Torrent site PirateBay seems to be testing a new streaming feature on its website

From the age of the VHS tape to the advent of Blu-Ray, the entertainment industry is always looking for newer distribution models. And, in 2019, we’ve got OTT streaming platforms. First popularised by Netflix, it seems that every second entertainment company is looking at maximizing their content by coming up with their own OTT streaming platforms. From ESPN to even Disney, these companies have all released their versions of streaming platforms. But now it seems that one of the most infamous sites on the internet has jumped into the streaming sphere and surprise, it’s PirateBay, the torrent website.

From a recent report on TorrentFreak, it seems that PirateBay is now allowing users to stream TV shows and films straight from your browser, just like any other OTT streaming platform. No need for an additional browser or app as you can literally just stream the shows and films you want to watch right on your browser. When you search for a particular film or show on PirateBay, you’ll now see a ‘B’ icon right below the said torrent. This will divert you to a site called BayStream from where you can stream content.

But, it looks like the feature has not been cleaned up as users are reporting a lot of broken links with shows and films missing. The function also does not work through proxies as reported by TorentFreak. But, from what we’ve noticed, all the popular content starts up just fine. So it’s not all a loss.

What happens next will depend on how the entire situation plays out. Keep watching this space for more stories like this one.

Google Chrome 79 now rolling out for Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, and iOS users: Here are the new features that it brings

Google Chrome is one of the top browsers available right now. As per Statista, Google Chrome took up about 70 percent of the global desktop internet browser market share between January 2015 and September 2019. However, we noticed that while Google is implementing a slew of new changes under the hood for the browser, there haven’t been any prominently visible changes for users. Google intends to change this with the latest Chrome 79.0.3945.79 update, which is now rolling out for Windows, Mac and Linux. The new update brings a host of new security improvements to the browser, along with multiple other new features, which should be helpful for users.

The first notable feature one will get with the  Chrome 79.0.3945.79 update is an integrated password checking utility. This new tool was previously available as an extension that one needed to download from the Chrome Web Store but now, it will be available within the browser by default. The new feature checks if the username and password being entered on a website have been breached and if yes, it will prompt users to immediately change them wherever they are being used. The option is available in Chrome Settings under Sync and Google Services but is being rolled out gradually.

Another notable feature is real-time phishing protection on the desktop, which will now warn users while visiting a malicious site. The feature kicks in when “Make searches and browsing better” setting is enabled in Chrome and is said to work in 30 percent additional cases of malicious website visitations. In addition, a useful new feature called Tab Freezing is being added, which will suspend tabs that you’ve not visited for five minutes to free up RAM and reduce CPU usage. The option is available as an experimental feature and can be enabled via the URL, chrome://flags/#proactive-tab-freeze.

Google is also expanding its predictive phishing protections that currently warns signed in users if they enter their Google Account password into a site that’s suspect of phishing. This feature will now be available for everyone, even when they are not signed in to Chrome and sync is disabled. Furthermore, if you share your device with someone, chances are that there might be different profiles signed into the Chrome browser. With the new update, a new UI is being made available for how profiles are displayed so that users can easily identify whose profile is being used.

Apple release iOS 133 update with better parental controls

Apple has pushed out updates to most of its operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS and tvOS. The latest builds are called iOS 13.3, iPadOS 13.3, WatchOS 6.1.1 and tvOS 13.3. The main feature the update adds to the iPhone and iPad are the new controls introduced in Screen Time.

Apple introduced Screen Time with iOS 13, much to the delight of parents across the world. However, the feature was missing a few key features, some of which are now being introduced. The iOS 13.3 update brings the ability to control who your child can call during the restricted usage hours. Up until now, the phone and message apps were excluded from the restrictions imposed by Screen Time. However, after updating to iOS 13.3, you will find a new option called Screen Time Communication. This feature allows parents to select the contacts who their child can call or message when the phone is in Downtime mode. This limit will apply to the phone app, the messages app and FaceTime.

