Researchers have developed the worlds first living robots from the cells of a frog

We’ve all seen movies where fantastical nanomachines perform a number of tasks that are seemingly impossible. Well, hold on to your seats as scientists have created the world’s first self-healing robots that can be classified as 'living robots'. Created using the stem cells of the Africa clawed frog, these ‘living robots’ are incredibly tiny and are small enough to even travel in a human body. These robots can even ‘walk’, swim, and even function without any kind of food for weeks.

In a somewhat terrifying revelation, the University of Vermont has claimed that these robots are ‘entirely new life-forms’. The implications of this statement means that we as humans, are playing god. Stem cells were scraped off a frog embryo and then reshaped and designed by a supercomputer to fit specific body forms. These cells then began to work on their own and can even self-heal. A researcher cut into one of these cells and to their surprise, it began to heal itself and just kept moving. Joshua Bongard, lead researcher at the University of Vermont said, “These are novel living machines. They're neither a traditional robot nor a known species of animal. It's a new class of artifact: a living, programmable organism."

Scientists working on the project have also said that these robots are much safer than traditional robots as they’re environmentally friendly and much safer for the human body. These robots, dubbed Xenobots can perform a variety of tasks such as cleaning up radioactive waste, plastics from the oceans, deliver medication into the human body and even travel through human arteries to flush out plaque and the like.

Future applications of these robots could also include helping scientists learn more about the human body and help with human health and longevity. Could this be the beginning of a golden age of medicine for humanity? We don’t know for sure, but we will keep you posted.

Stay tuned to Digit for more interesting stories like this one.

Mercedes-Benz EQC with 417km range to come to India in April 2020

With mainstream automakers like Tata Motors and MG Motor lining themselves up at the start line for the big EV race in India, Mercedes-Benz has also took its first step. The German auto giant officially announced its recently created electric vehicle sub-brand called EQ ("Electric Intelligence") in India yesterday. It also confirmed that the Mercedes-Benz EQC— the first electric car under the EQ portfolio—would be launched in April this year. The Mercedes-Benz EQC is an all-electric compact luxury SUV with an estimated driving range of 417 kilometres on a single charge.

According to the press release sent by the company, Mercedes-Benz is launching the EQ sub-brand (and eventually the EQC, of course) in India as part of its ‘Sustainable Luxury’ initiative. The company also plans to install over 4,000 solar panels at its Chakan plant in Maharashtra with the aim of bringing CO2 consumption down by 2,600 tonnes. By the end of the first quarter, 45 per cent of the plant’s energy requirement is expected to come from renewable resources. The company says its cars are already 85 per cent recyclable and 95 per cent recoverable.

At yesterday’s announcement, the company also unveiled the EQC Edition 1886, which is a special edition of the EQC created to commemorate the year in which Karl Benz received his patent for the first practical automobile. “We felt the time was right to introduce EQ brand in India and our first product for India will be the EQC EV. We are confident that EQ will lay a strong foundation for our electric ambition in India, which will see further expansion of our green cars portfolio and also for our future,” commented Martin Schwenk, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-Benz India.

The Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC model comes with an asynchronous electric motor fitted on either axle. Drawing power from an 80kWh battery pack with 384 lithium-ion cells, the EQC delivers a WLTP-tested range of 417 kilometres on a single charge. Merc says the EQC can go from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 5.1 seconds and max out at 180 kilometres per hour. On the inside, the car sports  two 10.25-inch touchscreen panels that are placed side by side to act as the instrument cluster and central dashboard display. Like other modern Merc cars, the EQC is powered by the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which, in addition to touch inputs, recognises voice inputs made by the user. Samsung Galaxy S20 series may not support 120Hz display refresh rate above FHD resolution

Samsung Galaxy S20 series is all set to launch on February 11 and the leaks keep piling on. Each day, new information regarding the Galaxy S20 devices is making the rounds in the rumour mill. Now, a new leak has revealed that Samsung won’t allow users to set the 120Hz refresh rate mode while the display resolution is set to QHD+. The only available options could be FHD at 60Hz, QHD+ at 60Hz and FHD at 120Hz.

The latest development comes from tipster Ice Universe, who took Twitter to reveal that Samsung will not let users set 120 Hz mode at WQHD, “ leaving only FHD 60Hz, FHD 120Hz, WQHD 60Hz.” Having 120 Hz at WQHD would certainly take a toll on the battery life of the handsets. Hence, Samsung may cap the high refresh rate to the lower resolution. However, take this news with a pinch of salt as it is all speculation, at this point.

Further, a report from XDA-Developers claims that Samsung Galaxy S20 series may feature an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. While there were rumours of Samsung ditching the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in favour of an optical fingerprint scanner. It may not be true. Moreover, it says Samsung Galaxy S20+ will be the first S-series flagship without a headphone jack. Galaxy S20+ is also rumoured to support 25W fast charging with the same system as the Note10.

Earlier reports have claimed that Samsung Galaxy S20+ could use 2.5D glass instead of Samsung’s usual curved glass. Samsung is rumoured to use a custom 108MP primary lens on the most premium Galaxy S20 device. The Galaxy S20 trio is expected to come in 6.2/6.4 inches, 6.7 inches, 6.9 inches display sizes.

Samsung may also launch its next foldable device, the Galaxy Z Flip alongside the Galaxy S20 series on February 11.
