Redmi Note 8 Pro, Redmi 7A now receiving MIUI 11 update that adds an always-on display, Mi Doc viewer and more

Two Xiaomi handsets, the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Redmi 7A, are now receiving the new MIUI 11 software update. The new update is being made available for the two phones in batches and the company says all units will receive the update in a few days. Redmi confirmed that MIUI 11 is being made available for the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Redmi 7A in a reply to users’ query on Twitter. The new update brings a host of new updates for the two phones like an always-on display, game booster, Mi Doc Viewer and more. Redmi Note 8 Pro is receiving the MIUI 11.0.3 update.

Redmi 7A and the Redmi Note 8 Pro will also be updated to the November security patch with the update. The new MIUI 11 update brings minimalistic interface design for the phones and enables users to customise ambient display. There will also be a quick reply option for easily reverting to incoming messages, along with a new Mi Share option that will enable sharing files quickly between devices. The file manager is also overhauled with the new MIUI update and it will now show a thumbnail preview for every file. However, it should be noted that the update is based on Android 9 and not Android 10.

The MIUI 11 update for the Redmi 7A and the Redmi Note 8 pro comes soon after the company commenced rolling out the update for Redmi 8, Red\mi 8A and the Redmi 4. Xiaomi recently tweeted that it has rolled out MIUI 11 update for its all its recently launched devices and also for some three year old phones. Xiaomi also noted that 27 of its devices have been updated to MIUI 11 since October 22 and the updates were rolled out in 47 days. However, the company’s latest Android One device, the Mi A3, has surprisingly not received the Android 10 update.

Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio could again increase tariff prices if TRAI decides to set floor pricing for telcos

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has floated a new consultation paper that seeks to regulate tariffs for telecom operators. Currently, telecom operators have the freedom to set tariffs as they please but the intense competition doesn’t allow them to do so. However, the consultation paper titled "Tariff Issues of Telecom Services" explores suggestions on setting a floor price telcos’ services, which means that all telcos will have to adhere to it and price their plans starting at the floor price, if it is set. If TRAI decides to set floor prices for telecom operators, companies like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone-Idea will benefit the most from it since they are struggling to generate revenues with low tarriff prices.

Since Reliance Jio stepped into the telecom sector, it has been forcing rival telcos to lower prices to stay in the compeition. In case a floor price is set, the telco Reliance Jio might be hit the hardest since it won’t be able to reduce tariff prices below a certain point. This move will definitely benefit all the telecom operators irrespectively and the sector’s health might improve, but consumers may end up paying more. TRAI says it received representations from telecom operators about their woes, along with a plea seeking floor tariff fixation by the regulatory authority.

“The Authority (TRAI) has decided to float a consultation paper on the issue so that all the stakeholders in the value chain can get an opportunity to fully participate in the deliberations and give their views on such crucial issues affecting consumer interest,” TRAI mentions in a media release. While the consultation paper has just been introduced, TRAI is inviting written comments from stakeholders on the issue by January 17, 2020 and counter-comments by January 31, 2020. So, at tariff prices can’t be expected to increase due to new floor pricing before February 2020.

Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite leaked renders reveal colour options, support page goes live

Samsung is rumoured to release the Lite variants of its 2019 flagships soon. Now, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite has leaked in renders. The leaked images reveal the phone in multiple colours. It is seen sporting a hole-punch display placed in the top centre of the screen, which is similar to the Galaxy Note10 series. However, things look a bit different at the back. The smartphone is seen to feature an L-shaped camera setup, like the recently launched Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71.

The latest development comes from WinFuture that has leaked renders of the Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite. The renders show the smartphone in three colour options- Black, Red and White with a gradient finish. They also suggest a flat display, unlike the flagship smartphone. The handset is seen sporting a triple rear camera setup. Furthermore, the S Pen matches the colour of the back panel, but in the case of the White gradient colour option, the S Pen is seen sporting a Blue finish.

On the optics front, Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite is said to include a 48MP primary rear camera. Alongside the primary lens, it may come equipped with a wide-angle lens and a macro sensor. The S Pen on the phone is reported to support Bluetooth v5.1 bringing in location-tracking features.

Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite is tipped to go on sale by December 27. The support page of a Samsung phone with model number SM-N770F / DS has gone live on the Samsung Spain website and in a few other countries as well, indicating the phone might go official soon. The same model was also spotted on Geekbench and it is said to be the Galaxy Note10 Lite.

The support page doesn’t reveal any details regarding the launch date and price of the smartphone. However, earlier reports have suggested that the smartphone will cost 609 euros (Rs 47,800 approx).

Samsung Galaxy A01 with 57-inch screen, up to 8GB RAM, 3000mAh battery announced

We may be a couple of weeks away from the new year but that isn’t stopping Samsung from releasing its 2020 smartphones, just in time for the holiday break. Last week, the Korean electronics giant announced the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 in Vietnam. And now, it has quietly announced the Galaxy A01, an entry-level model with up to a whopping 8GB of RAM, dual rear cameras, and a 3000mAh battery. Though Samsung Electronics has not yet revealed the price of the Galaxy A01, we expect it to cost under Rs 10,000 when or if it lands in India.

According to the Galaxy A01’s product page, the handset is powered by an unnamed Octa-core processor. We believe the phone could pack an Exynos 7000-series chipset. RAM options are 6GB and 8GB, which is surprisingly high for a phone of its specs. On-board storage is 128GB and is expandable up to 512GB using a microSD card. The screen is a 5.7-inch Infinity-V unit with HD+ resolution. The inbuilt battery has an average capacity of 3000mAh.

The Samsung Galaxy A01 comes with dual cameras on its back panel, including a 13MP primary sensor with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 2MP depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.4. The selfie camera that’s situated in the tiny notch above the screen is a single 5MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. We expect the handset to run Samsung’s One UI software based on Android 10 right out of the box. Going by its specs, the Galaxy A01 will be positioned close to the Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A10s.

The Galaxy A10, which is currently on sale along with the refreshed Galaxy A10s, costs Rs 7,990 on Flipkart. It packs an Exynos 7884 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable storage space. The Galaxy A01, by contrast, offers up to four times more memory and storage. If Samsung launches the phone in India without bumping these numbers down, then it’s sure to come at a premium. According to Samsung, the Galaxy A01 will be sold in black, blue, and red colours. If there’s even the slightest sign the Galaxy A01 is coming to India, we’ll keep you posted.