There is also a major bug fix being shipped with iOS 13.3, which prevents someone from rendering your iOS device unusable thanks to a Denial of Services attack through AirDrop. Initially discovered and reported to Apple in August, the vulnerability would allow an attacker to incessantly send AirDrop request to compatible devices and as soon as you accept or decline the request, another one would pop-up, preventing you from using the phone. Apple has fixed this bug in iOS 13.3 by preventing any further prompts from showing up in the event that you decline a request three times.

Depending on the device you own, you can download the update over the air, except for in the case of an Apple Watch, which requires an iPhone to download the update and ship to the watch.

Reliance Jio scraps Rs 49 JioPhone prepaid recharge, plans now start at Rs 75

There’s a lot going on in the telecom industry right now. The three major telcos, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea recently announced new prepaid plans with increased tariff prices and introduced an FUP on voice calling as well. However, the latter two companies then revised and removed voice calling capping from all of its new plans. Now, Reliance Jio has removed the base recharge plan for JioPhone users, which was priced at Rs 49. While the telco has not released a statement for the move, it can be speculated that the plan was no longer viable for the company.

The now-scrapped Rs 49 JioPhone recharge offered 1GB 4G data, 50 SMSes and unlimited Jio-to-Jio voice calling for 28 days. From now on, JioPhone users will have to opt for the Rs 75 prepaid recharge or higher plans. Jio introduced the Rs 75 prepaid option for JioPhone users back in October this year and it comes with 3GB data and 28-day validity. However, one gets to use merely 0.1GB or 100MB of high-speed data per day, after which their speeds will be down to 64Kbps. The option also offers 500 minutes of calling users on other networks and unlimited Jio-to-Jio calling. It comes with a total of 50SMS.

Speaking of Jio’s All-In-One plans for JioPhone users, the company also introduced three additional plans alongside the Rs 75 pack. There’s one option priced at Rs 125, while the other two are priced at Rs 155 and Rs 185. All three plans come with 500 FUP call minutes and a 28-day validity. However, the Rs 125 prepaid option credits 0.5GB high-speed data per day and 300SMS, while the Rs 155 option comes with 1GB daily data with 100 SMS per day. Finally, the Rs 185 option comes with 2GB data per day, along with 100 daily SMS.

Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile reaches end of life, receives final update

Yesterday officially marked the end of the road for the development of Microsoft Windows for smartphones. As announced by Microsoft approximately one year ago, Windows 10 Mobile reached the end of its life on December 10, 2019. Microsoft released a final software update containing a few key improvements to supported models before closing the chapter on its underachieving mobile operating system. After this, devices running Windows 10 Mobile won’t receive any more security updates or feature improvements.

The final software update (KB4522812) was rolled out devices running Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 (OS Build 15254.600) yesterday. The update contains security patches for basic operations on the phone and external device interaction (game controllers, web cameras, etc.) It also fixes an issue in which Microsoft Store fails to open on some ARM devices. It also includes security patches for Windows Virtualization, Windows Kernel, Windows Peripherals, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows Server.

Though yesterday marked the end of support for Windows 10 Mobile, the Office apps for the platform (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, i.e.) will stay alive and running as usual till January 12, 2021. After that, they will neither receive future updates nor be available for installation from Microsoft Store. This means long-term Windows 10 Mobile users will eventually be forced to switch to an iOS/Android device.

Windows 10 Mobile succeeded Windows Phone 8.1/8/7 in November 2015 but failed to make a mark in the mobile operating system market share. Realising that there was no winning against iOS and Android, Microsoft pulled Windows 10 Mobile from active development in 2017. Microsoft first began making Windows for mobile devices in April 2000 with Pocket PC 2000, which progressively evolved to Windows Mobile in 2003 and then Windows Phone in 2010 and finally Windows 10 Mobile in 2015. Though the series wasn’t always successful, it will always be remembered amongst millennial mobile users.
