5G trials in India may be delayed as Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea seek more time to submit proposals

Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea are reportedly seeking a deadline extension from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for submissions of their proposals for conducting 5G field trials. For reference, the deadline to submit the proposal was January 10, but the telcos haven’t come up with their proposals. This could lead to a delay in 5G trials in India.

On December 31, DoT asked telecom operators to submit their proposal for conducting 5G trials and gave a deadline of 10 days (till January 10). Since the deadline is almost here and the telcos haven’t submitted their proposals, it is likely that 5G trials in India will be delayed. The top 3 telecom operators in the country are looking to seek deadline extension from DoT.

The information comes from an unidentified senior official who told ET that a lot of documentation and many details are yet to be ascertained, which is not possible by January 10. As a result, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) will write a formal letter to DoT this week seeking a deadline extension. However, the telcos and COAI have not yet fixed the deadline they are seeing from the DoT.

Leading up to the announcement of the deadline, there was a debate if Chinese telecom gear makers like Huawei and ZTE should be allowed to participate in the 5G trials, but the government has now cleared Huawei and ZTE to take part in India’s 5G trials. That said, Vodafone is likely to pick Ericsson and Huawei as its partners to conduct 5G trials. On the other hand, Airtel is said to pick Nokia, Huawei and Ericsson to conduct the same. Further, Reliance Jio is expected to carry forward its major partnership with Samsung to test 5G network in India.

5G trials in India are expected to take place in the first half of 2020.

TikTok fixes vulnerability that allowed hackers full control over user accounts

TikTok has confirmed that it has fixed a vulnerability that allowed hackers to manipulate content, upload unauthorized videos, make private ‘hidden’ videos public, delete videos, and extract confidential information of users via an SMS containing a malicious link. The company says most of the fixes were on the back-end and users are recommended to update their apps to the latest version to be on the safe side.

A Check Point Research report revealed the bug by mentioning it in a blog post. The bug allowed potential hackers to send an SMS message to a mobile number on behalf of TikTok. While the functionality is available on the official TikTok website to let users download the app, hackers could capture HTTP request using a proxy tool and spoof a message that contained harmful links. The link could redirect users to a malicious website, launching Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF), and Sensitive Data Exposure attacks.

The report also notes that TikTok employed an unconventional JSONP callback, which allows to request data from API servers without CORS and SOP restrictions. As a result, data could be stolen by initiating an AJAX request. Thankfully, Check Point Research informed TikTok about the vulnerability before making the findings public.

Luke Deshotels from TikTok Security Team said, “TikTok is committed to protecting user data. Like many organisations, we encourage responsible security researchers to privately disclose zero-day vulnerabilities to us. Before public disclosure, CheckPoint agreed that all reported issues were patched in the latest version of our app. We hope that this successful resolution will encourage future collaboration with security researchers.”

CES 2020: Samsung, SanDisk announce new innovative portable SSDs

With portable SSDs (solid-state drives) gradually gaining more popularity amongst hard drives in the portable storage devices market, we’re beginning to see some more innovation creep into this space. Samsung, for example, announced at CES 2020, a new portable SSD with a fingerprint reader integrated into its enclosure for added security. SanDisk, on the other hand, showed off its most capacious portable SSD yet, which boasts 8TB of storage space. SanDisk also announced a USB-C flash drive with 1TB of storage space on board as well.

Samsung T7 Touch

Samsung’s new SSD is called the T7 Touch. According to the Korean electronics manufacturer, it features the fastest data transfer speeds currently available, thanks to the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard. It can deliver a read speed of 1,050MB/s and a write speed of 1,000MB/s, which the company claims is 9.5 times faster than what a typical external hard drive can manage. Resembling a compact card case and weighing 58g, the T7 Touch comes with a tiny square fingerprint reader on the top side of its aluminium enclosure, which works on top of standard password protection and AES 256-bit hardware encryption.

Samsung says its T7 Touch SSD is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Android devices alike, which means it will work with compatible Android smartphones. The drive comes with a USB-C-to-C and a USB-A-to-C cable. One will have to use the bundled Samsung Portable SSD Software 1.0 to enable fingerprint-based protection. The SSD sports a ‘Motion LED’ around the fingerprint reader to show drive status. Available from this month on in over 30 countries in black and silver colour options, the Samsung T7 Touch comes in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities at a starting price of $129.99 (Rs 8,965 approx).

