Microsoft Windows 7 to get fix for wallpaper issue even after official end of support

In a move that one might consider overly benevolent, Microsoft has promised to send out a fix for an issue caused by its final software update on Windows 7 even though it officially ended support for the operating system on January 14. The company rolled out its final update for Windows 7 on the same day. The issue is expected to affect users who have set ‘Stretch’ as the preferred fit for their desktop wallpaper. Microsoft hasn’t announced a date for the rollout of its fix.

According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft initially promised to fix the wallpaper issue only for customers who had purchased the “Extended Security Update (ESU) for on-premises versions” of Windows 7. But its support page for the software update in question (KB4534310) now reads, “We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release, which will be released to all customers running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.” We’re not sure why Microsoft changed its mind.

According to the support page, installing the faulty update could cause the desktop wallpaper to appear black when the fit is set to ‘Stretch’. It’s a minor problem at most. Microsoft has not only promised to fix it in a future release but has also provided a couple of workarounds for those affected by it: “Set your custom image to an option other than Stretch, such as Fill, Fit, Tile, or Center.” The alternative solution is: “Choose a custom wallpaper that matches the resolution of your desktop.”

To change the desktop wallpaper or the fit on Windows 7, right-click in a blank space on the desktop and select Personalize. In the Control Panel window that opens, select Desktop Background. In the following screen, click on Picture position to pick a fit that’s not the problematic ‘Stretch’. Or click on Browse… to set a different image as your wallpaper. Given that Windows 7 is now deemed deprecated in Microsoft’s books, you might want to consider upgrading to Windows 10. To find out how you can go about doing that, click here.

Poco X2 confirmed to sport 120Hz screen, 64MP main camera

Only yesterday did Xiaomi sub-brand Poco name the successor to its popular Poco F1 smartphone while confirming its launch for February 4 and already it has revealed the Poco X2’s biggest party trick: a 120Hz screen. According to a tweet that the company sent out earlier today, the Poco X2 will sport a ‘RealityFlow’ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. What’s more, the Poco X2’s teaser website suggests that the handset will sport a Sony IMX686 64MP primary camera sensor. We expect to get more details about the Poco X2 as we near its early February launch date.

Poco’s tweet reveals a little more than the inclusion of a 120Hz screen. A closer look at the image in the tweet reveals the presence of a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The fact that the Poco X2 shares its Sony IMX686 64MP main camera sensor with the Redmi K30 adds to the rumour and probability that the Poco X2 is a rebadged Redmi K30 or a at least variant of it. The Redmi K30 was launched in China in early December 2019 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chip. It has up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Poco’s first smartphone, the Poco F1, was launched in August 2018 as a ‘flagship killer’. The Poco F1 employs a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Its screen measures 6.18 inches and has a maximum resolution of 1080 x 2246 pixels. A flat notch on top of the display houses the single 20MP selfie camera with an aperture of f/2.0. Equipped with a 4000mAh battery and 18W fast charging, the Poco F1 entered the market with Android 8.1 Oreo but was recently upgraded to MIUI 11 that’s based on Android 10. You can read more about that here.

The Poco F1 comes with a dual camera setup on its back panel. The primary camera is a 12MP sensor with an aperture of f/1.9, while the second camera is a 5MP depth sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. A dual-LED flash accompanies the two cameras on the back panel. With its successor just around the corner, the Poco F1 is selling on e-commerce websites like Amazon.in at an all-time low price of Rs 14,999. If your immediate phone purchase must include a model with a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, you can consider the Poco F1. Read our review of it here.

New Realme smartphones with Android 10, 4300mAh battery and more spotted on US FCC Certification website

Two new Realme smartphones are in works. The devices carry model numbers RMX2063 and RMX2001. The two smartphones have been spotted on the database of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US. The company is also rumoured to be prepping for the launch of a new flagship with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. However, the two devices are expected to debut as Realme’s next-generation affordable models.

According to the FCC listing, the Realme phone with model number RMX2063 measures 163.9x75.8x9.4mm (WHD) and weighs 196 grams. The phone is listed to run on ColorOS 7, which means it could run Android 10. The phone appears to have a 4300mAh battery. Moreover, the schematics available in the FCC database suggest a power button on the right side and a volume rocker on the left. To recall, a Realme phone with model number RMX2061 had reportedly received a BIS certification in India.

Other than the Realme RMX2063, another smartphone with model number RMX2001 appears to be in development. The listing suggests that it measures 162.1x74.8x9.6mm (WHD) and weighs 191 grams. It also packs a 4300mAh battery and runs ColorOS 7, which is similar to the Realme RMX2063.

The two model numbers suggest that they are two different smartphones and not variants of a single smartphone. For reference, the Realme X had RMX1901 and RMX1951 as the model numbers. Hence, these two smartphones could be upgrades of the Realme X series.

Separately, a Realme smartphone was recently spotted on AnTuTu with model number RMX2071 and Snapdragon 865 chipset. It is said to be showcased by the company at MWC 2020 in Barcelona next month.
