Mercedes-Benz to unveil EQC all-electric SUV in India on January 14

With the world turning to electric mobility solutions, Mercedes-Benz wants to show that it too is committed to the game—and how! The well-known German automaker is planning to announce its recently created electric vehicle sub-brand EQ in India on January 14. But that's not all. The company will also unveil the Mercedes-Benz EQC all-electric SUV on the same day, for the first time in India. As it's still not ready for production, the Mercedes-Benz EQC will most likely go on sale only later in the year.

Based on the platform of the Mercedes-Benz X253 GLC-Class, the Mercedes-Benz EQC is an all-electric compact luxury SUV. The EQC 400 4MATIC model comes with an asynchronous electric motor fitted on either axle. Drawing power from an 80kWh battery pack with 384 lithium-ion cells, the EQC delivers a WLTP-tested range of 417 kilometres on a single charge. Merc says the EQC can go from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 5.1 seconds and max out at 180 kilometres per hour.

On the inside, the Mercedes-Benz EQC features two 10.25-inch touchscreen panels that are placed side by side to act as the instrument cluster and central dashboard display. The audio setup is handled by an exclusive Burmester Surround-Sound system. Like its brethren, the EQC is powered by the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which, in addition to touch inputs, recognises voice inputs made by the user. The integrated digital assistant can be asked to dial a phone number or set the air-con temperature by preceding the command with the phrase, ‘Hey Mercedes’.

We saw the Mercedes-Benz EQC first at the 2018 Paris Motor Show but this is the first time we'll be seeing it in India. According to Autocar India, Mercedes-Benz will launch the EQC in the country later in the year. With any luck, this Merc could exist for a while the first and only luxury EV in the country before BMW India decides to launch the Mini Electric in 2021. The EV space in India was recently populated by the Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EV. It is said to be joined by the more affordable Maruti Suzuki Wagon R EV sometime soon.

CES 2020: Samsung Galaxy Bloom could be companys next foldable phone, Galaxy S11 series may be renamed to Galaxy S20

Samsung unveiled the smart robot Ballie, a new Galaxy Chromebook, new MicroLED, QLED 8K and Lifestyle TVs, and more at CES 2020. While all of these were public announcements, it seems like the company held a covert meeting with telecom partners on the sidelines of the largest consumer tech show. As per a Korean media outlet, Samsung held a meeting in secret where it showcased some of its unannounced smartphones, one of which is a foldable phone that will apparently be called the 'Galaxy Bloom.' Samsung Mobile chief DJ Koh is said to have been present at the meeting and he reportedly confirmed that the Galaxy S11 lineup will be renamed to the Galaxy S20 series.

Starting with Samsung’s next foldable phone, its name is apparently inspired by the cosmetics company Lancome’s powder compact. This makes sense given that the upcoming foldable phone by Samsung is rumoured to fold into a squarish form factor. Previous reports dubbed the device like the Galaxy Fold 2 but as per the report, it could be officially announced as the Galaxy Bloom. The smartphone manufacturer is also said to target female customers in their 20s with the look and design of the phone and the moniker. The foldable phone will be announced in 5G and 4G variants, the report suggests.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S20 series, there could be three phones announced in the lineup. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, Galaxy S20 Ultra and the standard Galaxy S20. The foldable Galaxy Bloom and the Samsung Galaxy S20 phones might also support 8K video recording, which could be a first for the smartphone industry. The report suggests Samsung and Google are teaming up, and YouTube will enable 8K video support when the next Galaxy phones are announced. Reports making the rounds on the internet suggest that the next Samsung Galaxy smartphone launch will take place on February 11. As a word of caution, we suggest that you take this report with a pinch of salt as the company has not confirmed anything yet.

Flipkart quietly launches Falkon Aerbook Thin and Light Laptop starting at Rs 39,990

Flipkart, which is one of the few e-commerce websites one generally thinks of while planning to buy a new laptop, has quietly launched its own laptop under the ‘MarQ by Flipkart’ brand. Called Falkon Aerbook, Flipkart’s new laptop is a Thin and Light model with a 13.3-inch screen and an Intel 8th Gen Core i5 CPU. It will be available on Flipkart from January 17 for a starting price of Rs 39,990. It will join the fifteen other product categories Flipkart sells under the MarQ name, including refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners.

According to Flipkart, the Falkon Aerbook measures 16.5 millimetres in thickness and weighs 1.26 kilogrammes. Its screen is a 13.3-inch Full HD unit. This puts it squarely in the Thin and Light laptop segment that’s currently populated by laptops from Apple, Microsoft, Asus, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, and HP. The Falkon Aerbook is powered by an Intel 8th Gen Core i5 CPU with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of solid-state storage, which can be expanded to a maximum of 1TB thanks to a secondary solid-state drive slot. The laptop also features a precision touchpad for multi-finger gestures. With its 37Wh internal battery, it promises up to 5 hours of continuous use on a single charge.

