Microsoft introduces new Edge browser based on Chromium

Roughly a year after announcing its decision to switch to the open-source Chromium source code on its popular browser and about nine months of public beta testing, Microsoft has launched the new Edge. Currently available for download in a fresh, redesigned avatar with a new logo and everything, the new Microsoft Edge can be installed on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android devices alike. Since Edge is the default browser on Windows 10, it will be updated automatically in the coming weeks. But if you’d like to give it a whirl right away, click here to get started.

Since its first public release in 2015, Edge has used Microsoft’s own EdgeHTML and Chakra engines to render web pages. Now though, Edge is based on Chromium, a free and open-source web browser project developed by Google. And yes, Chromium is also the base for Google’s proprietary Chrome browser. What this means is that Edge is now similar to Chrome in many ways. For example, it supports Chrome-based extensions and will soon allow browsing history to be synced across devices.

For the last one year, Microsoft has been working on the new Chromium-based Edge to make it easily deployable in enterprises and schools. It comes with a few unique features that differentiate it from Chrome. For example, Edge has an Internet Explorer mode, which allows the user to interact with legacy applications and websites that require Internet Explorer to render correctly. Edge also integrates Microsoft Search in its address bar, which makes searching for files on the intranet easier for Microsoft 365 users. Edge will soon get Collections, an inbuilt tool for collecting and sharing web content.

The new Microsoft Edge keeps tracking prevention on by default, while offering as many as three different levels of control. The new Edge also gets a customisation option for the new tab page. Users can choose to start browsing with a page that’s either ‘Focussed’, ‘Inspirational’, or ‘Informational’. They can also customise the page manually. “To get the new Microsoft Edge you have two choices: you can either manually download it today, or if you are a general consumer user, you can wait for it to be automatically released to your device via Windows Update. When you do make the switch, your favorites, passwords, form fill information and basic settings will carry over to the new Microsoft Edge without you having to do anything,” writes JoeB of Microsoft in the company’s blog post.

Twitter wont let you edit your tweets, in 2020 at least

Literally, what you read in the leader above is the news, but since you are here let's elaborate a bit for you. During a video Q&A with Wired, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was asked if users will be able to edit their tweets. His answer was a simple one-word - No. The request for an edit button to edit your tweets has been a long-requested feature and sadly, Twitter hasn't complied. According to The Verge,  Twitter’s product lead Kayvon Beykpour said last summer, “Honestly, it’s a feature that I think we should build at some point, but it’s not anywhere near the top of our priorities.”

With the ability to edit your tweets users won't spend as much time thinking about what they tweet as they do now. Adding the edit button will add a level of slack to users engaging on the platform. Besides, we won't have the treasure trove of Twitter memes we do. The only saving grace is that you can delete your tweet.

Coming back to the Q&A with Wired, Dorsey goes on to explain the decision to leave out the edit button. He says that the decision has its roots in Twitter’s original vision. He says, “We started as an SMS, text message service. And as you all know, when you send a text, you can’t really take it back. We wanted to preserve that vibe, that feeling, in the early days.”

All other social platforms give users the ability to edit their posts, even if some of them have a tag of “edited” once you've fixed your typo or changed certain facts. It's nice to see that once you have sent out a tweet you can't really change it. Your only option is to delete it. How does this affect you? Well, tweet to us and let us know. If you make a mistake, let it be. It's like the SMS you sent that you can't take back.

In other Twitter news, At CES 2020, Suzanne Xie, Twitter director of product management took the stage to talk about some new changes that are coming to the platform this year. She focused specifically on conversations. In a bid to give its users more control over who can reply to a tweet, the social media platform is all set to add a new setting for “conversation participants” right on the compose screen. You can read more about the new features here.

Instagram will soon allow you to send DMs from your browser

Instagram will soon let users chat from their browser. While the launch contradicts Facebook’s plan for end-to-end encryption in all its messaging apps, Instagram has begun testing Direct Messages on the web for a selected number of users around the globe. The news comes almost a year after the testing began. To recall, Instagram introduced DMs in the app in 2013.

"DMs, but make them desktop. We are currently testing Direct messaging on the web, so you can read and reply to your messages from wherever you are," the company said in a statement on Tuesday. There are a number of businesses that communicate with customers via Instagram DM, and this feature can make their life easier.

Instagram will soon enable its website users to see when they receive new DMs, send photos (but not capture them), view their DMs as well as double click to Like and share posts from their feed via Direct. The company will not allow sending videos, but users will be able to view non-disappearing ones. The feature could roll out to everyone soon as Instagram CEO, Adam Mosseri tweeted that he hopes to “bring this to everyone soon” once the kinks are worked out.

However, Facebook’s former Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos said, “This is fascinating, as it cuts directly against the announced goal of E2E encrypted compatibility between FB/IG/WA. Nobody has ever built a trustworthy web-based E2EE messenger, and I was expecting them to drop web support in FB Messenger. Right hand versus left?"

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip could pack a 3300mAh battery and plastic cover over the ultra-thin glass

Samsung is likely to launch its next foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip alongside the Galaxy S20 series on February 11. As we are nearing the launch date, details of the device have been making the rounds on the internet. Earlier this week, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was certified by China's 3C regulatory body. Now, a new report has revealed the alleged battery capacity of Samsung’s next foldable phone.

According to a tweet from XDA-Developers’ Max Weinbach, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip will feature an ultra-thin glass display with a plastic layer on top. The additional plastic layer is said to ensure the display is not scratched easily. Further, he says that the Galaxy Z Flip will pack a 3300mAh battery which is a significant drop from the Galaxy Fold’s 4380mAh battery. But then, the Galaxy Z Flip is likely to be a clamshell device with a smaller display on the body. To compare, Motorola Razr (2019) packs a 2510mAh battery.

The Galaxy Flip Z has a 3300 mAh battery. Along with the Snapdragon 855, this should be pretty ok in everything. About the same battery live as the mid size S10.

— Max Weinbach (@MaxWinebach) January 14, 2020

The Samsung Galaxy Z is tipped to be powered by last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. It is rumoured to sport a 10MP selfie shooter, which is likely to borrow its hardware from the 10MP selfie camera on the Galaxy Note10. The foldable phone is said to turn to ultra-thin glass as the display covering. It is said to reduce, if not eliminate, the crease.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is rumoured to be made available for sale "immediately" after its official unveiling. However, whether or not it will go on sale in markets outside South Korea before the end of February is not yet known.

Samsung could launch the Galaxy Z Flip alongside the Galaxy S20 trio that is expected to come in 6.2/6.4 inches, 6.7 inches, 6.9 inches display sizes.
