can be expected to feature better overall dynamic range and colour depth with the new feature but as always, it will be noticeable only on devices that support a 10-bit HDR display. Finally, Sony is adding PUBG to its PlayStation Now subscription service's library and it will now be available alongside Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, and Formula 1 2019. PlayStation Now subscription enables players to play over 800 games with a monthly fee of $9.99 (Rs 700 approx) or $59.99 (Rs 4,300 approx) per year.

Redmi K30 will have a 4G variant, the company confirms

Redmi K30 is all set to be launched on December 10. As we close in on the date, the company is revealing teasers for the upcoming phone. It is said to be powered by the freshly announced Snapdragon 765G SoC, which is the GPU-boosted variant of the Snapdragon 765 chipset. The Redmi K30 is confirmed to support 5G. However, the company has now confirmed that it will have a 4G variant as well, which makes sense as markets like India are not ready for 5G models yet.

The latest development comes from the VP of Xiaomi Group and General Manager of Redmi brand, Lu Weibing. He took to Weibo to post the teaser image for the Redmi K30 4G. Lu mentioned that fans who are worried about the high price of Redmi K30's 5G variant can be rest assured that a less expensive Redmi K30 4G variant will be launched. However, he didn’t reveal when the 4G variant will be launched, but the 5G variant is confirmed to be announced on December 10.

Redmi K30 is confirmed to be made of frosted glass at the rear. The 4G variant is expected to sport the same design. As for the alleged camera specifications of Redmi K30 5G, it is expected to sport a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary sensor with an f/1.89 lens + an 8MP sensor + a 5MP shooter + a 2MP camera. Xiaomi has teased the presence of the "world's first high-resolution image sensor" on the Redmi K30.

The official renders of Redmi K30 have revealed a new design for the camera setup on the Redmi K30. The Redmi K30 5G can be seen sporting a centrally placed, vertically stacked quad-camera setup with a circular ring around the camera on the back. The Redmi K30 is tipped to feature a 6.66-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Furthermore, Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun has already confirmed that the device will run on MIUI 11 at launch.

2020 LG Gram 17 with Intel 10th Gen CPUs, larger battery announced

LG may be a bit slow to update its laptop range but it’s finally getting around to doing it a few weeks before we ring in the new year. According to a news release shared by LG Electronics, the Korean electronics manufacturer has quietly announced the 2020 LG Gram 17 laptop with Intel’s 10th Gen (Ice Lake) Core series CPUs. The new Gram 17 (model: 17Z90N) retains its 17-inch slim, lightweight avatar but gets a few physical modifications, including a slightly larger battery.

LG claims that Intel’s 10-nanometre 10th Gen Core series chips help the Gram 17 deliver two times better graphics performance. As always, the laptop comes with an expansion slot to add more RAM and storage. Like its predecessor, the 2020 model is certified to MIL-STD-810 standards for rigidity and durability. The LG Gram 17 continues to sport a large 17-inch IPS panel with a WQXGA resolution (2560 x 1600 pixels). The laptop’s weight remains almost unchanged at 1.35 kilogrammes.

The 2020 LG Gram 17 comes with a few physical changes. The first among them is a slightly larger battery. An 80Wh non-removable battery replaces the 72Wh unit that did duty on the previous model. The weight of the laptop has increased but only by about 10g. The 2020 model also comes with a four-column numpad, which replaces the three-column unit from the previous model for increased convenience while working on spreadsheets. LG says it has also redesigned the laptop to hide the display hinges better. The new model is also shorter by 3mm vertically.

The 2020 LG Gram 17 will be available for pre-order between January 1 and 6 along with the 14-inch (14Z90N) and 15-inch (15Z90N) versions of the same model. They too will sell with Intel’s new 10th Gen Core series chips. LG Electronics has not mentioned when the new models will be available in India. Until then, it will continue to sell its current generation of the Gram series in the country with Intel’s 8th Gen Core series CPUs. LG’s Gram series laptops start at Rs 95,000. Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 8c and Snapdragon 7c SoCs for entry-level and mainstream laptops

The last day of the Snapdragon Tech Summit concluded with some interesting new announcements. Picking up from where Qualcomm left things last year, the company announced its latest strides in the PC space, particularly for entry-level and mainstream PCs. And, a dash of 5G to the premium tier PCs.

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 7c and Snapdragon 8c SoCs for entry-level and mainstream PCs respectively. Both of them are based on ARM architecture and bring LTE connectivity and day-long battery to laptops.

