Airtels VoWiFi service updated to work with all broadband WiFi connections and in select additional cities

Competition in the telecom industry is heating up. While the competition is well reflected with the introduction of new plans, and constant offers to woo customers, Airtel and Reliance Jio seem to be battling it out over a new feature, VoWiFi. Airtel first rolled out the Voice over WiFi service for its consumers and Jio soon followed suit. The option enables a user to place calls over WiFi instead of the cellular network but Airtel’s VoWiFi calling was restricted to Airtel Xstream Fiber broadband connection. Now, the telco has updated its website to reflect that the service works on every broadband WiFi.

Airtel has also updated its website and included some new cities where VoWiFi calling will now be available. Airtel users residing in Delhi NCR, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, UP(West), Maharashtra, Mumbai, Kolkata, UP (East), Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh can now avail calling over WiFi. This announcement by Airtel came soon after Jio officially announced that it has enabled VoWiFi calling for its consumers. Unlike Airtel, Jio’s VoWiFi calling service debuted without any broadband WiFi restrictions. In addition, Jio users can also place video calls, along with voice calls, when connected to a WiFi network.

It should be noted that their balance will be deducted since VoWiFi call is also counted as a regular call. The new option will most likely be useful for consumers who can’t get decent cell signals but can access a good WiFi connection. For availing VoWiFi calling, one simply needs a compatible handset and an active plan on their SIM connection. Some handsets also receive VoWiFi calling functionality after a software update and we suggest you update your handset and then search for the feature in settings.

As mentioned above, Jio recently enabled VoWiFi service for its users. The feature is currently available for 155 handsets and is said to soon be made available for more devices. The company will also enable the WiFi calling service internationally in the coming weeks.

Realme 2 Pro gets dark mode shortcut and more in January 2020 security patch

Realme 2 Pro users have a new reason to jump for joy as their smartphone is poised to receive a new software update. The over-the-air update, which should be downloaded automatically in the background, carries the latest Android security patch dated January 2020. It also comes with a couple of improvements to the handset’s user interface. If you’re a Realme 2 Pro user, you should see the update notification pop up in the next few days. If you still don’t see it, you can always head to Settings > System & updates > Software update and tap ‘Check for updates’ when connected to the internet.

Codenamed ‘RMX1801EX_11_C.26’, the new ColorOS 6.0 software update weighs in at 2.71GB. It does not contain an Android version upgrade from Android 9 Pie to Android 10 but it does introduce a few noticeable software improvements. For example, you can now toggle dark mode from the shortcut icons in the notification panel. You can also tap a blank area in the recents screen to go back to the app launcher. What’s more, Realme has added a ‘flash on call’ feature, which, when enabled in Settings, will flash the handset’s torchlight every time you receive a call. It should prove to be useful when you’re trying to find your ringing phone in a pile of clothes on the sofa.

The Realme 2 Pro is an entry-level smartphone that’s currently on sale in the Indian market for a starting price of Rs 8,999. The handset received an upgrade to Android 9 Pie in mid-2019 but has yet to receive an upgrade to Android 10. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 AIE chip, the Realme 2 Pro is available in the following RAM + storage variants: 4GB RAM + 64GB storage, 6GB RAM + 64GB storage, and 8GB RAM + 128GB storage. It also comes in three different colour options, namely Ice Lake, Blue Ocean, and Black Sea.

The Realme 2 Pro features a 6.3-inch Full HD+ display with a ‘dewdrop frame’, which means there’s a tiny circular notch at the top of the screen to house the single 16MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture. On the back, there’s a Sony IMX398 16MP primary sensor with an f/1.7 aperture and a 2MP depth sensor with an f/2.4 aperture along with a circular fingerprint scanner. Powering the package is a 3500mAh internal battery with 10W charging. If you’d like, you can read our review of the Realme 2 Pro here.

Realme TV may be in development, could launch in 2020: Report

Lately, Realme has been expanding its product portfolio in India and China. The company already sells mobile phones, accessories, power banks and earphones. Now, it is rumoured that Realme could be exploring various possibilities to enter the TV market with its smart TVs. It is said to compete with home-grown rival Xiaomi that sells Mi TVs, which dominates the budget smart TV market in India. Realme has also teased the launch of its IoT devices later this year and the smart TVs are expected to be launched around that time only.

The latest development comes from CMO Xu Qi Chase who revealed at the launch of Realme X50 5G that the company will launch its TV category in 2020. However, Realme was rumoured to launch its first smart TV by the end of 2019, but that didn’t happen. The Realme TVs are expected to offer similar features as Xiaomi’s Mi TV range.

Realme is tipped to launch various TVs with different specifications.  It is likely to run Android TV to deliver a full-fledged smart TV experience along with a wide-enough app support. For reference, Xiaomi recently launched the Mi TV 5 series in China which offers features like QLED panel, latest hardware and affordable pricing. Also, the Mi 5 Pro features a Quantum Dot display that comes with 8K video support.

Realme CEO Madhav Sheth has also teased to bring a range of connected devices. The company is also rumoured to launch a fitness band. Recently, Realme also forayed into the wireless earphones category with the launch of Realme Buds Air. The company also launched its first 5G smartphone, Realme X50 5G this week.
