CES 2020: Samsungs Ballie is the cutest robot assistant out there

Ever wondered what a pet of the future would look like? Well, Samsung wants to answer that question with the announcement of the Ballie. A small ball-like robot, the Ballie is the answer to the companion of the future. The robot will follow you around and can also interact with your real-life pets and children as well. We don’t know how something like this will affect the future, but it certainly is worth looking at a robotic companion. The robot will be able to connect with smart devices as well.

At the Samsung Keynote presentation, the Ballie was unveiled by Samsung consumer electronics division CEO H.S. Kim. The Balliw even followed him around, using the onboard camera to track H.S Kim. It also rolled towards him when he called for it, showing us that it has voice recognition capabilities as well. As of right now, the Ballie seems more like a novelty more than an actual tool but this could change in the future. Other companies have also released similar robots but none of them have truly made the impact that they were hoping for.

There was no info as to when the Ballie will be available to the public nor was the price of the robot revealed. Also, remember that this could just be a conceptual project and may not even make it to the assembly line.

Alleged iPhone SE 2 leaked renders tip old design, single rear camera, Touch ID and more

Apple is rumoured to launch the iPhone SE successor - tentatively called the iPhone SE 2 - in 2020. Now, alleged iPhone SE 2 renders have leaked online. The phone is supposed to pack flagship internals in a not-so-flagship level design. The first leak-based renders and 360-degree video of alleged iPhone SE 2 suggest that it will carry the design of iPhone 8, which means it will come with the Touch ID button. Further, the leaks reveal a single rear camera setup.

The latest development comes courtesy of tipster @OnLeaks in collaboration with iGeeksBlog. At first glance, the iPhone SE 2 looks like the iPhone 8. However, there are said to be a few differentiating factors, both internally and externally, to distinguish between the two phones. On the exterior, the iPhone SE 2 is touted to come with a frosted glass finish similar to the one seen on iPhone 11 Pro. The leaked renders suggest that iPhone SE 2 will sport a stainless steel frame that looks like iPhone X’s frame.

iPhone SE 2 is said to come equipped with a 4.7-inch IPS LCD Retina display with a pixel density of around 326 PPI. The phone is likely to borrow its internals from the 2019 iPhones, which means it could be powered by the in-house A13 Bionic processor. While there is no word on other specifications like camera resolution or battery capacity, the renders reveal a single rear camera setup, which suggests it could come with iPhone XR’s imaging hardware. We can also see a circular home button with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor likely to be embedded in it.

iPhone SE 2 is also rumoured to be named as iPhone 9, which suggests it could be more like an iPhone 8 successor than an upgrade to iPhone SE.

OnePlus Concept One shows how disappearing rear cameras could soon be a reality

OnePlus has finally unveiled the Concept One smartphone that was being teased from some time now. While it is a new handset, the first thing about the new concept design by OnePlus is that it employs electrochromic glass technology that effectively hides the rear camera setup. While this technology has been around for a long time, this is the first time it is debuting on a smartphone. As per OnePlus, it took about 18 months for the company to develop the tech for their smartphone and it was challenging to develop it since the glass is 0.35mm thin. The camera is trying to bring it for the masses.

Look ma, disappearing cameras!

OnePlus has successfully managed to eliminate the rear camera setup, and hence the camera bump, with the OnePlus Concept One. This doesn’t mean that the handset doesn’t ship with rear cameras. OnePlus set McLaren 720S’ sunroof as an example, which lets sunlight through when required and can turn opaque to block it. The company used electrochromic technology and moved the cameras inside a glass panel, which is opaque but turns transparent in about 0.7 seconds when the camera app boots up. It is touted to be similar to a physical Natural Density or ND filters that are found on cameras.

The electrochromic glass doesn’t affect the smartphone’s camera performance and considerable time was spent on testing this, OnePlus says. One will also notice the bright McLaren papaya leather finish on the rear panel. The leather finish sports stitching lines as well and it is the same leather as the one used on the McLaren 720S. The handset’s frame is constructed using aluminium alloy frames that undergo PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating so that it’s wear-resistant. OnePlus claims that the Concept One is the first phone to feature a PVD aluminium frame.

Since the new handset is a concept phone, there’s no definite timeline as to when the technology could be made available. However, the possibility of OnePlus employing the new technology on its upcoming handsets definitely exits.