Snapdragon 7c

The Snapdragon 7c is meant for entry-level PCs. Qualcomm said they are targeting OEMs for PCs prices below 300$ (roughly Rs 21,000) in emerging markets like India. The Snapdragon 7c uses ARM Cortex-A76 powered Kryo 468 cores and a Adreno 618 GPU, which Qualcomm claimed delivers up to 25 percent better performance as compared to the competition, by which, we presumed, Qualcomm meant Intel processors for the entry-level market. The Snapdragon 7c comes with an AI Engine capable of delivering 5 trillion operations per second and 2X more battery life than legacy entry-level PCs. Finally, the Snapdragon 7c comes with a Snapdragon X15 LTE modem delivering always-on connectivity.

Qualcomm is aiming at educational institutions, and first-time laptop buyers with the Snapdragon 7c. The reference-design laptop showcased in the demo zone was quite thick, much more than the ultra-slim high-end laptops powered by the Snapdragon 8CX chip. It ran up to a speed of 2.4GHz and had 6GB RAM installed.  Using the reference device was quite fun though. It was running a full version of Windows 10 and not a fork with features locked down. We used the Edge Chromium browser, opening websites and playing a video, all of which ran smoothly, but there was a long waiting time.

Snapdragon 8c

Moving up the ladder, the Snapdragon 8c is meant for PCs priced below 500$ (roughly Rs 35,000). The SoC is built using a 7nm manufacturing process and uses Kryo 490 CPUs, once again based on ARM-Cortex A76 and Cortex A55 cores, paired with an Adreno 675 GPU. Here, Qualcomm is promising 30 percent improvement in overall performance, as compared to regular mainstream laptops. The Snapdragon X24 LTE modem is inside the chip delivering LTE connectivity and Qualcomm claimed ‘multi-day’ battery life on laptops powered by the chip.

The Snapdragon 8c-based reference device that Qualcomm showcased in the demo room was built like a regular mainstream laptop. The properties menu showed the PC could hit a speed of 2.46GHz and had 4GB RAM installed. It wasn’t very heavy, neither was it as thick as the entry-level laptops running on Snapdragon 7c. It’s also far more capable. We opened a Powerpoint presentation, an excel sheet, played a 4K video and did some browsing, all the same time. Here, the PC did take a long time to open the apps, but once inside, it was all quite smooth. Switching between applications was also hassle-free and there wasn’t much of a lag.

India prospects?

The Snapdragon 8CX SoC that Qualcomm announced last year saw quite a few takers. Samsung, Lenovo and a few more Chinese and Japanese OEMs got onto the bandwagon and launched high-end thin-and-light laptops powered by the Snapdragon 8CX. Yet, none of them managed to make it to India and we are guessing it was primarily because of the prohibitory pricing. That’s expected, considering how new the technology really is, but in a market as cut-throat as India, high-end laptops anyway sell in fewer numbers. The new chips that the company announced on the third day of the summit are meant to address this gap in the market. It’s a way for Qualcomm to scale across multiple price points and particularly aim at emerging markets like India. PCs priced below $300 and $500 are quite popular in India, and if OEMs gets the marketing right, we might finally see ARM-powered always-connected laptops take off in India. No confirmation though.

Samsung Galaxy A71 leaked render shows minimal bezels, punch-hole display and more

Rumours regarding the Samsung Galaxy 2020 A lineup have been trickling down slowly. The latest leaked render reveals the alleged Galaxy A71, which reveals that the device will have a punch-hole display. The selfie shooter is supposed to be centrally aligned, like the Galaxy Note10 series, which translates to a smaller notch than the Galaxy S10 series. Further, the leak suggests that the Galaxy A71 will have minimal bezels on three sides.

The latest development comes from the popular tipster Evan Blass, who has tweeted the alleged render of the Galaxy A71.  The smartphone is shown to have shaved-off bezels on the sides and just a few millimetres of bezel at the bottom. Even the top bezel is minimal, which counters the previously leaked render that showed a few millimetres of bezel on the top of the device. The centrally aligned punch-hole notch appears to be of the same size as the Galaxy Note10’s notch.

Earlier renders have also revealed the back panel of the Galaxy A71. It is shown to sport a rectangular camera bump housing the four cameras arranged in an L-shape. The rear seems to be curved on the sides for a better grip. No fingerprint scanner can be seen at the rear, which means the Galaxy A71 may have an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Samsung Galaxy A71 is rumoured to come equipped with a USB Type-C port at the bottom. According to the previous renders, the device is supposed to have a speaker grille and a primary microphone at the bottom. The phone may have the SIM tray on the left side of the frame and the volume and power buttons rest on the right.

The Galaxy A71 is tipped to pack a 4500mAh battery. The smartphone was allegedly spotted on Geekbench last month. It could be powered by the Snapdragon 675 chipset, paired with 8GB RAM. The smartphone is likely to run Android 10 out of the box. Samsung could launch the Galaxy A71 in early 2020.
