FTC considering blocking Facebook from integrating Whatsapp, Instagram

The Federal Trade Commission in the US may be gearing up to prevent Facebook from integrating its various services like Whatsapp and Instagram. The FTC’s plan is to file an injunction against Facebook, which would effectively prevent the social media giant from merging its services in any shape or form. According to the report, the injunction could also block Facebook from enforcing its own rules about how third-party apps work with the platform.

In order to block Facebook from merging all its services, the FTC will first need the motion to be approved by a majority of the five-person commission. Once passed, the FTC will then have to file a lawsuit against Facebook and will specifically have to ask the court to impose an injunction on Facebook, which would hold for the duration of the trial. According to the Wall Street Journal, the FTC is expected to begin this process next month.

Facebook’s plans of integrating its various services such as Instagram, Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger had sparked major concerns amongst users and policy makers alike. A merger of these three services would give Facebook access to an unprecedented amount of user data, which the company has a long standing history of abusing in favour of profits. Despite the Cambridge Analytica expose, there’s been very little in the form of legislation to prevent big tech companies from trading in user data. The FTC has been mulling going after big tech, but nothing has yet materialized.

Samuel L Jacksons voice makes its way to Alexa powered devices Not available in India yet

Users in the United States can now install Samuel L Jackson’s voice on their Alexa powered device and yes, he does swear a lot. Well, users will be able to choose between the ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ versions of the famous actors voice. So get ready for a few f-bombs to be dropped when you ask Alexa for the weather. But, if you’re in India, then you’re hard out of luck as the feature has not been rolled out here as yet.

To activate the feature, you will first have to buy the voice pack from Amazon for one dollar. After you’ve bought the pack, you will then have to ask Alexa to activate the voice by saying ,” Alexa, introduce me to Samuel L. Jackson.”. Alexa will then switch to Samuel L. Jackson’s voice and you will be able to ask it a series of specific questions and you’ll get a trademark Samuel L. Jackson answer. If you’re in a region that does not support the feature, Alexa will just tell you that Mr. Jakson is not available here yet and recite a modified version of the Ezekiel speech from Pulp Fiction.

You can find the various questions you can ask the device right here.

Although the feature is slightly limited as of now, as you can only ask it very specific questions and is not compatible with Alexa Skills, shopping, lists etc. According to reports, Amazon is also developing a voice-activated wearable that is currently called ‘Dylan’. The device will be able to detect human emotions so expect Mr. Jackson to give you a piece of his mind when you least feel like it.

WhatsApp will now start suing businesses that flood users with bulk messages

Nobody likes being bombarded with bulk messages. And WhatsApp is taking measures to put an end to the nuisance. The company is considering ways to stop businesses and people from abusing the platform with automated messaging.

While WhatsApp offers a dedicated app for businesses and an API to integrate chatbots and communicate with customers more easily, the company said using the platform to send bulk messages is against its Terms of Service and is considered abuse.

WhatsApp messages are also end-to-end encrypted but despite that, WhatsApp has ways to identify abuse using unencrypted information like  profile photos, date of creation of the account, user reports and more. The company claimed it has already taken down millions of abusive accounts from its platform.

Some still manage to get past WhatsApp’s AI for detecting abuse, so the company will now take legal action against anyone abusing its platform even if it discovers the information outside its platform.

By outside information, WhatsApp means “public claims from companies about their ability to use WhatsApp in ways that violate our Terms.” Companies engaged in abuse of the platform on or beyond December 7, 2019, will be taken to court.

In essence, WhatsApp will now actively look for people and businesses spamming on the platform, so we can all live a little easy.
