Samsung could launch Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy Note10 Lite in India on January 25

Samsung, which launched the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note10 series in India last year, appears poised for the launch of two more smartphones in the same series, namely the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note10 Lite. Online reports suggest that the Korean electronics manufacturer could launch both models in the country on January 25, a little ahead of the expected February launch date. These reports also suggest that Samsung's upcoming handsets could be online exclusives.

Well-known online tipster Ishan Agarwal recently revealed on Twitter that Samsung had set January 25 as the official launch date for the Galaxy Note10 Lite. “Not sure if the S10 lite will be launched on the same day but it should. S10 lite might be an Online Exclusive device. Sales and Prebooking in Feb,” Agarwal wrote in his tweet. This information, though not communicated officially by Samsung, seems legitimate when we consider the fact that Flipkart tagged the Galaxy S10 Lite as a ‘Flipkart Unique’ product on its newly launched microsite. You can read more about that here.

As the names suggest, both upcoming ‘Lite’ phones will be toned-down versions of their parent models in the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note10 series. Even so, they are both expected to be powered by Qualcomm's flagship-grade Snapdragon 855 chip with up to 8GB of RAM on board. Samsung's dedicated microsite reveals that the Galaxy S10 Lite has a triple camera setup on its back panel in which the primary sensor is a 48MP unit with optical image stabilisation, the second is a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and the third is a 5MP macro sensor. A single LED flash accompanies the three rear shooters.

Details of Samsung's upcoming ‘Lite’ models have been flowing in for quite some time now from unofficial but mostly reliable sources. But now, Samsung confirms in its dedicated microsite that the Galaxy Note10 Lite will sport a 6.7-inch Infinity-O display with an on-screen fingerprint scanner, a 4500mAh battery with fast charging, and a triple rear camera setup in which all three sensors (wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto) are of 12MP resolution with varying apertures. With any luck, we should definitely see the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note10 Lite go live in the Indian smartphone market before the month is over.

Seems like the Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite India Launch date has been set, it’s 25th January based on early info that I’m receiving. Not sure if the S10 lite will be launched on the same day but it should. S10 lite might be an Online Exclusive device. Sales and Prebooking in Feb. pic.twitter.com/vKx3ebMuGT

CES 2020: Google Assistant gets a slew of new features

Google has made a few announcements for Google Assistant at CES 2020. The company also revealed that the voice assistant is now available on more than 1 billion devices, and is used by more than 500 million people every month. Google Assistant is active on a range of devices including smart speakers, phones, TVs, cars, smart displays. Here are all the new features coming to Google Assistant in the smart device near you this year.

Webpage Reading

The company has previewed the ability to read long-form articles out loud using Google Assistant. A user needs to say “Hey Google, read it” or “Hey Google, read this page” and the assistant will read the page that’s on the screen. According to Google, this experience is unlike traditional screen readers as it is built on “new voice datasets to create more expressive and more natural sounding voices.” Moreover, the content can be translated into 42 languages, including Hindi, German or Spanish. The feature will be made available on Android phones later this year on Android version 5 and above.

Scheduled Actions

Basically, Scheduled Actions will let users ask their Google Assistant to do a task in the future. For example, users can ask Google Assistant to turn on/ off or start/ stop compatible devices at the time of their choosing - “Hey Google, run the coffee maker at 6 am” and the connected smart device should do the task at the mentioned time. This feature is rolling out later this year as well. It will let users control more than 20 new devices, including AC units, air purifiers, bathtubs, coffee makers, vacuums and more, from the Google Home app.

Expansion of Interpreter Mode

Announced at CES last year, interpreter mode allows a smart device powered by Google Assistant to translate a conversation between two people, each speaking a different language. The company says more businesses have committed to using it this year. The feature will expand to new public places like airports, airport lounges, banks, organisations managing live sporting events, organizations aiding humanitarian efforts, hospitality management, and more hotels.

Sticky Notes

This feature is aimed at smart displays. It will add the ability to create household notes on the screen for members of the house to see the tasks done before you left. For instance, a user can say, “Hey Google, leave a note that says I already fed Max breakfast,” and it will be displayed on the smart display as a sticky note. It can be created by anyone without the need to sign in. It is scheduled to roll out later this year. Speed Dial

Similar to Sticky Notes feature, Speed Dial will enable Google Assistant users to set up speed dial contacts to quickly and easily make calls. Anyone can create pre-set contact easily. It is scheduled to roll out later this year as well.