The Falkon Aerbook is backed by after-sales support from Flipkart, which says customers will receive doorstep support for part replacements and technical assistance in addition to 12/7 call centre-support from 9am to 9pm. The company has, however, not mentioned the warranty period attached to every Falkon Aerbook sold. The Indian e-commerce giant appears to be confident of seeing success in the laptop market even though the Falkon Aerbook is its first ever PC product. We at Digit should be able to comment on various technical aspects of the Falkon Aerbook after receiving a review unit.

“The laptop industry is a Rs. 10,000 crore market in India. Customers are increasingly shopping online for laptops, and over the next two years online penetration of the category is expected to grow to 53%. The Thin & Light (TnL) segment (

Audio-Technica takes on Apple AirPods Pro with the ATH-ANC300TW truly wireless earphones

Truly wireless earphones offer another level of freedom from wires and have been around for quite some time now. Apple basically pushed the category further with the AirPods but there are many other companies like Sennheiser, Bose, Samsung, among others, who offer competing truly wireless earphones. Audio-Technica is known for manufacturing great audio products but it didn’t have a truly wireless earphone in its arsenal, till now. The company announced its ATH-ANC300TW truly wireless earbuds at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2020), which will go up against the likes of Apple AirPods Pro, Sony WF-1000MX3, Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless earphones, and others.

ATH-ANC300TW True specifications

Audio Technica has used Dynamic 5.8mm drivers on the ATH-ANC300TW truly wireless earphones. The device has a touted frequency response between 20 and 25,000 Hz, which is quite standard, and a sensitivity of 106 dB/mW. Impedance of the earphones is 14ohms and it is advertised to deliver about 4.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. The charging case is said to provide about 13.5 hours of total playback. Charging time of the headphones is about 1 hour while the case takes 2.5 hours to charge completely. The charging case supports charging over Type-C.

The earbuds feature an MEMS type microphone that sport -32 dB sensitivity and a frequency response between 50 – 10,000 Hz. The mics feature an omnidirectional polar pattern setting and should be able to pick up sound in a 360-degree radius.

ATH-ANC300TW True Wireless features

The new ATH-ANC300TW True Wireless earphones by Audio-Technica are claimed to deliver the same sound signature we have come to expect from the company’s audio devices. The earphones also support Active Noise Cancellation, thanks to the digital hybrid noise-cancelling technology that it comes equipped with. The company is advertising QuietPoint ambient noise reduction technology on the earbuds, which basically function by enabling two mics in each earbud to pick up and cancel environmental noise by feeding it to the digital noise-cancelling processor.

The ATH-ANC300TW truly wireless earphones feature multifunction buttons for controlling music playback and handling calls. There’s also a quick hear-through feature to pause the music and amplify external noise so that you can hear what is happening around you without taking the earphones out. The earphones also connect with the Audio-Technica Connect app and enable control of various settings, including access to three noise-cancelling modes. There’s an Airplane mode that targets constant low-frequency noise, then there’s On-the-Go mode which suppresses street noise. The Office/Study mode cancels out the noise in quiet environments.

ATH-ANC300TW True Wireless price

The Audio-Technica ATH-ANC300TW true wireless earphones are priced at $229 (Rs 16,299 approx).

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 to have larger screen, global NFC support: Report

If you've been on the fence about getting the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 because it doesn't have NFC-based payment support outside China, then you might want to wait for the next model. According to a report by TizenHelp, the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will feature NFC globally for tap-and-pay transactions with support for apps like Google Pay. What's more, it will feature a larger screen than its predecessor. Xiaomi is expected to launch the Mi Band 5 first in its home country of China in June this year, followed by other markets like India.

The outgoing Xiaomi Mi Band 4 supports NFC-based transactions but only in China. According to the report, Xiaomi will enable NFC in the global version of the Mi Band 5, which should allow the user to authorise payment apps such as Google Pay to carry out tap-and-pay transactions at supported check-out counters. In addition, the Mi Band 5 is reported to get a larger 1.2-inch AMOLED colour touchscreen panel with increased contrast, which should improve legibility of text under direct sunlight.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 4 (aka Mi Smart Band 4), which is currently on sale in India for Rs 2,299, features a 0.95-inch AMOLED colour touchscreen panel with a resolution of 120 x 240 pixels and a maximum brightness of 400 nits. It's powered by a 135mAh rechargeable battery, which Xiaomi claims is good for up to 20 days of continuous use. The band is water-resistant for up to 50 metres and equipped to recognise strokes while swimming. It also comes with an inbuilt heart monitor.

The Mi Band series of smart wearables is easily one of Xiaomi's biggest hits across the globe. Since the launch of the original Mi Band in July 2014, the series has been receiving new features and improvements with each passing model. Xiaomi recently introduced the more affordable Mi Smart Band 3i in India at Rs 1,299 to serve as a replacement to the equally popular Mi Band HRX Edition. Compared to the Mi Band 4, the Mi Smart Band 3i sports a smaller 0.78-inch monochrome AMOLED display with a maximum brightness of 300 nits. Sadly, it lets the heart monitor go to stay wallet-friendly. Read more about it here.