SanDisk 8TB SSD Prototype, Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type-C

SanDisk’s parent company Western Digital showcased a number of new storage devices at CES this year but the most notable of them is the new SanDisk 8TB SSD prototype. It looks and feels like any other SanDisk portable SSD but it sports 8TB of storage space on board, which is the highest capacity available on any portable SSD in the world so far. To give you some perspective, SanDisk’s current crop of portable SSDs—the SanDisk Extreme and SanDisk Extreme Pro—tops out at a maximum capacity of 2TB. Unfortunately, SanDisk is not ready to release its new 8TB SSD prototype in the market just yet.

SanDisk also announced at CES 2020, a 1TB variant of its USB-C flash drive, the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type-C. As the name suggests, the drive has a USB-C connector on one end and a USB-A connector on the other. This makes it compatible with smartphones and PCs alike. A pivoting metal cap protects one of the two ports at any given time. The flash drive employs the USB 3.1 standard, which means you can expect a sequential read speed of up to 150MB/s. The SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe USB Type-C with 1TB of storage capacity is currently on sale and costs $249.99 (Rs 17,240 approx).

OnePlus 5, 5T OxygenOS 9010 update brings December 2019 security patch

OnePlus is no slouch when it comes to pushing the latest updates to its handsets. The smartphone manufacturer has a notable three-year update plan for all of its devices, which consists of two years of major Android updates and security patches followed by one year of security patches. OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are now receiving the OxygenOS 9.0.10 update under the company’s update scheme, which brings the December 2019 Android security patches for both the phones. As always, this new patch is an incremental update that will be slowly rolled out to all OnePlus 5/5T units.

The new patch doesn't add any new features to the two handsets and only brings the December security update, along with system stability improvement and general bug fixes. While most users should automatically receive a notification for the update, one can also perform a force check. Head over to Settings and search for System Update and click on check for updates option to force check the update. “This OTA will have a staged rollout, the OTA will be received by a limited number of users today and will have a broader rollout in a few days after making sure there are no critical bugs,” OnePlus says in its blog post.

In other OnePlus news, the company recently unveiled the OnePlus Concept One smartphone at CES 2020. The new handset is a concept that features disappearing rear camera setup, thanks to the electrochromic glass technology that is used on the glass over the rear cameras.  As per OnePlus, it took about 18 months for the company to develop the tech for their smartphone and it was challenging since the glass is only 0.35mm thin. The company needs to test it out further, in order to get it ready for the mass market, so it's still in the concept phase at this point. You can read in-depth about the OnePlus Concept One here.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 could be powered by last years Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC

Samsung is expected to introduce a new foldable smartphone - tentatively called the Galaxy Fold 2 - at their Unpacked 2020 event on February 11. The smartphone is tipped to feature huge design changes from the first-gen Galaxy Fold. It is rumoured to drop the first-gen Galaxy Fold aesthetics in favour of a Motorola Razr (2019)-like clamshell form factor. Now, a new report as allegedly revealed more information about the upcoming device.

According to a report from MySmartPrice, Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 could be powered by a generation-old Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. Further, tipster Ishan Agarwal tweeted Galaxy Fold 2 will get the Snapdragon 855 SoC in all regions. For reference, Galaxy Fold 2 is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy S20/Galaxy S11 series, which is tipped to be powered by the latest silicon - Snapdragon 865 chipset.

Moreover, Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 is tipped to sport a 10MP selfie shooter, which is likely to borrow its hardware from the 10MP selfie camera on the Galaxy Note10. Unlike the original Galaxy Fold, Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 is said to turn to ultra-thin glass as the display covering. Industry insiders say that using ultra-thin glass would make mass production of such panels even more expensive than they are at the moment.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 is said to reduce, if not eliminate, the crease. The next Samsung foldable phone is rumoured to be made available for sale "immediately" after its official unveiling. However, whether or not it will go on sale in markets outside South Korea before the end of February is not yet known.

Samsung Galaxy S20/Galaxy S11 trio is expected to come in 6.2/6.4 inches, 6.7 inches, 6.9 inches display sizes. More rumours are expected to reveal the specifications of upcoming smartphones leading up to the February 11 event.
