Android TV gets Android 10 update with performance and security enhancements

Google has started rolling out Android 10 for Android TV. While the new OS was launched for smartphones back in September, it has now been released for Android TV devices. Unlike smartphones, Android 10 for Android TV doesn’t come with any notable interface-level changes. However, the company says that the new OS version brings the API level 29 alongside security updates and some key performance enhancements that are already available on smartphones running Android 10. Moreover, Google has introduced a new developer-focused Android TV dongle called ADT-3, which is based on Android 10.

The latest development comes from Google’s blog post that highlights new performance and security enhancements that Android 10 update brings to Android TV. The company has also mentioned Project Treble that will bring speedier Android updates to Android TV devices. Google writes, “We're excited to provide faster updates through Project Treble and more secure storage with encrypted user data. TLS 1.3 by default also brings better performance benefits and is up to date with the TLS standard. In addition, Android 10 includes hardening for several security-critical areas of the platform.”

The company is yet to release the rollout schedule. Hence, it is expected that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will bring the Android 10 update to their Android TV devices at their convenience. Also, the Nexus Player is not supported in the new update. Hence, the users of devices such as Nvidia Shield TV will need to wait for the rollout to experience the changes.

Coming to the ADT-3, it is a new streaming dongle running the latest Android TV software. It comes equipped with a quad-core Cortex-A53 SoC, paired with 2GB DDR3 RAM. It also comes with a 4Kp60 HDR HDMI 2.1 output. It is said to help developers design experiences for the new Android TV version and test its features ahead of the public rollout on third-party devices.

The company says that the ADT-3 dongle will be available to developers for purchase through an unspecified OEM partner “in the coming months."