Focus on Privacy Settings

With each update, Google focuses on adding more and more privacy-related features. This time it has made some privacy-related tweaks to Google Assistant, and users will easily be able to access privacy controls via the voice assistant. For instance, users can ask questions like, “how do you keep my information private?”

While Google Assistant isn’t supposed to record anything you say unless you start the sentence with “Hey Google,” there are times when the Assistant gets activated when it is not meant to, like while watching TV or a YouTube video. With that in mind, users will now be able to say “Hey Google, that wasn’t for you” to have it wipe its history of the last thing they said.

Unlike Airtel, Reliance Jio VoWiFi service works with all WiFi networks across India

Soon after the report of Reliance Jio secretly rolling out VoWiFi service broke out, the company went ahead and officially announced the service. VoWiFi calling enables users to place voice calls over a WiFi network and this comes in handy when you are in an area with weak cellular connectivity. The option will now be available for all Jio users and the notable highlight is that Jio’s VoWiFI service works over any WiFi network, unlike Airtel’s that only works when one is connected to Airtel Xstream Fiber broadband service. Here’s all you need to know about the new Jio VoWiFi service.

When one uses WiFi calling, their balance will still be deducted as it is treated as a regular voice call. Some data is also consumed from the WiFi network one is connected to while using the service and as per Jio, less than half MB per minute will be used during voice calls but more will be used while placing video calls. To enable Jio WiFi service, users need to head over to the Settings menu of their phone and search for Wi-Fi calling option. Tap on the toggle to enable it and one should be able to place calls over WiFi when their cell network reception is weak.

A handset will automatically switch between VoWiFi and VoLTE while on a call for a better overall experience, says Jio. While VoWiFi is generally used for voice calls, Jio says its users will also be able to use it for video calling. The Jio WiFi calling service will be made available across India between January 7 to January 16.

Jio has rolled out its VoWiFi service for 155 handsets and you can check whether your phone is compatible here. The company will also roll out its VoWiFi service Internationally in the next few weeks, which is advertised to be a “price disruptor” and beneficial for postpaid consumers. One condition that needs to be met for availing Jio’s VoWiFi service is a compatible smartphone with an active Jio tariff plan.

CES 2020: MediaTek Dimensity 800 7nm SoC with built-in 5G for mid-range devices announced

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chipset for flagship devices was announced in November last year. Now, the company has announced a Dimensity SoC for mid-range devices. MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC comes with built-in 5G. It uses 7nm process technology, which is same as the Dimensity 1000. However, the Dimensity 800 features four Cortex-A76 cores operating up to 2GHz and four power-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores operating at up to 2.0GHz.

“MediaTek already launched its flagship 5G smartphone solution, the Dimensity 1000, and with the 800 series 5G chipset family, we are bringing 5G to the mid-tier and mass market,” said TL Lee, head of MediaTek’s wireless business unit. “Everyone should have access to great technology. The Dimensity 800 Series will power the New Premium segment for 5G, bringing consumers flagship smartphone features and performance at midrange price points.”

MediaTek Dimensity 800 chipset supports 5G two carrier aggregation (2CC CA), which is touted to give it 30 percent wider high-speed layer coverage, more seamless 5G handover, and higher average throughput performance compared to other solutions, with a single carrier (1CC, no CA). The Dimensity 800 SoC is designed to support stand-alone and non-stand alone (SA/NSA) sub-6GHz networks. It includes multi-mode support for every cellular connectivity generation from 2G to 5G.

MediaTek Dimensity 800 series supports 64MP cameras sensors or large multi-camera options such as 32+16MP dual cameras. It includes support for features such as AI-autofocus, auto exposure, high-dynamic-range (AI HDR),  auto white balance, noise reduction, and dedicated facial detection hardware, alongside the world’s first multi-frame 4K video HDR capability (Video HDR). It also has support for Full HD+ displays up to 90Hz refresh rate.

The Dimensity 800 SoC comes equipped with MediaTek AI Processing Unit — APU 3.0, which is said to have more than double the performance of the previous generation APU. Further, it brings a performance boost at 2.4TOPS, compared to 4.5 TOPS in Dimensity 1000.

MediaTek Dimensity 800 is already shipping to OEMs. The first Dimensity powered devices will start hitting the market in the first half of 2020.
